thousande··on Announcing Visual Studio Code – Preview
Is this what I have been looking for? A text editor with some IDE features :) Looking forward to try it out more.

Hope the Plugin system is soon landing, http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/293070-visual-studi...

And PHP IntelliSense would be nice,

Thanks!

thousande··on Firefox 31.0
That is not true. I am sure add-ons can access the same stuff that built-in tools can. Most of the stuff are exposed as JS objects and there are APIs for a lot of stuff. APIs for devtools may be a bit hard to find the documentation sometimes. I guess it is because it is still being developed.

Firebug 3.0 will be built on top of the native developer tools

thousande··on Webkit.js
There are a lot of differences, http://www.paulirish.com/2013/webkit-for-developers/
thousande··on NativeScript – Cross-platform framework for building native mobile applications
Interesting and look promising. Hopefully the announced performance improvements in v0.2 will solve stuttering scrolling in the demo[1] I am experiencing on Nexus4

thousande··on Firefox Developer Tools – Editable box model, Sublime Text keys
Chrome and Firebug has this too.

Same. Credit to the team for great support and follow-ups.

Some starting points for those who wants to contribute:

* Quick start for devtools developers: https://wiki.mozilla.org/DevTools/Hacking * More general info: http://codefirefox.com/

* bugs/tasks flagged as "mentored" is a good way to introduce your self to the code. Devtools mentored tasks:

thousande··on Web Fundamentals: A handbook for best practices
Was a bit surprised by how they managed to display my full name from my Google account in the example videos. Then I remembered ;)

thousande··on Firefox 29
Stuff like this has been available for add-on authors for a while,

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/Code_snippets/In...

Remember, the browser chrome/front-end for Firefox and add-ons is implemented using Web technologies (XUL, JavaScript and CSS) with more or less privileges.

Edit: Fun tip: Choose the Hamburger menu -> DevTools (wrench icon) -> Browser Toolbox and inspect the chrome document like you inspect a web document.

thousande··on Debugging Asynchronous JavaScript with Chrome DevTools
I have been looking for something like this for OS-X. This is excellent.
thousande··on The Birth and Death of JavaScript [video]
Works with Chrome not Firefox. Yay! 2014 ;)
thousande··on JSON5 is a proposed extension to JSON
we should also have JSON comments
thousande··on Only 90s Web Developers Remember This
good times! That moment when you had to --debug-- refactor your 30+ levels of nested tables filled with gifs and font tags ;)
thousande··on Only 90s Web Developers Remember This
They are still there. Even WebKit has an implementation, http://css-tricks.com/custom-scrollbars-in-webkit/ .

The request is still being discussed in Bugzilla :) https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77790

thousande··on Only 90s Web Developers Remember This
and it is of-course not a part of the Web CSS spec.

Discussion is still going strong in Bugzilla, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77790

and then to see one of the browsers go down in flames after all the efforts.

But you gained a lot of arcane knowledge in the end, https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.infosystems.www...

thousande··on Ask HN: Have your parents done anything to make you interested in Science or IT?
yes, my dad invested in technology in the 80's as that was the future and he and mom thought should get used to it. I remember he bought home the Commodore 64 from Germany. Besides of gaming there was always a push to look at how the machine worked etc. Reading the manual and playing with Basic and later machine code. Good times!
thousande··on Firefox 27 Released
It was mentioned in yesterdays release notes (draft). The note seems to have been removed now. Anyway, it said something that the tool did not made it for this release.

Edit: As Jare mentioned (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7178225), the editor is disabled by default. Check Toolbox options.

thousande··on A Reintroduction to JavaScript
There has been added a lot of new features to the browser, but the core language (EcmaScript) has not evolved much for a while.

* Overview: https://rawgithub.com/whatwg/html-differences/master/Overvie...

The next thing is JavaScript "next" or Ecma Script 6

* http://wiki.ecmascript.org/doku.php?id=harmony:proposals

You can use Traceur if you want to try out ES6 features today More info: https://github.com/google/traceur-compiler

These days there is a lot of things going on in the tooling section

Build: * Grunt: http://gruntjs.com/ - a lot of grunt- tasks at http://npmjs.org/ * Newest kid in town: https://github.com/gulpjs/gulp

Modulization and dependency management: * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CommonJS * http://browserify.org/

thousande··on You might not need jQuery
> Do not reinvent the wheel to solve problems that can't be solved in much cleaner and nicer ways. Managing dependencies can be annoying, but we all bite the bullet for a very good reason, because reusing solid well tested code is a good thing.

This.

A thing that the examples on that site did not address is the power of jQuery("element.selector") selects a "bucket"/array of elements and functions are executed on each element in that bucket.

So now you may have to add that functionality into your library. Then there is always a non-logical browser inconsistency that needs to be taken care of. Then you need to write tests. Time used for managing the library piles up very fast.

thousande··on HN Search Updated
nice ui and fast, but the search results could improve

Test: Search for a "story" about "Firefox" "today"

Edit: If you want to inspect the source, download the file and rename the extension to zip.

Edit2: You may have to download the file and drag it into Firefox in order to install.

thousande··on Why I create for the web
As a so called hacker that has grown up with the Web I awe at how software vendors released their software in the past. I mean when you got stuck with xyzy there was no quick Google search that gave you 10 different fixes or workarounds. When the CD-ROM/disc/s was shipped it was shipped. It must have taken ages before the user got the bug fix
thousande··on IntelliJ IDEA 13 is Released
I think IntelliJ IDEA has all the features of the other IDE products. Stuff are just added/removed by default and adjusted towards Java development
thousande··on Chrome DevTools for Mobile: Screencast and Emulation
More details about this here: http://www.paulirish.com/2013/webkit-for-developers/
thousande··on I tried switching to Firefox...
The keyboard CMD+LEFT combo in WYSIWYG editors is a bug in the editor and the developers should be notified

I do not see any difference between google chrome and firefox when it comes to toolbars in fullscreen mode. The bars can be hidden from from View -> Toolbars / right click in the toolbar and choose which bars that should be visible

thousande··on Ask HN: Is Java still worth learning?
Mozilla's HTML5 parser is written in Java. One of the reasons java was chosen was the unicode support [1] The Java code is converted to C++ in build time I think [2]
