thieving_magpie··on Amazon's Bezos Launches $2B Fund to Help the Homeless
I'm not sure "you just have to be in business with Amazon" is all that much better for the global good.
thieving_magpie··on Amazon's Bezos Launches $2B Fund to Help the Homeless
If I have this right, the moral of your story is that small businesses will die and amazon-sized corporations are for the global good.
thieving_magpie··on Google is discontinuing Inbox
Emails relating to a trip would get categorized into it automatically. You still had to pay attention. If an email wasn't detected as part of a trip, you dragged it over to the trip and then it was associated correctly.

Maybe it felt mundane to you but I found it extremely handy when landing in a new place, trying to rent a car, and get to my hotel. Just referencing the same little spot in the app was super helpful.

thieving_magpie··on Google is discontinuing Inbox
I don't mean to be too sarcastic here but what's the point? Google will just shut that down in a few weeks too.
thieving_magpie··on Google is discontinuing Inbox
I'm with you. That's the only way I'd use gmail. When traveling it's so handy to open up the trips and get all your flight/car rental/hotel details in one small space.
thieving_magpie··on Google is discontinuing Inbox
Bundling (including the "Trips") is the only reason I still use any google web client. It's not trivial.
thieving_magpie··on Google is discontinuing Inbox
You've got to be kidding me. This was the last thing I used heavily. I'm out the door now. Good grief does this company frustrate me.
thieving_magpie··on Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads
I should clarify I'm not locked into Amazon. I'm just happy to have it as an option for shopping. I have used Wal Mart and Target when the prices made sense.
thieving_magpie··on Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads
Amazon (and prime as well) is a godsend for those of us that don't live within a 90 minute drive of a Target or Wal Mart.

Congratulations Liam. This is great.
thieving_magpie··on China’s Re-education Camps
>No, it's not. It's Communism.

Well it isn't that either. Let's be clear that it's a concentration camp run by Chinese Communists with 'added brainwashing' as you put it.

thieving_magpie··on Musk mulls taking Tesla private, Saudi sovereign fund builds $2B stake
Man, that's some thick sarcasm (I hope).
thieving_magpie··on The Oldest Building in Every US State
Oh Neil. You silly goose.

I'm glad the fact your structures are older than others brings such delight to your day.

thieving_magpie··on How we spent $30k in Firebase in less than 72 hours
There's nothing guaranteed about a "get out of jail free" card, so factoring that into your decision making is probably a bad road to go down.
thieving_magpie··on How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
That's why I was careful to say these are the conditions only in my immediate region. In my opinion grouping this by State is too macro. There are charter schools in my area predominantly attended by black students but they are central and easily accessible. There are charter schools further away from the city center that require additional travel that is simply not as affordable to lower income students. The numbers at a state level would show a more distributed attendance by race that the reality does not reflect.
thieving_magpie··on How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
Where I live they are often attended by white students to avoid public schools that have sizable black student populations.

There are many benefits and drawbacks to charter schools. The conditions in my area are not universal to other parts of the country.

thieving_magpie··on Georgia Has a Coast?
I worried that the oral history I'd always gotten about Sea Island was off. I should have checked into that. Are my memories of riding bikes to it as a kid off base?

You're right developers are destroying trees. I guess what I was alluding to was the historical restrictions on building sizes and things like that.

thieving_magpie··on Georgia Has a Coast?
I'm jealous. I visit several times a year and often think about just moving there. I'd eat too much southern soul though, it's for the best.
thieving_magpie··on Georgia Has a Coast?
Many people are probably familiar with St. Simon's from the 30th g8 summit, though they technically refer to it as Sea Island (more on that in a moment).

St Simon's has changed over the years. It's finally succumbing to development though they are being careful about it so as not to kill the golden goose (a very private feeling island). Most of the people that lived there prior to its rise in popularity have been driven out by high prices or cashed out if they were lucky enough to own land. The Eastern part of the island has become much more accessible to lower income populations. (edit: I've got this next sentence wrong as corrected in a comment below)Rich homeowners, as a result, erected a guarded gate in front of Sea Island (basically part of SSI) to keep everyone out.

I still love SSI. My only hope is that it doesn't continue on the path it's currently on. Privacy and exclusion are separate ideas. SSI can still be private, but it doesn't necessarily have to exclusive. My hope is that can change. However, my head tells me that everything I like about SSI is scarce and prices will only continue to climb, driving away those not fortunate enough to afford it.

thieving_magpie··on Peter Thiel: “Hypnotic Mass Phenomena”
US Health care costs are wildly expensive but describing healthcare in Europe as "free" seems terribly misleading.
thieving_magpie··on Ask HN: Google receiving updated credit card numbers – is that legal?
It isn't just google and even then you're blaming the wrong entity. This is your credit card company. I'm sure this solves a particular problem for credit card companies by significantly reducing their middle-man involvement between a customer and business in regards to their contracts. However, this should absolutely be an opt-in feature.

Your behavior isn't a bug but it is atypical. Your workaround to an infrequent problem just requires a new step: closing and opening new credit card accounts.

thieving_magpie··on Show HN: Amatino – A double-entry accounting API
The pricing is attractive. It's low enough that I would consider prototyping against it to see if it'd work for a future project.
thieving_magpie··on Let’s celebrate Hugo’s 5th birthday
Thank you for curing my curiosity.
thieving_magpie··on Thailand cave rescue: all 12 boys and coach successfully rescued
The monsoon season starts in July. They went in at the end of June. All warning signs in front of the cave are about July through October. There's a risk there sure but you're giving out bad information here needlessly.
thieving_magpie··on Let’s celebrate Hugo’s 5th birthday
Maybe this isn't the correct place to ask a question like this but how do you avoid interacting with a database or user accounts? Is it at simple as you don't have any of that in your application?
thieving_magpie··on Behind the Messy, Expensive Split Between Facebook and WhatsApp’s Founders
I'm going to need an internal panel indicating the occupation of each stall.
thieving_magpie··on Behind the Messy, Expensive Split Between Facebook and WhatsApp’s Founders
I don't use the bathroom on a plane. I'm at a young enough age that holding it isn't too complicated. Though it has been some time since I did a 6+ hour flight.
thieving_magpie··on Behind the Messy, Expensive Split Between Facebook and WhatsApp’s Founders
I'm torn on this one. One the one hand I would love that extra privacy.

On the other, I really value knowing if someone is in the stall next to me and how many people are in the bathroom. If the stalls extend to the ground how am I supposed to scan for legs? Someone could be hiding in there waiting to frighten me! I cannot use the bathroom until everyone has left it. Just how am I supposed to verify that some quick-footed coworker hasn't made their way in during someone's loud flush?

I cannot stomach this game of chance.

thieving_magpie··on I Got Catfished by a Candidate
>Rule #2: Take a long hard look at a candidate’s social profiles.

That worries me if I need to enter the job market. I have no social media profile with my name attached to it. I don't enjoy the facebook/twitter/instagram style sites.
