thomquaid··on Engineer eats efficiently for $2.50 a day (2016)
Did the engineer end up malnourished? If not...
thomquaid··on What do scientists tell us about boxing's gender row?
That is not true. What we are seeing is people using an identity to gain unsportspersonlike advantages in sport competition.
thomquaid··on AI and the Problem of Knowledge Collapse
> Every google search now returns loads of AI generated website

That is a google problem, not an AI problem.

thomquaid··on Stable Diffusion 3
Could you elaborate on the concrete real world harm?
thomquaid··on Dean of Engineering at University of Nevada wrote a paper that’s bad
Of course.
thomquaid··on Get a cable modem, go to jail (1999)
There is no safety to check on a glock.
thomquaid··on Switzerland Weighs Full or Partial Credit Suisse Nationalization
Youre not accounting for inflation. The value of a dollar today is much more than the value of a dollar years later. Especially when inflation is 6%. The bailed out banks received $426B year 2008 dollars and the TARP dollars recovered are $442B 2014 dollars.

In real terms, the Treasury should have recovered $467B 2014 dollars for its investment to have a 0% real rate of return. In fact, $25B real 2008 dollars were given to banks and never recovered.

thomquaid··on Mcmaster.com is the best e-commerce site I've ever used
China is a country not a race.
thomquaid··on 5th Circuit Rules Internet Companies Have No Right to Moderate
Government creates laws which permit or forbid corporations from doing things all the time. In this case, laws allowing corporations to restrict free speech are balanced against laws which forbid such restriction on private citizens, and the constitutional law which says 'government cannot restrict free speech' is interpreted to mean also government cannot permit corporations to restrict free speech. Not a hard concept, for a modern law scholar, or a constitutional law scholar. The idea that speech can be restricted by a private entity in the US is the stretch that originalists would have a problem with (e.g. you can yell fire in a crowded theater and policies to the contrary are prior restraint and unlawful by corporations or by governments).
thomquaid··on Internet outage affected nearly 30k people after Oakland fiber cable was shot
Plants are living things.
thomquaid··on LibreWolf – A fork of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom
Libre comes from Latin, via Norman and New Orleans French, to American English. It seems to me quite well chosen, as tech lingua franca.
thomquaid··on Earth’s inner core is growing unevenly. Why isn’t the planet tipping?
lava lamp
thomquaid··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
Consider there is a major difference in purpose between a State and private educational institution. Prestige is hardly relevant in my view--the purpose is to efficiently allocate state taxpayer resources for the public good of state citizens at UT, as it should be for UC. Harvard and prestige are two tangential things.
thomquaid··on SARS-CoV-2 Gamma variant infected 16 fully Pfizer vaccinated Guiana gold miners
Israel's Minister of Health came out yesterday and said theyre seeing only 39% effectiveness now (delta). Based on prior reporting, Israel's vaccination program seemed to be the best in the world.

thomquaid··on ATT services down due to bombing in Nashville
You are missing a key component of terrorism which is that the political violence is illegal/not lawful.

Political violence which is in line with societal norms is not terrorism. The value judgement isn't implied, it's the main the feature of the word.

thomquaid··on Contemplating the End of Physics
In some respects it seems like you're arguing P=NP. It may not be the case however. It's certainly a possibility that the system cannot be perfectly determined from within the system.
thomquaid··on I built an app to fix my depression
You're being obtuse, not him. /A cause/ of depressive symptoms is not the same as /the cause/ of (your) depressive symptoms.
thomquaid··on Porsche found a way to 3D-print lightweight pistons that add more horsepower
You are very wrong here. Ethanol as an ICE fuel could be done carbon neutral very quickly thru yeast, and battery technology will probably never reach comparable energy densities in weight limited applications (mobile applications). We may engineer a society where the limitations of batteries are not limiting (because we/goods never travel far), but only a fool thinks you need electricity as an energy source for carbon neutral ICE.
thomquaid··on ‘BlueLeaks’ Exposes Files from Hundreds of Police Departments
I am sorry to say this but white supremecy does not have the potential to kill millions. It's like saying gang violence has the potential to kill millions.
thomquaid··on Ultraviolet Irradiation of Blood: “The Cure That Time Forgot”? (2018)
If you watched the whole clip, you would know 'disinfect' (verb) was used and not 'disinfectant' (noun) with respect to internal use. Very poorly articulated and easily capable of causing confusion, but broad media disingenuity is not helping anyone here.
thomquaid··on Coronavirus clue? Most cases aboard U.S. aircraft carrier are symptom-free
More people are found dead at home because during a lockdown-at-home you're simply more likely to be at home at any given point in time overall, obviously.
