thinkyfish··on Ambient Chaos
if you're on windows, you can load 64-bit VST plugins into Equalizer APO. Can confirm, cloud 9.
thinkyfish··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown
I've found that many people (myself included) start down the path of Vipassana(analysis) type of meditation too early or from a position where we weren't prepared for the consequences. I wish I had spent more time with metta(compassion) and samatha (calmness) meditation and build up stability/forbearance and kindness/compassion first before starting to de-construct experience. It is said that one type of meditation leads to the others and even with Vipassana you might have the realization that "I'm suffering because I was doing a thing, I laid the trap and stepped in it" and achieve peace of mind, but that won't happen on a schedule. I would recommend any busy person to avoid Vipassana until they have more experience and focus more on sense-calming (avoiding sensuality), and compassion/generosity practice. It will bring a quicker (though possibly less deep) taste of the peace of mind that is possible.
thinkyfish··on Electron vs. Qt for a new open-source project? Looking for advice
If your thinking about using Qt, check out U++(https://www.ultimatepp.org/), its pretty powerful and I've never seen a better designed IDE for C++.
thinkyfish··on Guix: Unifying provisioning, deployment, and management in the age of containers
I heard somewhere that they are going to include it in the distro, so no guix deploy afaik, just the package manager itself as a package you can install. This should bring a lot more attention to the project at least.
thinkyfish··on Guix: Unifying provisioning, deployment, and management in the age of containers
I honestly believe that Guix will eventually pull out ahead of NixOS, simply because its going to be part of Debian 11. NixOS is a bit easier to set up and use for now, especially for provisioning simple linux servers around commonly used packages.
thinkyfish··on Fish shell
I really like fish shell. After ditching bash and picking up ksh for its much nicer array notation, I needed a frontend shell, and it really fits the bill. Its defaults are really friendly, and it is very configurable.
thinkyfish··on Nim 2.0 thoughts
The biggest thing that nim needs isn't a language change, it is to make it easy (or more expected) to put .dll's in nimble libraries. Wheels in python is one of the major reasons i'm using it. Who needs to figure out how to compile qt? I can just pip install PySide6, why can't I do that with nim? Yes, it's a lot more work vetting licenses and testing/patching things to make them work on various platforms (about the same amount of work as a linux distro), but thats the best road I can see for adoption.
thinkyfish··on Sunlight Neutralizes SARS-CoV-2 8x Faster Than Initially Assumed
So the neutralization time was not mentioned in this article, so I dug one article down and found this: "According to the letter, the experiments demonstrated virus inactivation times of about 10-20 minutes" which evidently comes from this letter https://academic.oup.com/jid/advance-article/doi/10.1093/inf...
thinkyfish··on Mozilla Welcomes the Rust Foundation
Having taken a stab at getting into that language, I can tell you the package landscape is freakish. Either you get on the Jane Street Train, or you slum it with packages from 2003 that don't have support (and probably dont build anymore anyway) Good luck getting things working on Windows. Honestly even Haskell is a better choice in that language space even though its getting eaten by Rust (and for good reasons).
thinkyfish··on Scuttlebutt – A decentralized secure gossip platform
I feel like shared blocklists will become an emergent feature of this platform, as it inevitably will be used for planning violent/illegal activities and harassment, and I feel that pubs and individuals would want a way to combat such things to promote more focused membership (for topic forums for example). There will be ident wars where blocked individuals will then create new idents which have to be identified and blocked and so on, and there is little other than not inviting people to prevent this. The basic infrastructure of forum moderation seems possible, but I think automated/subscribable block lists would become a standardized feature of clients.
thinkyfish··on Would it be ethically justifiable to make the Covid vaccine mandatory?
As a counter, you cannot have bodily sovereignty if your dead (lest we tempt the tyranny of the dead over the living), and if your body is making others dead, that also deprives them of bodily sovereignty. This injustice is offset by the vaccine (it seems to be effective and safe) and so we prevent possibly many violations of sovereignty with the single certain injustice of the vaccine. This utilitarian argument may not be palatable, but we may not have our choice of actions here (the virus doesn't care!)
