thinking4real··on Higher rates will lead to the next generation of great tech startups
Or maybe modulating the macro economy as perversely as was done for covid simply created a bunch of chaos that needs to settle before the regular economic growth continues considering we’re nowhere near scientific, engineering or mineral extraction ubiquity
thinking4real··on First signs of spring have arrived in parts of south 3 weeks sooner than average
Funny, I was in Iowa recently and being unable to shower because the pipes froze + decent snowfall was definitely a meme
thinking4real··on Ask HN: I'd like to learn how to tell stories better to friends
Everyone here is giving you some generic advice about doing xyz principle to achieve maximal entertainment

The best way to tell a story to a friend is to make a story your friend wants to hear.

Know your friends, and amusing them should be pretty easy

thinking4real··on Amazon Will Start Charging Prime Members for US Grocery Orders of Less Than $150
You mean something being delivered from one part of a city to another in 1-2 days should cost, on average, with the economy of scales, significantly more than $5.99?

Being able to pick an optimal time, I can have my person delivered across the city for $20 or so. That’s with all sorts of liability and no “one delivery serves many” model to maximize profit

I think you’re overestimating the value of transporting a small, light box

thinking4real··on First signs of spring have arrived in parts of south 3 weeks sooner than average
Within the last month in the US midwest it got below -50 with windchill and over 2 feet of snow
thinking4real··on Bell Telephone launched a mobile phone during the 1940s
It’s more comfortable not to be seen (you don’t have to look certain ways), but also I’m not about the idea that anyone can record me and use my image for whatever reason they want

When I’m compensated like a celebrity, Ill take on the risk. Till then, you don’t need to see my face to know what I’m saying

thinking4real··on Arizona legislature changes rules on retaining correspondence
“The government doesn’t respect your privacy, but you should respect its privacy”

Seriously?

thinking4real··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
Wow, this almost feels like the old internet and old google.

Generic results from a few corporate entities has become ubiquitous, but here you can type whatever and it seems to give a broad range of results.

Wow, this actually feels like a search engine. It’s been a while since I’ve felt this.

How do you rank the results?

thinking4real··on An AI lawyer was set to argue in court – real lawyers shut it down
“Then maybe the judge gets upset and gives them the harshest punishment or contempt of court”

That sounds like a horrible judge, maybe this AI can be used to sniff them out and get rid of them.

thinking4real··on Google is screwed, even if it wins its antitrust case
I tend to agree with you, or at least the sentiment of “not perpetual growth”, but I think then we run into the problem that the US might lose dominance in various industries to countries who won’t throttle their corps like that

Which maybe isn’t the worst. Maybe we’d see an exodus of the rats in our own govt and leadership as they chase their efforts into the new world leaders.

Maybe this is the end stage of capitalism and while it was a good experiment to get us into worth surplus it comes at the cost of liberty. Maybe at some point we just need to tweak the entire economic system into the next era.

thinking4real··on Meta Ending Suspension of Trump’s Accounts
“The public should be able to hear what politicians are saying so they can make informed choices.”

Oh that’s hilarious. After tech companies stifling a sitting president, now they are going to straight faced claim this like it means a damn thing.

This is insulting to users’ intelligence.

thinking4real··on One of the World’s Coldest Places Is Now the Warmest It’s Been in 1k Years
Ngl, for someone who’s gloating so much - you sent some crummy cnn article which didn’t show any theory or model, much less one being correct
thinking4real··on Google Play Store will be forced to house other app stores by next week in India
Because you’re just using the courts to stall and prevent competition to generate profit. You know you’ll lose and the courts know you know you’ll lose.
thinking4real··on What we look for in a resume
Oh they literally want code on github. And that’s a hard no for me and should be for most.

I don’t play these games. I don’t take tests, I don’t have public repos, and I’m not going to change that.

Why? Because these tests are arbitrary, faulty, and highly based in subjectivity. They are costly to me both in time and mental health.

Back when I was fresh and did them, I found that I always ended up starting a new job with a bad attitude. Well duh, it’s abusive to make a person stand in front of others and have them evaluate their worth live. It’s abusive to ask someone to work for you for free so that they can see if they like you.

It’s a terrible cycle and it shouldn’t be justified or normalized.

There are plenty of people out there who want to hire you without coming up with idiotic games for you to have to play. Seek them out.

thinking4real··on Ask HN: With recent layoffs, how would you advise new grads entering the market?
So you’re around 45-50 years old, which no offense is quite old if you’re a swe.

I’ve had around 5 jobs, am much younger, and none of them were due to connections (which I have well over 100 professional people who would vouch for me)

I think you’re either in a very fortunate place in society or you’re old enough in this industry to feel the small world effects

Trust me, for the vast majority your situation isn’t normal.

thinking4real··on One of the World’s Coldest Places Is Now the Warmest It’s Been in 1k Years
That’s about what i’ve come to expect from this climate stuff - chest puffing, with no hard science to back it up

I was asking for a source, not yet another vague rambling

thinking4real··on Google Play Store will be forced to house other app stores by next week in India
This was a decision by a supreme court over a year after the initial ruling

Even if google was blinded by this, why exactly can’t this corporation let other stores in its store within a weeks time?

