thornofmight··on Hacking on Side Projects: The Pool Ball Tracker
This is awesome!
thornofmight··on PayPal to lay off 325 employees and 120 contractors
Has that made it any less usable?
thornofmight··on Web Design Trends
"According to Bob, short copy performs better when there is low perceived risk, low cost, and low commitment. Also, when the customer has an emotional, impulsive, and “want-oriented” motivation. In other words, if you’re looking to write high-impact copy for concert tickets, designer shoes, or mp3 players…keep it short. Bob states that long copy is the better performer when there is a rational, analytical, need-oriented motivation. Think consumer insurance products or many complex B2B offerings."

thornofmight··on Amazon.com criticising new iPad on homepage
This apparently worked. I've only heard about the new iMac from apple.com and until reading this post I had no idea that it wasn't as thin as it appeared. I was so amazed when I saw it.
thornofmight··on [Show HN] Engem.me - Give your LinkedIn profile a visual facelift
Very cool. Reminds me a little of http://flavors.me/
thornofmight··on iPhone Uber-Hacker Comex Is Out At Apple
Breaking news: 20 year-old is irresponsible. Loses job. More at 11.
thornofmight··on Show HN: A simple lightweight CSS grid, not a bloated framework
Thanks! This looks great.
thornofmight··on Show HN: A simple lightweight CSS grid, not a bloated framework
The grid adds a base layout which you would then customize by adding classes and ids on top of the default grid classes. You can definitely adjust positions with pixel accuracy. The grid is useful because it helps with responsive web design: everything resizes and repositions when you change your browser size or use a mobile device to view the webpage.
thornofmight··on Entire cities dead on some World of Warcraft realms
It's probably against HN etiquette to say things like this, but I really love this post.
thornofmight··on Steve Jobs passed away one year ago - HN Frontpage
"I think Jobs himself proved that software isn't art"

How so?

Also, I don't think it's too crazy to say that the toothbrush has had a larger effect on mankind than The Godfather.

thornofmight··on Steve Jobs passed away one year ago - HN Frontpage
Also, humans have spent a lot more time on computers and iPhones than they have listening to the Beatles.
thornofmight··on Steve Jobs passed away one year ago - HN Frontpage
I think you're unfamiliar with the extent to which he's affected the way we interact with the devices we use every single day.
thornofmight··on You are getting sleeeeeeepy ...
I'm surprised nobody picked up on the seemingly obvious metaphor these metronomes are for people and behavior.
thornofmight··on The Flat Design Era
Very interesting. I'm pulling a lot of interface design inspiration from Layervault right now and saving it in the back of my head for later.
thornofmight··on New Apple maps app under fire from users
A car charger usb port has been a one of the more useful things I've gotten for my car in the past few years.
thornofmight··on Amazon’s colorful new towers will put a bold stamp on Seattle’s skyline
Apple's new campus is designed specifically to increase collaboration and random encounters.
thornofmight··on Moo acquire flavors.me
Could have something to do with their competitors (like Minted) becoming more focused on the community aspect of online stationery.
thornofmight··on IPhone 5: Customers in the Big Apple camp out 8 days early
Don't these people have jobs?
thornofmight··on Why I switched to Spine.js
For #4, "Let’s say you fetched a record in one view of the app. Then you fetch and update that same record in a different view. In Spine.js, both records will update." This sounds like completely standard Backbone.js functionality to me. It just seems like the guy writing this post wasn't familiar enough with the framework to even begin making "why I switched" posts.
thornofmight··on FBI launches $1 billion face recognition project
Any sci-fi book recommendations where I can read about this sort of thing?
thornofmight··on FBI launches $1 billion face recognition project
It's relevant.
thornofmight··on TSA Moves On From Your Underwear to Your Starbucks
"HN completely bans his name being mentioned in topic titles apparently."

Is this actually true?

thornofmight··on How we keep GitHub fast
I just got finished reading his biography and I am nearly 100% sure he meant this literally.
thornofmight··on Linus Torvalds responds to what killed the Linux desktop
At first I thought this would just be an easy CSS fix, and it almost is -- but the reason this problem exists is because they put that huge sidebar at the top of the page with the guy's face and four or five links under it.

Seeing as long posts and discussions are starting to become pretty common on G+ I hope that the G+ team invests some time into figuring out how to make everything more readable.

thornofmight··on What killed the Linux desktop
"Perhaps I'm set in my ways" -- I think this pretty much says it all.
thornofmight··on Ghosts in the rom
Reading Steve Job's biography right now, and it was really surprising to me how little (almost insignificant) of a role Woz played at Apple after the first couple years there.
thornofmight··on Why Ratings Systems Don't Work
In the context of a website like Netflix, where your recommendations and ratings for movies are based off of your history of ratings, aren't you the one rating the raters?

However, the type of rating mentioned in the OP and the type of rating on Netflix only seem to work in specific niches. I can't imagine how a website like Amazon would implement anything even close to what Goodfilms is doing.

thornofmight··on Fixing Hacker News: A mathematical approach
It's so upsetting being a 21yo just getting started in the industry. I finally find this awesome site with like-minded, motivated, and successful people, but all anybody can talk about is fixing it!

It seems like I'm always on the tail-end of communities. Is this just simply a case of the grass is greener for you veterans of HN?

thornofmight··on US Carbon Emissions Hit 20-Year Low
If there's one thing I've learned from my years of internet use, it's never use the word "irony."
thornofmight··on Filepicker.io partners with Aviary
Totally! Aviary is an awesome service. I was just asking for UI examples of good-looking image editors/uploaders.
