thisisit··on I've been waiting over a month for Anthropic to respond to my billing issue
My last experience with Claude support has been rough.

I used a Visa card to buy monthly Pro subscription. One day I ran out of credits so I go to buy extra credit. But my card got declined. I recheck my card limit and try again. Still declined.

I try extending the Pro subscription. It works. Turns out my card had a "Secure by Visa" feature. To complete transaction I needed to submit OTP on a Visa page. This page appears when I pay for Pro but not while buying extra credits.

I open a ticket and mention all the details to Claude support. Even these details they come back with "We have no way of knowing why your card was declined. You need to check with your bank".

Later I get hold of a Mastercard with similar protection. OTP triggers on both subscription and extra usage page.

I share the finding and response is still - "We checked with our engineering team and we have no way of knowing why the other Visa card was declined. You have to check with your bank".

I gave up trying to buy extra usage.

My experience with Replicate has also similarly absurd. For testing I loaded $10 to my balance. But I keep getting rate limited with error that my balance should be above $5. Responses have been absurd. AI bot responded that my balance had to be above $10. On asking why the message said $5 the "human" support responded that it might be a "temporary hiccup". Later they came back that my balance had to be above $20 for full rate limits. I asked again - why was their rate limit error message not clear enough? No response for past 10 days.

Its like all these AI companies want to replace developers but their own systems is built using super glue.

thisisit··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
That's why I said either inept or too smart for their own good because closing of the strait was a real threat before the war and was ignored, leading to the tweet on Easter.
thisisit··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
I'd say more like a loss for the US than a win for Iran.

> 4. Showed everyone in the ME and the world that if anyone messes with them they’ll close the straight. Then gas prices go up. Then your own domestic pop gets pissed. Then your chances of re-election drop.

Everyone knew from the beginning that closing the strait was something Iran would do. But it is current US government that is either inept or too smart for their own good and thought with US producing surplus oil for domestic use, it will not impact them. They didn't care for the consequences and it came back to bite them.

Also, wasn't it that even if the war was stop/ceasefire oil prices will take a long time to recover? If that is true the domestic pop getting pissed might be true even with this ceasefire and it will hurt the current government in their upcoming elections.

> 3. Reminded the anti regime population that they’re not going anywhere and that the US can’t help them.

More like galvanized people against a common enemy. Regime is going to come down hard on the protestors than ever before and some might find it easier to blame the power which claimed to deliver the regime change. Then Americans will talk about how Iranians hate their way of life and the attack was justified.

thisisit··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
> All policy aimed at preventing nuclear Iran has one goal: buy time. I think it is hard to argue that time has not been bought (though how much and whether the price was right is another question).

Given that Iran has been one week/one month/one year away from acquiring nuclear capabilities since 2014 - first Trump Presidency, and they are not any closer a decade later this "buying time" rhetoric is nothing short of "Iraq has WMD" level of absurdity.

thisisit··on Tesla Is Sitting on a Record 50k Unsold EVs
The amount of apologia exists for Musk actions is just mind boggling. It seems to me that people want all the good from the hype Musk brings, but if things go wrong - Why don't people think of the poor workers?

You live by the sword, you die by the sword. If people were so smart where were they when Musk was hyping autonomous vehicles being just around the corner for years? Or the fact that the board of directors kept raising his compensation to insane levels because he kept threatening them that he'll walk out? The company chose to do this. People didn't. Now that he is tanking the valuation, we don't need to separate out Tesla and Musk. They are one and the same.

thisisit··on Claude Code users hitting usage limits 'way faster than expected'
They keep running experiments like free $50 in extra use credits or 2x usage outside certain windows where inference is very slow. You can’t help but think this is all a slowly boiling the frog experiment. Experimenting how much they can charge.

It was Trump who made that deal to withdraw from Afghanistan by May 2021. Biden as POTUS followed through with some delays.

So, what was this about not being a bogeyman being conjured by right again?

thisisit··on I tried to prove I'm not AI. My aunt wasn't convinced
Laws will be passed to make it "safer". Just like it is happening with the id verification systems. Every image or video gen will require a watermark. Something visible which cannot be removed easily or hidden which can be detected and blocked. Access to models which do not comply will be made harder through id verification checks or something.

There will be some regulatory capture in between.

World will kick into gear only when something really bad happens. Maybe a influential person - rich or politician - fooled into doing something catastrophic due to a deepfake video/image. Until then normal people being affected isn't going to move the needle.

thisisit··on Iranians describe scenes of catastrophe after Tehran's oil depots bombed
Trump has always been incoherent.

On one hand he had "No new wars", he also was pretty clear on his disdain for Middle Eastern countries - the ones not giving him millions in bribes.

People knew that he was incoherent and inconsistent. He proved that during his first Presidency. So, I don't think it is a case of "not what people voted for". People are getting exactly what they voted for - chaos and incoherence.

As you said, Congress doesn't want to do anything due to elections. And courts have declared that President actions are always justified.

Choices beyond losing election requires either of these branches to act. Without that, wait for the next election.

thisisit··on Noem Can't Explain Why She Hired 8-Day-Old Company for Ad Campaign
I understand Presidential pardons are abused but I wouldn't say at least this is not "both sides", this is worse.

For years there were corporate overlords lobbying and corruption. That was "both sides".

Now this "side" has been railing against corruption by the "other side" and how they are going to put every corrupt person in jail and most "transparent" government.

