thoraway1010··on Welcome to C# 9.0
What is the winforms simple (ie, drag and drop form designer, click through for code) current windows development recommendation. I've seriously lost all track of how to just get up and going. I've tried UWP/WPF etc - they felt like a bit of nightmare for quick and go, but the tooling now seems to have dropped winforms? I couldn't get the form designer to actually show up even on a WinForms project?
thoraway1010··on Welcome to C# 9.0
yeah for composition - I ALWAYS liked it much better!
thoraway1010··on An army of volunteer ‘elves’ fights disinfo in the Czech Republic
The flip flopping from folks who keep on saying "believe the science" is ridiculous.

How can science be trusted if it has these huge flop flops within a week with really no change in underlying research?

thoraway1010··on An army of volunteer ‘elves’ fights disinfo in the Czech Republic
The science of mask use and potential benefits has not shifted. That's the issue. Masks work. We had people wearing masks telling us they didn't work. We had the santa clara health official LICK HER FINGERS to turn her page on live TV while telling us masks don't work to help reduce hand to mouth contact.

Do folks in public health / epidimiology not understand how this total BS messaging (masks don't work) - really undermines their messaging.

Online on facebook was even worse, lots of epidemiologists with clearly no view of actual "mechanisms" this virus might move by making up just ridiculous negatives to mask wearing.

Masks and face covering are CHEAP compared to other interventions such as lockdown.

And no, there really aren't good studies showing masks increase transmission.

thoraway1010··on The mystery of 'hacked' Houseparty users may have been solved
I've complained about this in the past (and was attacked for it). I'll do it again.

If you create a subdomains under your trusted domain, and point those domains to IP address controlled by scammers - you bear some responsibility for the resulting mess.

The Epic claims are pure PR spin. Epic claimed

"these rumors amounted to a paid commercial smear to harm Houseparty, announcing on their Twitter account, that a million-dollar bounty was being offered to “the first individual to provide proof of such a campaign.”"

An individual offered clear proof that Epic was pointing houseparty domains to scammers who were using that to steal folks info, the exact situation users were complaining about. These are domains UNDER EPICS TOTAL CONTROL being pointed to scammers.

They now claim they still found no evidence of a campaign against houseparty users by a hacker group - and this was all a "paid smear campaign".

Who believes these PR people -seriously?

If Amazon takes payments.amazon.com and point it to Scammer IP XXX, how does that NOT create a vulnerability?

thoraway1010··on AWS CloudFormation now supports blue/green deployments for Amazon ECS
Happy ECS on EC2 and ECS on fargate customer. I'd be really surprised if they turn these off - they just work in a very simple way to get stuff running. I have some "scheduled tasks" in containers, they run on fargate - works great and so easy to update.
thoraway1010··on An army of volunteer ‘elves’ fights disinfo in the Czech Republic
Yep - when I questioned my local health authorities guidance that if "healthy" I should take off my mask on crowded public transit and when working with the very elderly (adult day health) I was told to avoid "disinformation" (in writing) and to follow surgeon general and their guidance and take off my mask on public transit and while working with the elderly.

A month later they flip-flopped on that ironically. I wonder if they started to believe some of the "disinformation" that wearing masks is a low cost though imperfect way to reduce spread.

I've found actual scientists working with these diseases are pretty on it for logic, but folks like epidemiologists are sometimes totally horrendous. Is epidemiology less rigorous then other infectious disease educational tracks?

thoraway1010··on Uber cuts 3000 more jobs, closes 45 offices
That's not your call to make.

Literally folks with cars are telling folks without cars (but who use uber when needed) that uber is not necessary (ie, partial access to a car is not needed) while they have 24/7 access.

Anyone who has NOT owned a car will tell you - uber is essential - full stop.

30% of the population has HOUSEHOLD income from all sources of $30K or less. The cost of parking alone can be a major issue (many cheaper apts do not have dedicated parking).

thoraway1010··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
That's a MUCH clearer story! Folks maybe just publish their memos vs these I guess hashed news stories.

