thinking4real··on Southwest flight upheaval a 'system failure,' U.S. says
Maybe next they should spin it as the fault of climate change.
thinking4real··on How Twitter moderated the Covid debate
It was pretty amazing to witness the final erosion of public trust that was the covid/Trump era.

From hereon out we have two factions of humanity - those who will believe anything said by authority and those who know knowledge can only be ascertained through deduction and reason.

I’d never have thought that once information became ubiquitous that we would lose any ability to rely on it, but the worlds more complicated than I assumed.

thinking4real··on How Twitter moderated the Covid debate
“the times the US president did things like suggest to the public, on live national tv, that consuming bleach could cure Covid.”

This is a lie and you should not be propagating it in the current year. It’s honestly embarrassing you can’t do primary research at all and still talk with authority.

thinking4real··on Thousands trapped on Pine Ridge burn clothes for warmth in wake of storm
It’s false to say there isn’t data and pier reviewed studies on the subject. The link is clear.

However, there’s a lot of propaganda that will pretend otherwise.

thinking4real··on America needs immigrants to solve its labor shortage
No, it doesn’t.

But plenty of wealthy people will get wealthier if it happens.

thinking4real··on The science events to watch for in 2023
Lot of very cool stuff in here, but I really don’t get leading with vaccines similar to the covid vaccine. It just seems like propaganda compared to the rest.
thinking4real··on The cold hard truth about electric vehicles in winter
I’m cracking up that you’re making this sound so simple and matter of fact, but reading this description of how one is “supposed” to charge their EV makes me realize i’m many years from wanting one.

Honestly, it’s kind of a joke how badly people want to defend the tech despite its current shortcomings.

thinking4real··on Tesla ‘full self-driving’ triggered an eight-car crash, a driver tells police
And the article doesn’t state Tesla is making the opposing claim. If it were I’d be equally critical of that press report.

Or maybe to the folks here “some guy claims” is a valid source. Maybe I’m in the wrong lol

thinking4real··on Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang are cooperating in the criminal case against SBF
Oof I didn’t realize that was a feature. That seems like a very poor feature with no UI to acknowledge the fact.
thinking4real··on Hotels turn to robots and room cleanings every 4 days to ease staffing shortages
Ok, but this is still missing a very important element - where the hell are they getting finances to live?

The point OP is making us these people probably need ~$2000 a month to live at an absolute minimum. No luxury, no gadgets, just getting by.

How does one decide “working isn’t worth it” but still magically has these funds?

thinking4real··on The Decline of the City Grid
Let’s see… I can use a form of transit that takes longer. Likely for the majority of people, so much longer that it’s impractical for majority use cases (20 min car ride becomes 40+ min bike ride). I have to physically myself, so I’ll be prepared to be sweaty and live in that all day. If there’s inclement weather I have to wait it out for some unknown length of time or endure the elements (and again be disgusting for whatever I’m off to next). I’m in much greater danger than a car. People will try to steal my bike so I have to worry about that. If I have any amount of baggage with me, I guess good luck. I can’t listen to music vs a premium music experience…

I mean I could go on. Don’t get me wrong, Ive done a bike a primary transit for a year or so. But anyone who’s confused why the average American doesn’t want to is probably a little out of touch to say the least.

thinking4real··on Nearly half of Americans age 18 to 29 are living with their parents
“Young adults need (and should be looking for) character-building independence and freedom. Including and not limited to paying rent on time.”

What a scrooge-like take. Acting as though flinging one’s self into the american capitalist trap is somehow a virtue building endeavor.

It would be interesting what your thoughts are on dumping your parents in a similar “dodgy nursing home” once they aren’t mentally or financially capable anymore. It’s “character-building”, right?

Most other cultures in the world see it as the norm to have multi generational homes. Grandparents can help raise young ones and maintain ethical values (which in the US we basically have lost all sense of).

But sure - making property owners wealthy by picking one’s self up by their bootstraps is probably the moral high ground here.

thinking4real··on Tesla ‘full self-driving’ triggered an eight-car crash, a driver tells police
I’m sure there’s no incentive for a driver who’s responsible for an eight car crash to pass buck
thinking4real··on Wells Fargo Penalties Since 2000: $22B
You should do some deeper research into how what recycling really is.

It is that hard when the vast majority of it is just buried. And the take that it needs to be at the consumer level is corporate brainwashing - if corporations aren’t allowed to use plastic excessively, that would alleviate waste far more than any recycling campaign ever has.

Just make sure to consider the sources you’re using to formulate your opinions.

thinking4real··on Convicted for solving a problem the government refused to address
Yeah, how dare someone volunteer to solve a problem!
thinking4real··on Wells Fargo Penalties Since 2000: $22B
The culture goes even further. We demand individuals to do pointless self flogging rituals like tediously organizing their recycling just to have it be buried in china. Meanwhile corporations are free to waste as much plastic product as they care to without repercussion.

America is all about squeezing the individual for the few in power and wealth.

thinking4real··on Winter & Cold Weather EV Range Loss in 7,000 Cars
I think you’re lying to yourself because you’re an EV fan.

You have to consider what the pushers are saying and if there’s sufficient pushback when they’re misaligned.

