thewizardofaus··on The world is hungry for solar panels. Why did Australia stop making them?
Local Solar Panel manufacturing isn't the problem in Australia. It's the poor maintenance and refusal to upgrade transmission lines to support increased solar feeding into the grid.

In a couple of years residents in South Australia will have to pay to export solar power to the grid. Likewise, it's already possible for the electricity distributor to remotely turn off you solar inverter if excess solar is being generated in your area.

thewizardofaus··on The problem with ‘follow your dream’
I think it's important to be realistic with your dreams and expectations for them.

I am an 'elite athlete'. I compete in one of the oldest sports/events in history.

I am top 3 in the country and top 60 in the world.

My dream is to be a full-time athlete and represent my country at the 2024 Olympics and also many Major international competitions.

Unfortunately, I will never make a 'living' from my sport. After sponsorship deals and prize money the Top 5 athletes in the world are making $100K USD (before flights/accommodation/manager fees)

I am perfectly content with that and it has influenced my lifestyle greatly.

I chose to get a good education and work from home and pursue X/Y/Z because it gives me more freedom to Train and pursue my "real-dreams".

thewizardofaus··on Face masks effectively limit the probability of SARS-CoV-2 transmission
Have any studies been completed yet on immune system efficiency/suppression after covid restrictions (masks, hand sanitizer etc) ?

In Australia we were very lucky with the COVID situation. And purely annecdotal, but I know many people who haven't been sick at all during the pandemic. But as we approach winter here and perhaps no longer hand sanitize appropriately, many of these people are becoming "the most unwell [they] have been in years".

thewizardofaus··on Home Gardening
Gardening is a great relaxing hobby!

I've done it on and off for the last several years.

During COVID I grew 100kg/220lbs of tomatoes.

thewizardofaus··on AirGradient: DIY Air Quality Monitoring with Open-Source Hardware & Firmware
Great initiative! Look forward to hopefully making one soon.
thewizardofaus··on Study shows printed books are still preferred to e-books
Nothing beats the feeling of a printed book.

However, I find that I have a preference for printed vs Ebook depending on situation.

Any book that's more than 400+ pages and/or is more academic in nature. I'm reading in eBook.

Short non-fiction books I prefer in printed (Sapiens, Black Swan, joking Mr Feynham etc).

thewizardofaus··on I booked my cheapest one-month trip
I often find that flight prices can be influenced by what you have looked at previously (other competitor, clear cache and cookies etc). It's quite a shady practice.
thewizardofaus··on A Tetris clone for refreshable Braille displays
I was unaware that refreshable Braille displays existed. This is excellent. Good job!
thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: Have you observed any Covid-19 related panic buying yet?
From speaking to people working in retail 4 weeks ago; a large portion of items that have "been cleared out" locally were being sent overseas to China.
thewizardofaus··on Australia fires: Aboriginal planners say the bush 'needs to burn'
The amount of bush in Australia is incredible.

120+ million hectares, equivalent to three times the size of California !

Doing this manually would be far too time consuming.

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: How do you make your warm-up time shorter
To be honest I think it's perfectly normal. I'm very much the same :)

The only times I don't have this "warming up stage" is when I have a problem from the day previously that I somehow figured out a feasible solution in my sleep

thewizardofaus··on Day of week of procedure and 30 day mortality for elective surgery (2013)
Reminds me of a study they did for... chance to get parole approved based on time of day. Findings were early in morning and after lunch breaks was the most successful time. Just before clock-off and lunch inmates chances were reduced.
thewizardofaus··on Play Sports for a Quieter Brain: Evidence from Division I Collegiate Athletes
I train 20 hours a week for my sport, on top of full time study at University and running my own freelance business on the side.

While I advocate for sport, nothing beats meditation for increased focus!

I have tracked my stress levels over the last few years. During stretches of when I meditated, and did not.

I have absolutely noticed a difference in my internal thoughts and actions.

Before, my thoughts felt like I was in a forest surrounded by fog, visibility was impossible.

But now, I feel like the fog is slowly lifting, I am able to see the outline of the surroundings.

Give it a shot, It only takes a couple weeks of meditation to notice a difference :)

thewizardofaus··on Australia faces rethink: prepares for long-term bushfires and air pollution
A bit sensationalist. Eastern states don't do prescribed burn off for bushland. Which has made a significant difference in these ongoing fires.
thewizardofaus··on US births decline for fourth year in a row, CDC says
I surmise the following reasons:

Poorer populations have less access to sex education.

The government pays $850 a fortnight to a single mother, on top of a $5000 baby bonus and various other incentive schemes. Poor social classes see this as an easy means of money compared to working a "dead-end" job.

Maybe they have kids to escape their reality. People cope in different ways; drugs, drinking etc. Maybe they desperately want to live through their kids.

thewizardofaus··on Nine-year-old child to graduate university
Excellent parenting. Kids need to be kids; no matter how intelligent :)
thewizardofaus··on Is sugar really bad for you? (2018)
I recently started tracking my diet more and realised I've been having 200+ grams of sugar a day !
thewizardofaus··on Instagram to test hiding like counts in the US
Old versions of the app do not remove the like count.
thewizardofaus··on Extreme haunted house McKamey Manor is a torture chamber, petition says
This had got recent attention in the mainstream media. I went down the rabbit hole of reading about McKamey Manor a couple years ago. It's very very strange and somethings don't add up.
thewizardofaus··on Tesla, in SEC filing, says U.S. auto sales fell by $2B
Seeing more and more is small scale sample size and bias.
thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: What are current problems or trends regarding cybersecurity?
What about companies not taking responsibility of their own data?

You could talk about how FB makes $15 per quarter from users and they give up X,Y,Z of data. Yet 90% of the userbase wouldn't pay $15 a month for a advertisement free platform.

Alternatively, how about the Equifax hacks? And your Thesis could be on pricing users data. And viable compensation measures.

thewizardofaus··on A Million People Are Jailed at China's Gulags. Here's What Goes on Inside
Absolutely devastating. I wish I could help in some way, but I feel powerless.
thewizardofaus··on Texas Bitcoin Mining Startup Gets $50M from Peter Thiel
The same reason that certain stocks are overvalued and undervalued. Speculation.
thewizardofaus··on Australia Just Had a Bad Flu Season. That May Be a Warning for the U.S.
Cold showers are great for immune system. Been taking them daily for the last 3 years.
thewizardofaus··on Ivan Chisov
I perhaps wonder if he survived due to his unconcious state. Similar concept to how drunk drivers generally suffer less injuries due to their body being relaxed upon impact.
thewizardofaus··on Mobile data: Why India has the world's cheapest
Throttling speed for porn isn't a bad thing. Porn is a waste of time and energy!
thewizardofaus··on Google Moves to Address Wage Equity, and Finds It’s Underpaying Many Men
I once applied for a scholarship that did not advertise itself as a Male or Female only scholarship. In the fine print it quoted: "women will receive first priority for this scholarship."
thewizardofaus··on The design and building of a large dish antenna rotor
Great read. I was only looking into antenna rotors yesterday, so glad this came up.
thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: What is your failure story?
I developed an app many years ago , helping students find cheap eats around campus. The traction for people to use it was their but I didn't plan for the food stall owners to be extremely stubborn with prices and deals.
thewizardofaus··on Slack Says It's Filed to Go Public
Hate to say it but I believe this will be a easy short long term.
