What a headline
thomyorkie··on When the business model is the privacy violation
It is short-sited to say advertising eats into the profit of the company. When done successfully, it allows for more goods to be sold which increases profits and in turn allows for more research and development and thus better products.
thomyorkie··on When the business model is the privacy violation
Advertising doesn't necessarily make a product more expensive except where something like cost plus pricing is used.
thomyorkie··on Show HN: Mindset – Self-Improvement Hypnosis
iOS 11.2.6. Its up to date. I can download it if I search for the app from the app store.
thomyorkie··on Show HN: Mindset – Self-Improvement Hypnosis
Downloading the app doesn’t seem to work on my iPhone 7. Just keeps saying it’s connecting to Apple Music.
thomyorkie··on Larry Page’s Flying Taxis, Now Exiting Stealth Mode
Wonder how this compares in size to Dubai's flying taxis. This one seems like it takes up more space.

Based on what?
thomyorkie··on Facebook User Growth, Time Spent Fall on News Feed Changes
I used to feel this way until I started telling FB to hide or stop certain notifications. Now, most all my notifications are useful.
thomyorkie··on Goldman Sachs Is Setting Up a Cryptocurrency Trading Desk

thomyorkie··on Startups should not use React
> If all giants agreed to open source under the “BSD + patents” scheme, cross-adoption would grind to a halt. Why? If Google released Project X under “BSD + Patents”, and Amazon really liked it, rather than adopting it and losing their right to ever sue Google for patents, they would go off and build it on their own.

This seems like a reasonable argument, but it doesn't seem to have deterred several big name companies from using React. Airbnb, netflix, and dropbox for example.

thomyorkie··on 110 N.F.L. Brains
As someone who played 3 years of football in middle school and 3 years in high school and sustained 2 concussions along with tons of sub-concussive hits, I just hope that by there will be a cure for CTE sometime in the next few decades. Crossing my fingers for Johnson's Kernel or Musk's neural lace to succeed.

thomyorkie··on Cafeteria workers at Facebook struggle to make ends meet
This doesn't address parent's comment at all. You act as if there's no difference between calling people out for irresponsible behavior and Orwellian policies to control that behavior.
thomyorkie··on Google to add 'news feed' to website and app
The difference is personalization. I never would visit a portal site like yahoo, but every morning I look through my Google Now feed. Relevance matters.
thomyorkie··on Why the average millionaire's college GPA is 2.9 [video]
Probably appeals to people with different learning styles than you. Doesn't take much effort for you to stop the video from playing.
thomyorkie··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
> Just hanged out.

Just FYI, this isn't typical usage. People say hung instead of hanged in this instance.

thomyorkie··on Warren Buffett says he dumped a third of his IBM stock
I played around with Watson's visual recognition api and thought it was decent. Care to elaborate?
thomyorkie··on Warren Buffett says he dumped a third of his IBM stock
I'd say AI as a service or cognitive computing.
thomyorkie··on Radboud University connects first click-on arm prosthesis to nerves
> Through an opening in the skin, the patient “clicks” the prosthesis onto a metal rod in the bone.

So he has a flap of skin that just spreads apart and reveals this metal rod? How does he avoid infections?

thomyorkie··on I ate 40 teaspoons of sugar a day. This is what happened (2015)
Its not coming from nothing. If a higher percentage of the total calories he consumes turns to fat instead of being used as energy, then he will have extra mass on his body.
thomyorkie··on I ate 40 teaspoons of sugar a day. This is what happened (2015)
You're talking about that 13k calories of sugar as if it exists in a vacuum. That extra sugar could have caused more of the other non-sugar food he was consuming to turn to fat.
thomyorkie··on I ate 40 teaspoons of sugar a day. This is what happened (2015)
Its 160 grams of sugar which equals 619 calories which leads to 12999 calories in 21 days. Still less than 4 pounds though.

However, you're really oversimplifying weight gain. Hormones play an important role in how much fat is stored and how much your metabolism burns. And the type of food you eat can affect your hormones.

thomyorkie··on I ate 40 teaspoons of sugar a day. This is what happened (2015)
He ate 40 teaspoons which is 160 grams of sugar. Also, perhaps the fact that he went from very little sugar to 160 grams a day caused rapid weight gain. I know for instance that your body changes over time to burn fat more efficiently if you are on a lower carb diet, perhaps the reverse is true as well.

thomyorkie··on How an obscure cult grew to become the dominant religion of the Western world
Do philosophy students worship the philosophers they study? If you succeed in teaching them to be freethinkers they will reject the religious worship of anyone.
thomyorkie··on How an obscure cult grew to become the dominant religion of the Western world
We can free our children from the shackles of religion or other forms of tribalism by teaching them to be free thinkers from an early age. Teach them to think philosophically, educate them in the writings of Spinoza and Thomas Paine, etc. Make that their Sunday school and you'd end up with a remarkable generation.
thomyorkie··on Russians Engineer a Slot Machine Cheat that Casinos Can't Fix
> A finger that lingers too long above a spin button may be a guard’s only clue that hackers in St. Petersburg are about to make another score.

Seems like this is easy for the scammers to work around. They could calculate the average time it takes for the scammer to lift his hand from his lap and press the button, and then use that time instead of .25 seconds. Would be less successful, but would seem to be almost impossible to detect.

thomyorkie··on Fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of overall cancer in Japanese
Perhaps pesticide consumption offsets fruit and vegetable benefits.
thomyorkie··on Facebook is terrifying
> Even if you’re extremely cautious, even if you never post anything on Facebook, even if you have “location services” disabled on your phone at all times etc. etc. Facebook still knows where you are. You can’t stop other people from taking selfies in an airport.

This seems a bit over the top. What are the odds I'll end up in the background of someone's selfie that they post on Facebook? I imagine the chances are incredibly small. And if I choose to take a picture with someone, I just have to be aware that it may end up on social media and be OK with the baggage that comes with that.
