FULL-STACK DEVELOPER The Full-Stack Developer role is a critical position for us. We are seeking a developer with experience working extensively in both front-end and back-end software development, reporting to the Head of Engineering. Your initial focus will be on our core web experience, and may expand to mobile platforms as well.

You will be responsible for developing, testing and maintaining some of our most important and ambitious technology features, and you should have a proven track record of delivering well-engineered and tested software at scale.

PRODUCT DESIGNER

We are seeking a Product Designer with experience, passion and expertise in both visual and product design. You will collaborate closely with colleagues from the ecosystem of innovation labs, including the Lab of Forward Thinking, to drive innovation across global markets. About Guide:

We seek to fundamentally reshape the financial services industry, using software to enable millions of families to increase their savings rates, make better financial decisions and achieve retirement security – by applying cutting-edge behavioral finance, artificial intelligence and automation.

We were recently acquired by John Hancock (owned by Manulife – one of the largest financial services firms in the world) and operate as an independent San Francisco-based division, backed by the brand and resources of one of the leading financial services companies in the world.

We combine the best qualities of a startup – speed, continuous release cycles, audacious goals, relentless focus on user experience, and disruptive innovation – with the backing of an industry powerhouse, including ongoing support, competitive compensation and benefits, and an opportunity to continuously deploy software to improve the lives of customers across the country and the world, as part of a financial company with a massive global footprint.

theuri··on Singapore Rising: The Plot to Be the Next Big Tech Hub
There isn't as much home-grown tech innovation / spirit of disruption like you get in places that have a fundamentally irreverent culture that thrives on disrupting the norm and status quo - like parts of the US, China and Israel. It's all big gov, top-down initiatives in Singapore for now, until you get kids coming out of school there that feel entrepreneurship and risk taking is a better route than the safer and more respectable route of high-paying, stable government jobs.
theuri··on Singapore Rising: The Plot to Be the Next Big Tech Hub
I lived there for 3 years as an expat - it's one of the safest places in the world. I feel much safer in Singapore than I do in most parts of the US.
theuri··on New Dyno Types and Pricing Public Beta
I'm also a big fan of the professional tier / PX dyno pricing. Brings it down from previously $0.80/hour, which is much more pricey than $500/month with their new pricing.

Still pretty expensive compared to taking the DIY approach on AWS, but I appreciate the price break here.

I imagine their markup on top of AWS is still something crazy like 50% or more?

theuri··on $500k of Azure credit for YC startups
May be helpful to clarify/reword - sounded like $500k total from the headline, but is actually $500k per company. Sweet deal...
theuri··on The Grind vs. The Pivot
Agreed. If you keep writing posts like this, as a VC, you risk losing one of the most important differentiating points you have - your credibility and trust. People need to respect you as a thought leader, and not worry about reading blog posts with a "remove bias / advertising" filter in their heads.
theuri··on The Grind vs. The Pivot
I agree- this just reads like an ad. Wish there was a way to flag this as "reads like an ad", like they have on Wikipedia
theuri··on Plastc Card
Cool thanks - like the website and glad to hear you fixed it so quickly.
theuri··on Plastc Card
Looks interesting. Was thinking of waiting until a v2 just to let them work through security issues. Seems like the website itself has some front-end glitches - like the "About" page for example (this code visible: <?php if( extension_loaded(‘newrelic’) ) { echo newrelic_get_browser_timing_header(); } ?>)
theuri··on New Requests for Startups
Hey Max - Agreed - low cost index funds are a dime a dozen. Even "hot" startups like WealthFront / Betterment are a waste of money - you can spend a minute on the site, get their recommendation, hop over to Vanguard and carry it out yourself (and save thousands). Just send yourself a reminder to rebalance once a year and you're done. The biggest driver in building wealth, from our experience and that of working at Guide Financial, is using behavioral finance to automatically accumulate more assets over time - makes orders of magnitudes bigger impact than low costs/tax harvesting/etc
theuri··on [dead]
What is this thing?
theuri··on New RFS – Breakthrough Technologies
I can't help but feel there's a few major gaps on this list - helping reinvent financial services, and using technology to improve lives in developing economies
theuri··on Hacking Airline Lounges for Free Meals
It wouldn't be worth getting exposure to that level of radiation on a daily basis from the security process
theuri··on Coin
Curious to hear what the team at Wallaby thinks about this, and whether they're planning on competing directly or focusing squarely on rewards cards.
theuri··on Are You A Typing Hacker? Prove It
Sweet music!
theuri··on Ask PG: Is HN experiencing server problems?
Experiencing problems as well - potentially gateway related
theuri··on Zuck makes his first major investment in Panorama Education (YC S13)
Congrats to Zuck on backing progressive looking edtech ventures...
theuri··on Puma vs Phusion Passenger
Great analysis - I've been struggling with finding the right server to use for concurrency as I have very long-running requests to a third party API, and this looks like the right choice for us.