The Reuters article focused on the layoffs, lack of confirmation on number of layoffs, and PR quote etc - I wish I'd seen this article earlier.

thoraway1010··on Uber cuts 3000 more jobs, closes 45 offices
Ahh - the comment from the person with the multi-car garage, the tesla and the range rover.

Walk me through what folks without good car / transit access should be using? If cab companies are "essential" then uber is essential and preferred to cab companies in many markets.

A lot of folks on HN seems to be approaching this whole situation from the I have a ton of money, can work from home, have a car mental model.

thoraway1010··on AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Review: Why Is This Amazon's Best Selling CPU?
IntelliJ stuff is usually slow (I like smaller form factor machines). Finally with the 3600 performance is at least reasonable and not annoying.

It took forever to get bundled, but you can get Lenovo and I think HP prebuilt machines for this as well - for work I don't like handbuilding a machine.

thoraway1010··on Justice Department, states likely to bring antitrust lawsuits against Google
This is such a ridiculous statement.

Cable companies have taken billion in federal subsidies, lied about universal deployment and speeds, and unless there is local competition have taken customers to the cleaners, forced the purchase of bundled channel packages, charged rentals for modems they were not renting (I should know - I called in every month to have charge removed) etc.

I can think of a long list of other large / monopoly type companies that regular abuse consumers at far higher levels than google does.

Consumer spend on google is actually pretty small.

thoraway1010··on France passes law forcing online platforms to delete hate-speech within 24 hours
We had a recent example along these lines with certain sports and records where there were some hate speech references to a potential biological basis for differences (men vs women and masters age vs non masters).
thoraway1010··on Which way a wind turbine turns might not seem to matter, but it does
Beat me to this.

Water also drains clockwise and foucault pendulums process clockwise in northern hemisphere. These are somewhat less likely to have a bearing on the matter than a sundial.

thoraway1010··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
It can be funny though to take them seriously.

When I was less responsible (younger) I would do that sometimes.

Someone does a BS bunch of lines, stand up and thank them from the staff for committing to the additional resources for staff.

Follow-up with third parties unironically echoing the message with outcomes the business does not want (ie, please send in your proposals as we are doubling down on our engineering).

I make too much money to do anything like this (and have more control anyways) plus if you are more senior you are expected to understand the game.

thoraway1010··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
My impression was cruise was sort of the established players efforts to throw GOBS of money at a space they were worried about. Ie, a place that measures progress in part based on just expense.

Ie, waymo's tech is interesting but we have cruise so we are OK. Or tesla's tech looks interesting, but we have cruise.

I'd love to know what the kit they use for self driving costs. It looks monumentally expensive when you see one of their cars driving around.

I'm interested in MobileEye's next version of tech - wish they'd be pushing harder or did the Intel borg swallow them? They seemed to have a practical and pretty reasonably priced approach.

thoraway1010··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
yep - the idea that they are doubling down on their engineering talent (2x headcount or 2x salaries or 2x resources) or whatever big bet they claim to be making seems like it might be a lie.

The PR guy (Milin Mehta) used to work at Kraken Digital Asset Exchange. They are known for suing to identify ten reviewers on Glassdoor, claiming they are former employees in breach of their severance contract.

Why work at companies like this?

thoraway1010··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
Somewhat true.

My favorite: "We adhere to the highest ethical principles" - as they give you a 500 page ethics doc that no one reads or follows.

But I've actually found it's a good / reliable tell. You just stay away from companies like this that can't talk straight and you end up a LOT happier. I don't mean they need to be nice - but just clear relatively honest normal English language communication.

ie, "we're cutting back to reduce our burn rate." vs "we are doubling down on engineering talent." Some PR people actually get it I think and can basically be honest while adding some things you may not have thought of. Not in this case though!

thoraway1010··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
doubling down is not about increasing focus. It is about increasing risk by making a BIGGER (not smaller) bet on something.

This is in the original meaning in gambling (you are convinced you are right and so double your bet) and elsewhere.

Only in PR land is a cash flow pullback and risk reduction step such as a headcount reduction called a doubling down. It goes to show how pernicious these types of intentional miswordings are.

thoraway1010··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
"doubling down on our engineering work and engineering talent,” Cruise spokesperson Milin Mehta told Reuters.