Turns out they are much worse. Don't even know how to be corrupt properly. Just blatantly corrupt. When corned keep doing whataboutism - forgetting that even if the "other side" was corrupt it doesn't mean they can be corrupt too. Worse yet they still get support from their base.

Make no mistake - this is making US a low trust society on par with a third world country.

thisisit··on India's top court angry after junior judge cites fake AI-generated orders
It's sad that it took the highest court in the country to point out lack of professionalism and misconduct.

The judge took no personal responsibility.

> She told the court that this was her first time using an AI tool and she had believed the citations to be "genuine". She had no intention to misquote or misrepresent the rulings and that "the mistake occurred solely due to the reliance on an automatic source", the high court wrote.

She had one job. And that was to read the citations. Instead of owning up to the mistake of being lazy all she wanted to talk about "intentions".

The high court also took no responsibility.

> In its order, the high court said that "the citations may be non-existent, but if the learned trial court has considered the correct principles of law and its application to the facts of the case is also correct,

This line of reasoning is questionable and attempt to gaslight everyone. Judges cite other cases in their judgement. But if the junior judge had no clue that the references were fake what correct principles was she applying?

End of the day maybe the judgement is correct but this overall bullshit.

Given that this is happening all over the world people seem to have a convenient excuse - The AI made me do it.

thisisit··on AI is making junior devs useless
That might work for you - sure.

But different people have different ambitions. Some might not care for comp and want to become a people manager. Decent management is aware of this "different ambition" dynamic and try to mitigate this.

Also, this doesn't solve the problem of cost. Too many engineers without their comp based on promotions will still mean costly teams. That's why a balance of junior and senior is needed.

thisisit··on AI is making junior devs useless
> Junior devs have always been useless

> The same ethos makes sense with AI, it's just that every company is trying to avoid paying that training tax.

Last time when a junior dev was added to my team I had a similar thought. But then talking with management I was informed that things went beyond just training.

The company had a social responsibility pledge and understanding with the local educational institutions. They had to pledge to be part of the internship and hiring activities every year. The company could not chose to be fair weather friends and try to recruit people only when they saw fit.

The other aspect was cost. A team made of only senior engineers was costly.

The last aspect was leveling up. Unless the company has lots of levels the team might end up lots of engineers at the same level. And with the inverted funnel nature of promotions it meant some engineers might end up waiting years for the promotion.

So, it was better to have teams with some junior, intermediate and experienced engineers. That way costs and promotion flows were controlled.

Now with AI the impact might go beyond junior devs. I see even the intermediate devs being impacted. It is more likely that companies think they can replace say 1 junior + 1 intermediate with 1 junior dev with AI. Or something along those lines.

The whole “humans also do this” isn’t a winning defence here. Humans and copyright has long history and so much law that it is easy to get confused.

The default assumption here seems to be that the system needs to be broken. This is similar to the Google defence. If a user intent is to search for a cracked software what can poor Google do about it? The answer is to make it even more difficult.

This is a defence also used by torrent sites using magnet urls. “We don’t host files” is the default defence. But then if these sites get hit with DMCA they are required to remove the magnet url.

So the article shows what the lawyer is saying. Despite claims that it is difficult to search for full books, it really isn’t so. It is trivial. When it goes to court and it will, AI models will be required to make it even more difficult and allow for a DMCA like takedowns.

Most of the politics comes down to tribalism. And within this tribalism nothing works better than Us vs Them. Immigration is one of the best "us vs them" debates. It rallies lot of support.

But then often immigration isn't the problem. It is a solution preying on the fear of people that "outsiders" are harming their opportunities, housing, way of life etc. The real problem is that people are not making living wages and wages are not catching up to cost of living.

As politicians pushing anti-immigration come to power they also realize this problem. They'd rather not solve immigration because then they need to face up to the actual living wage crisis issue. It also helps keeping the immigration talking point open so that it can be used in next election.

thisisit··on Thanks a lot, AI: Hard drives are sold out for the year, says WD
This is what a business cycle looks like.

Seeing the first mover succeed, every Tom, Dick and Harry wants to emulate. It distorts the price because people would pay premium for everything. Then there is surplus supply and no takers. People are caught with their pants down and things go for cheap.

This repeats ad nauseum. Whether it was building ISPs during early 2000s or the abundance of streaming service where every media company wanted one. Just because the corporate overlord doesn't want to look foolish for not following a trend.

Most of the use cases I have found is people using it to automate the day to day stuff - as it comes with calendar, memory and heartbeat feature. You can do the same stuff using other tools but then you wouldn’t feel smart or the tool wouldn’t feel smart because it is not AI.

thisisit··on US businesses and consumers pay 90% of tariff costs, New York Fed says
Maybe you have been fed a lie?

In most free trade agreements many products are without tariffs, some have quotas and others yet have tariff. For example, under CUSMA Canada have no tariffs on US made apparel and footwear, diary is under quota and steel has 25-50% tariffs. But then if you hear someone who lies a lot and has an agenda they will only tell you about steel tariffs and make you think that all US made products are under tariff.

I am confused by your logic.

You start off with

> I think blanket tariffs are dumb don't get me wrong.

Then add a conjunction and use a single example to just make a point opposite to what you started with.

> So in my opinion, we've seen where they can work.

I can't help but think that you don't believe blanket tariffs are dumb because it worked for one industry and helps American jobs. Just start with that please.
