thornofmight··on A $2 photo from a California junk shop is the ‘holy grail of Western Americana’
Yeah that's the one thing I was hoping the article would explain.
thornofmight··on Reddit Is Working on a New Front Page Algorithm
It's also a Vice article.
thornofmight··on Daniel Thompson, Whose Bagel Machine Altered the American Diet, Dies at 94
I can see your blue eye peering through a bagel's hole into the heart of modern times.
thornofmight··on Is alcohol actually bad for you?
Yeah, the hangovers move way down deeper, like into your soul.
thornofmight··on Hiroyuki Nishimura, founder of 2channel, has taken ownership of 4chan
> one of the last true bad lands of the internet

Absolutely true, and a great way of putting it.

thornofmight··on Cognitive mechanisms in meditation practice
Thank you for sharing.

I was reading through your posts and saw this: "The second is this: when Shakti pierces the 4th chakra and/or the hrit padma (below it) ... you'll gain a kind of "compass". From there on out, you'll always have a way of checking which path to go. It might mean staying with kundalini yoga, it might not be. The journey getting to the center involves piercing through the 2nd ganthri, learning to surrender. It will be like peeling an onion. You'll cry. A lot. And you'll know it is worth it."

This is related to kundalini yoga? Any recommendations on how to get started there?

Thanks!
thornofmight··on Cognitive mechanisms in meditation practice
How often were you meditating and how long on average was each session?
thornofmight··on The lost tunnels of Liverpool
This sounds fascinating. If you or anybody else can find the article please post it!
thornofmight··on Steinway's 600,000th piano, the Fibonacci
The following sentence explains it. "The way in which [the fibonacci spiral] continues to grow but stay true to its form is very much like Steinway & Sons over these many years."
thornofmight··on Show HN: Ear training using midi.js
In the example he listed each note goes either up or down one note to the next chord.
thornofmight··on Ross Ulbricht Sentenced to Life in Prison
The person Ross hired as a hitman was an undercover agent who had been befriending Ross online for over a year.
thornofmight··on Ask HN: How do I get my first contracting client?
Hang out on the freenode freelancing channels.

I work in Magento. I hung out in #magento, and #magento-jobs, and a few other more general PHP/HTML freelance channels (#startups can help you find channel names for freelancing). I answered questions in #magento for a month or so, got a little bit of rep, then started responding to requests for work. Eventually I got work. Some of it turned into reoccurring work.

thornofmight··on Take me as an Intern – 19yo student seeking internship
Why do you want to intern? Seems like with your skills you could just work (and get paid for) a real job.
thornofmight··on Show HN: Opinionated Dress Color Simulation
Nice job getting this together so fast.

I wonder if the reason this dress color thing has been spreading around so fast is because of the different devices everyone is using to view it. When I first saw the dress on my Macbook Pro screen (non-retina) the dress looked white and gold. Then I checked on my iPhone 6 in the dark later on and it looked blue and black.

I've been seeing articles about how the reason people are seeing different colors is because of different types of eyes, psychology, etc...maybe the answer is much simpler.

thornofmight··on The drug revolution that no one can stop
Are there any opiate based research chemicals? It seems like I mostly see psychedelics, or an occasional amphetamine or benzo-like chemical.
thornofmight··on Friends Don't Let Friends Clap on One and Three: A Backbeat Clapping Study
"We can determine the “metric salience” of each event in a rhythmic pattern by“recursively breaking down a musical pattern (with an initially specified length)into subpatterns of equal length.” The more subdivisions it takes to reach a given event, the lower its metrical salience. In 4/4 time, the downbeat is themost salient position, followed by beat three. It would seem natural to clap onthe strongest, most salient beat."

Anybody know what this quote is trying to say? What is a "given event"?

thornofmight··on Finding a Video Poker Bug Made These Guys Rich
Does anyone know how they justify this type of violent entrance for a non-violent offender?
thornofmight··on Reading the Silk Road configuration
I know for a fact that there was a source disclosure MySQL injection bug on many of the pages in SR.

There was also other MySQL Injection bugs. You could even look through the SR forum archive and find people talking about how the search field at one point was exploitable by the standard "' or 'a'='a" and was disclosing customer's names and addresses.

thornofmight··on The NSA and Me
Do you have examples of backdoored encryption from ancient times? I'm curious what you mean.
thornofmight··on Show HN: The Rap Test
Very nice! It'd be cool if this could be turned into a type of flashcard, quiz site where users could upload some sort of config file with questions, answers, images, video and then test their knowledge of the subject.
thornofmight··on The Rise of the $8 Ice Cube
That's funny because reading this article I thought of that exact same scene. The way that sphere of ice falls into the glass is so satisfying.
thornofmight··on Show HN: Hipster Domain Finder
He just means trendy.
thornofmight··on Egyptians may have moved massive pyramid stones on wet sand
The article mentions that the sand doesn't require a lot of water. Check out the picture with the guy standing on the sleigh pouring water: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp-content/up...

They could probably load up an empty sleigh with water and then drag it to the rocks.

thornofmight··on Silk Road 2.0 Launches
It used CodeIgniter (PHP).

thornofmight··on I am under surveillance by Canadian agents, my computer has been backdoored
What group are you part of?
thornofmight··on I am under surveillance by Canadian agents, my computer has been backdoored
Probably because the name for the groups is something like "Illuminati." It's possible he could just be talking about A and B being capitalists and communists though.