Currently that doesn’t happen. Currently you face everything up to deplatforming for speaking against the narrative that EVs are the one true solution.

thinking4real··on Amazon Ring cameras used in nationwide ‘swatting’ spree, US Justice Dept. says
“I’m a member of a minority group that is currently experiencing an uptick in violence from the American public.”

That’s horrible, it’s insane the lengths people will go to satiate their misperceived anger.

What are the violent acts being committed?

thinking4real··on Investigating Logan Paul's biggest scam [video]
That’s not a problem and it’s bizarre seeing all these comments repeating the same message.

Our economic systems were not designed nor ever intended to be a system where good or moral people prevail the most.

But in this age I’m not the least bit surprised that people will go to that great extent of mental gymnastics to for the satisfaction of “getting” someone they see as a villain.

thinking4real··on Twitter will not allow free promotion of certain social media platforms
So you can’t use twitter as a tool to promote your social media accounts on other platforms.

This sounds completely reasonable, just as you wouldn’t expect walmart to let you hold rallies to promote Target while you’re shopping in their store.

Yet again, I’m dismayed at the efforts folks will go through to hate Elon and paint him into this bumbling idiot. Hubris is abound.

thinking4real··on Investigating Logan Paul's biggest scam [video]
Maybe there’s some Darwinian forces at play here.

Afaik, Logan is just some internet moron. He has no credentials or life accomplishments, he’s just a pretty face with an attractive personality.

So if that’s who you’re going to trust to invest your money, maybe it’s good you don’t have as much money. Maybe that’s something that will actually improve our species.

Add in that these people who threw away all this money are happy to come in and laugh about it on camera (how did society get to this point where submitting your humiliation is normal?)… like what are we really upset about here? That losers are losers and they’re being taken advantage of?

That’s life. Maybe if people weren’t so insulated from their consequences they’d be raised to actually see these things from a mile away.

thinking4real··on Why fusion will never happen (2012)
Sounds like a dystopian reality where we revert back to only really functioning when the sun is in the sky.
thinking4real··on Winter & Cold Weather EV Range Loss in 7,000 Cars
Everyone’s repeating they find this strange. Is it really strange?

I’ve been excited for EVs all my life. But there’s a certain level of propaganda that’s come with them.

Explicitly talking about their downsides seems to be taboo. Like you’ll get downvoated or banned on many social media platforms for doing it.

thinking4real··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
Only elon haters could have so much cognitive dissonance that they’ll see self driving cars and privatized space and say “yeah, well what else has he done?”
thinking4real··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
“He’s in a downward spiral that’s rapidly gaining speed.”

Yeah, he owns the worlds largest auto company, largest rocket company, and just threw down $40 billion to buy the worlds biggest social media company.

Dude is in dire straights indeed.

thinking4real··on Ask HN: How is Snapchat getting away with no content moderation?
This attitude is way too prevalent for how badly society is crumbling
thinking4real··on Los Angeles Bans New Oil Wells, Plans to Close Existing Ones
Humor me - your article talks about investment companies building real estate right by the water. The articles tout large numbers, but are almost entirely vague as to what that money is used for.

The only things I see are pumps and raising roads… the Netherlands has been implementing both of those technologies for hundreds of years. I’m sure Florida, being a swamp, has has these kinds of issues before and has solved the issues similarly.

My point being - in the abstract, these sources do very little to convince one that the climate change prophecies are coming to fruition. I remember hearing cities would be flooded by 2020, not they need to raise the roads in problematic areas but real estate investment continues undeterred

thinking4real··on Generative AI is here to stay, but so are artists
“Art is a fundamentally human pursuit and any suggestion these generators are replacing artists is not true. Let us think about impactful art in 2022: it is not pure mimicry of other artists; it is not odd images of Alex Jones in his basement; it is not posters of Soviet Afrofuturism. Impactful art is collectives such as Forensic Architecture – who act as an investigative taskforce, creating videos and aesthetic presentations of state violence and human rights violations, to correct official narratives.”

This was a very lengthy article which never seemed to approach this thesis till the very end.

To the people who are claiming this and clearly not on the chopping block let’s be clear - artists aren’t going away. We’ll probably always have artists even if AI totally surpasses us in the same way that we still have craftsmen despite machining automation.

But ~99% of professional artistic creation is not this high level abstraction. It’s not doing this.

It’s creating a drawing to become a tattoo. It’s drawing a decal to be put on a rave shirt. It’s nudging a web element till it “looks right”.

The vast majority of art, just like the vast majority of producing sneakers, will be automated where it can be and humans will fill in the new gaps created which will not be what we currently consider to be art.

I’m not an artist, but hearing tech folk reassuring artists that they have nothing to worry about is a very nauseating side product of getting shiny new AI.

thinking4real··on Ethereum paving the way for environmentally friendly Bitcoin mining
People invested in the hardware for a profitable means, they’re going to continue using the hardware for a profitable means.

This reminds me of how even if you bust a lot of illegal drug operations you paradoxically don’t seem to inhibit the flow of illegal drugs in a country.

thinking4real··on Google switching to continuous scrolling for desktop Search results
I’d love a google feature which would also block duplicate results. Esp with images or video.

Different page but same image… you get 50 of the same image in a search that claims to have billions of images available is pretty laughable tech

Tbh I’ve always enabled infinite scrolling