How complicated is this exactly in your opinion?

thinking4real··on Signal app's president-“layoffs in tech are to keep salaries in check”
Many in tech are only their instead of starting direct competition to the major tech players because of the high compensation. Sure I could create my own startup and make more, but with lower pay and way lower headache i’ll take the salary.

If I was being offered what European companies offer swe, i’d be out the door. I might even go take a job that’s enjoyable since the pay isn’t there.

I actually hope this is a broad movement for big tech companies to pay less. I’d love to see an exodus of power from them.

thinking4real··on One of the World’s Coldest Places Is Now the Warmest It’s Been in 1k Years
Can you please give me some sort of published papers or something empirical to demonstrate that we have any control over this to a magnitude that matters?

As far as i’ve ever seen, we have no mechanism to cool the planet currently. Where does the idea that we have control come from? What’s the science?

thinking4real··on Unity lays off nearly 300
That seems to be the case for a lot of these. The numbers seem scary until you view them as a %
thinking4real··on USB-C can hit 120Gbps with newly published USB4 Version 2.0 spec
You see when industries get so big, people make committees to oversee how things are done.

These committees tend to have (or at least give off the feeling of) a lot of power with little actual work being required.

I’m sure most here can think of colleagues from the past that would be the kind to fill this role, and that’s your answer.

thinking4real··on Dear media: Stop illustrating Metaverse articles with pics of people in VR
When the author doesn’t realize that meta has a lot of grip in the media and is dictating that headsets be displayed in an attempt to normalize the dorkyness of wearing them
thinking4real··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
“if Time could confidently say that OpenAI asked for C4 images, they would have absolutely put that in the article.”

All your word salad ignores this reality.

thinking4real··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
Lol yes left wing discourse is just so broad and complex it can’t possibly be generalized when references.
thinking4real··on Ask HN: With recent layoffs, how would you advise new grads entering the market?
“Reach out to every friend, old coworker, etc. especially those that are in management now.”

This advice always cracks me up.

Most people don’t have deep networks of people who can hook them up with a senior level engineering position. Like, even the people I know who are quite well connected don’t really have this option.

Sure, everyone has a buddy who’d love to pay them half for twice the work. But we’re talking relatable fields and jobs that are worth it and that’s just not realistic for majority.

Alternatively, if people had social networks with people who have potentials roles for them, who wouldn’t already think in the social media era “oh yeah, i’ll ask the people I know who have an in instead of going to random strangers”

thinking4real··on GDPR does not allow you to store dark/light mode inside local storage
Have any published studies come out showing what positive effects GDPR provides?
thinking4real··on “After 20 years coding I just realised, commit messages are pointless”
All of the answers to this will amount to being able to find them in some other way.

No one will answer what to do if you have no idea of what’s in the code (bc it’s old or you’re new to this repo).

Basically, this idea is a failure but some people think it’s neat so they’ll come up with contrived justifications that make no sense.

thinking4real··on UK lawmakers vote to jail tech execs who fail to protect kids online
Lol that would happen if they were actually concerned with exec/elite behavior.

This is not about protecting children. This is about clamping down on civilian rights to control the internet and indeed, civilian ability to communicate freely.

If children are being harmed (and they are, more than we’d like to imagine), the answer is simple: shut down social media.

Seriously. Yes we’d lose time wasting places like this. Yes we wouldn’t be as tuned into media ongoings. I’m sure many here will chime in to say how HN or similar has saved their life.

Don’t care, social media isn’t more important than the health of our children. And these companies have shown they don’t care and that profit is more important.

Thus, they needn’t exist.

But that won’t ever even be on the table. Because they don’t give a flying fuck about children. They want profits and control.

thinking4real··on mRNA vaccines induce higher long-term IgG4 response versus adenovirus vaccines
Lol you were greyed out not even for arguing what you’re saying, but simply for giving two examples of what isn’t allowed to be said.

Speaks volumes.

thinking4real··on U.S. tech firms are replacing workers with cheaper talent in Latin America
Because when corporations want to work in unison to scare the workforce into believing they’re worth less so you can pay them less, it’s important to use words that build the brand you’re going for.

For example, if you said “companies are looking to countries without the mental workforce to do their jobs in a bid to save money”, your argument would be weak. People would see your propaganda, laugh, and then look for a new job at another company to jump ship and get a big pay increase.

If instead you refer to those people as “talent”, there’s a small but non negligible percentage of the population who is sheepish enough to become afraid and form some kind of stockholm syndrome to endear them to you as their employer.

For a similar exercise, note how onlyfans doesn’t refer to its workers as “sex workers”, “whores”, or “prostitutes”, but rather as “content creators”.
