The issue with long runs of 0x00 is related to "clock recovery".

> Some digital data streams, especially high-speed serial data streams (such as the raw stream of data from the magnetic head of a disk drive and serial communication networks such as Ethernet) are sent without an accompanying clock signal. The receiver generates a clock from an approximate frequency reference, and then phase-aligns the clock to the transitions in the data stream with a phase-locked loop (PLL).

> In order for this scheme to work, a data stream must transition frequently enough to correct for any drift in the PLL's oscillator. The limit for how long a clock-recovery unit can operate without a transition is known as its maximum consecutive identical digits (CID) specification.

It wouldn't have to want to kill everyone. As long as it doesn't want to not kill everyone, the side effects of it getting what it wants could be catastrophic.

> and we don't notice

How well do we understand what's going on inside ChatGPT? How well will we understand the next?

> and forget to shut it off

Earlier I would have argued that sufficiently advanced AI could prevent itself from being shut off via Things You Didn't Expect, and would instrumentally want to preserve its existence. But these days, people are giving ChatGPT not just internet access but even actively handing it control over various processes. At this rate, the first superhuman AI will face not an impermeable box but a million conveniently labeled levers!

thewakalix··on Generative AI could make search harder to trust
If it's a straightforward hash, that's easy to evade by modifying the output slightly (even programmatically).

If it's a perceptual hash, that's easy to _exploit_: just ask the AI to repeat something back to you, and it typically does so with few errors. Now you can mark anything you like as "AI-generated". (Compare to Schneier's take on SmartWater at https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2008/03/the_security_...).