Do these folks even try to hide their lies?

Doubling down = 2x the engineering staff. This is as they lay off in their lidar team.

Can companies be sued for these types of basically false claims or are we just stuck commenting on what lies they seem come up with. Can you imagine if your day to day life involved interacting with folks this dishonest?

thoraway1010··on Tesla's batteries aim to rework the math for electric cars and the grid
Prices go negative because it's basically a grid control service at that point. You have a load you need to have taken, and are willing to pay someone to help you manage the grid.
thoraway1010··on Tesla's batteries aim to rework the math for electric cars and the grid
Fantastic. The thing is a 100kwh in a car battery is a fantastic amount of power - our condo ranges from 50kwh to 125kwh usage per month.

I would love if my smart charger could be wired with a transfer for switch or similar to send 40Amps back into the house. This would make a major difference in the decision to buy an EV.

thoraway1010··on Woman stalked by sandwich server via her Covid-19 contact tracing info
Why not just use the double blind google / apple tech for this? The govt requiring this level of data seems unnecessary.
thoraway1010··on Woman stalked by sandwich server via her Covid-19 contact tracing info
Temp agencies are actually the WORST. If you do hiring and they get your cell phone number you are hosed.
thoraway1010··on Stop tracking me: Austrian citizen files complaint over Android Advertising ID
Plausible deniability? They put it there so you can be tracked - that is what it is for.

Have you confirmed that the click through agreements and privacy policies don't mention anything like this?

thoraway1010··on The Wetware Crisis: the Dead Sea effect (2008)
There are plenty of level 9-10's at amazon who didn't move every 2 years. Pay is around $600 - $900K? Someone can correct.

I'm not sure if this is enough for the job hoppers but retention is not terrible (despite the Amazon stories that no one lasts longer than a week and cries at their desk every day).

thoraway1010··on The Wetware Crisis: the Dead Sea effect (2008)
In jurassic age companies you can get up to speed quicker, there is less to wrap your head around and the onsite staff tend to use a simpler approach (manual methods etc).

If you think you are "up to speed" on a large company a week or so you are usually so incompetent you don't know what you don't know.

thoraway1010··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
What a pathetic govt then. I've taken almost every precaution (I was way ahead and have masks, hand sanitizer, touchless soap, open doors with disposable tissue and more) but you cannot keep small children under 3 cooped up all day - it's disgusting.

Seriously - I have always been a law and order person - but seeing acres and acres wide open space, that is totally uncrowded at all times (even weekends before covid) now off limits because of some bogus risk evaluation is ridiculous.

And no - I do not go grocery shopping AT ALL in two months. I ordered online very early, leave the food outside for 3 days after delivery, wash packages etc.

The govt has absolutely lost its mind with this horrendous logic. The reality - we have to believe there is some basis in the closure of things (clearly clubs / bars / social gatherings make sense) or people are going to stop putting up with 100% stupidity.

Shutting down huge outdoor spaces within walking distances of folks houses is the dumbest thing I've heard. Now we are all crowded on sidewalks.

And no - I cannot go and get tested even if I'm willing to pay because I can't certify I have the severity level of systems needed and a doctors order, and oh, the FDA and CDC blocked everyone from doing tests for a long time.

Let me give govt some suggestions.

Allow people to pay, out of pocket, with no doctors order for testing if they want to. Do free testing for folks who have a doctors order and meet your severe symptoms criteria.

Where is the contact tracing?

Focus the lockdown on high risk activities - not shutting down beaches. You are seriously going to lose the trust of folks with this stupidity.

thoraway1010··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
Beaches are not closed where I am, and there is almost no risk at the beach. I'm much more worried about the 80 people in my complex and the shared laundry, elevators, stairs, door handles etc.

Does logic / science no longer apply in public health?

thoraway1010··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
The focus is not on how we can make this safe, it is how can we control and lock this down.

Different approaches, maybe similar outcomes, but one involves much less economic activity.
