thinkloop··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
Whether you fund UBI through printing or not is unrelated to the function of banks. Society still needs to divert extra cash to people who are extra productive with ideas and businesses. But how do you know how much extra money to give to whom? You make a dedicated layer in society who's sole function and incentive structure is to distribute that money to those most likely to use it best and name it "banks".

I agree but preventing parents from providing security for their children is a form of harm. One could then argue that if all wealth were recycled, the state would be so strong that parents would feel even safer for their children in such a system - but then you're back to state vs. individual, socialism vs. freedom, etc., etc.

You were not serving that traffic, you were just serving your core functionality - no tracking, no analytics, no ads, no a/b, no dark mode, no social login, no responsiveness. Are most of those shitty? Sure, just let me know when you figure out how to pry a penny from your users for all your hard work.
thinkloop··on Who’s behind Wednesday’s epic Twitter hack?
Obama and Biden are part of it

Capone got nailed for evasion because his brother got nailed for evasion and he got scared so he tried to preemptively normalize his own tax situation but in doing so indirectly admitted that he hadn't paid taxes, so they busted him with no further evidence required.

But they also were trying to bust him for evasion because he declared zero income and lived a visibly lavish lifestyle. The government was gathering evidence on his spending to estimate his income and how much he evaded.

You can't sustainably solve that problem by simply paying lots of tax on magic illegal money, especially not in today's interconnected world. Laundering is core to the solution.

thinkloop··on Live BTC transactions in Twitter hack
It's too time-consuming and/or dangerous to do any meaningful amounts, and it is monitored. You would probably have to wear a mask at the drop as well and things like that. Safer to just coinjoin + mix + xmr.

I would've guessed they would've raised more, maybe they thought so too.

That's not how pseudonymity works, you are anonymous until you accidentally leak, or have to leak, PII linked to your wallet. They can be totally anonymous right now without any mixing. Once they need to convert to fiat they may have to mix first. Or maybe exchange cash wearing a mask with a stranger on the street in a foreign country, etc. Pseudonymity doesn't mean you're not anonymous until you mix.

thinkloop··on Bitcoin is more like ham radio than the early internet
> The lightning network seems to be heading toward centralization, then what it the point? Is the delta of Credit card transaction fees with lnd fees that big that it warrants it? especially if credit card fees drop with time.

There is a massive difference between temporary centralization for convenience vs. fundamental centralization. See email. Gmail basically has the entire market, but that is a world of difference from email being a proprietary private Google protocol. People can switch at any time. If a provider misbehaves they can be abandoned. The users have the power. The same holds for complaints against coinbase, the internet in general, etc.

Why? If the attacker can get that much hash then so can the miners.

thinkloop··on Refined Hacker News
I've always wondered whether HN's "off-putting", "serious" interface (it is when you first see it) is an important factor in it not devolving into reddit.
thinkloop··on The Wrong Abstraction (2016)
A related problem: duplication is not equality. If two things happen to be the same right now, it doesn't mean they are intrinsically the same thing. If you have multiple products selling for $59.99 they shouldn't share a function to generate the "duplicate" price. Abstractions needs to be driven by conceptual equivalence, not value equivalence, where duplication is a good hint for a potential candidate of abstraction, but not the complete answer alone.
thinkloop··on How McKinsey helps companies avoid responsibility
It's more than just benchmarking, a core part of the model is being able to legally share proprietary information. With a veneer of anonymity a person's "knowledge" and "experience" are too nebulous to regulate strictly - similar to silicon valley nda's.

Double-check that your initial privacy excitement during setup isn't the culprit. The couple of times that happened to me (Paypal being one) lowering my "Browser Privacy" setting from "strict" or "custom" back to "standard" fixed the issue. I would be curious to see examples of broken sites if you have em.
thinkloop··on Show HN: 100% offline Shamir's Secret Sharing GUI
The only thing I don't like about that is that it is dependent on the network. Some cryptos don't have multi-sig for example. It's a full system, you have to be aware of protocol changes and such - Shamir is straight math and works on any type of key independent of the system. Trade-offs as usual I guess.

Are you pinning it on your server, is that how that works?
thinkloop··on Show HN: 100% offline Shamir's Secret Sharing GUI
I envisioned the keys coming together at the notary's along with the rest of the estate, with a transaction immediately executed to the final recipient. This is a semi-trusted setup after-all. Also the final recipient would likely be one of the key holders present at the ceremony.
thinkloop··on Show HN: 100% offline Shamir's Secret Sharing GUI
Shamir is one of the suggested ways to restore crypto in case of death with more decentralized trust. You select 20 friends and give them each one of the keys, then at your funeral 10 or more of them come together to unlock your wallet and execute your will. But it has a big problem: rot.

It needs to be accompanied by a system that ensures everything is still in tact. The system would ping every key holder every X months and have them prove they are still in possession of their key. If a problem arises the wallet owner is alerted to deal with it. Otherwise she gets an all clear report.

The annoying thing tho is now there is a centralized 3rd-party database of all your key holders. Part of the security is nobody knowing who's in on it. Imagine a wallet with $100M. That database starts becoming valuable. So the service would have to be zero-knowledge or hosted, but now you're hosting stuff, and not just any stuff, the most valuable stuff, requiring top security.

CSP = Content Security Policy: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/CSP

"To enable CSP, you need to configure your web server to return the Content-Security-Policy HTTP header (sometimes you will see mentions of the X-Content-Security-Policy header, but that's an older version and you don't need to specify it anymore).

Alternatively, the <meta> element can be used to configure a policy, for example: <meta http-equiv="Content-Security-Policy" content="default-src 'self'; img-src https://*; child-src 'none';">"
