thesurlydev··on Darklang Goes Open Source
I've been following Dark since its inception and found the idea inspiring. I'm happy about today's announcements and look forward to seeing what comes next.

On a personal note, I'm curious around the move to F# as the implementing language and wonder if there will be ports to other languages now that it's open source.

thesurlydev··on Claude Code SDK
Agree. That would be a great insight as well as what type of activities cause the explosion in spend.
thesurlydev··on Ask HN: Cursor or Windsurf?
I use the Windsurf Cascade plugin in JetBrains IDEs. My current flow is I rough-in the outline of what I want and have generally use the plugin to improve what I have by creating tests, performance improvements, or just making things more idiomatic. I need to invest time to add rules at both a global and project level which should make the overall experience event better.
thesurlydev··on Ask HN: What are good high-information density UIs (screenshots, apps, sites)?
Once upon a time I day traded and the go-to interface was TradingView[1]

thesurlydev··on The Cannae Problem
Where has this blog been all my life.
thesurlydev··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
My thoughts exactly and it makes me truly terrified.
thesurlydev··on They're Close to My Body: A Hagiography of Nine Inch Nails and Robin Finck (2020)
Great post. I've been a fan of NIN for over 30 years and no other band has had such a profound impact on my life. This is saying a lot because I've always been heavily into almost all genres. My biased opinion is that there's something for everyone somewhere in their discography because the music produced has varied quite a bit over the years. If you listen to them and like what you hear, they just announced a new tour.
thesurlydev··on Things we've learned about building products
I just want to say this blog is one of the best engineering/product blogs out there. I’ve been an avid reader for a while and always learn something. Very inspirational.
thesurlydev··on Show HN: Transform your codebase into a single Markdown doc for feeding into AI
I literally just wrote something similar called techdocs[1] in Rust and uses Claude to generate a README. It includes API and CLI.

thesurlydev··on JetBrains Fleet drops support for Kotlin Multiplatform
Couldn't tell you. The fact that JetBrains decided to make it a paid add-on beyond the normal IDE subscription cost turned me off.

I wonder if AI assistant will be deprecated once Junie is GA. Anyone know?

thesurlydev··on LibreOffice still kicking at 40, now with browser tricks and real-time collab
Every once in a while I'll try LibreOffice out but I can never get past the UI. I've also never seen it in use at a company which begs the question: who is using it?
thesurlydev··on WASM-Native Orchestration
Taking a quick look around on their website it seems you can have them host for you or self-host but absolutely requires k8s. If I'm wrong, point me to the doc that shows you how to self-host without k8s and I'll officially be excited.
thesurlydev··on JetBrains Fleet drops support for Kotlin Multiplatform
Yes. Absolutely. But with one caveat: JetBrains is clearly lagging behind in AI features and none of the 30+ LLM plugins come close to the killer feature of Codeium's Windsurf (Cascade). For this reason, I've been using both Windsurf and JetBrains in concert which is a pain but works for now.

I have high hopes for "Junie" but fear it's going to be a while before it's ready for prime time.

thesurlydev··on Some terminal frustrations
Shout out to atuin [1] which helps a lot with the "remembering syntax" problem especially if you're using several different commands over and over.

thesurlydev··on I Conditioned Myself to Fail
First, thanks for sharing.

Second, as I read this and other similar posts over the years I understand exactly what you mean. Although, in my case it's worse. I've built lots of things and left it in various degrees of completion before making it public. Sometimes, I go back and make improvements but still never launching.

thesurlydev··on All the data can be yours: reverse engineering APIs
As I read through these comments I'm reminded of recon techniques commonly used in bug bounties. Reverse proxies, decompiling APKs, parsing JS files to find endpoints, etc. I often went down rabbit holes in the recon phase and never found bugs but I had fun in the process so I considered it a win anyway.

I also implemented a bot mitigation system for a large international company so I got to see techniques used from the other side. Mobile phone farms and traffic from China was the most difficult to mitigate.

thesurlydev··on Hacking 700M Electronic Arts accounts
For anyone who's enjoyed reading this, there's plenty more to read about on the bug bounty platforms such as HackerOne's "Hacktivity": https://hackerone.com/hacktivity
thesurlydev··on M4 MacBook Pro
Thanks. That's it. Coincidentally, I found out what it was by looking at the actual press release where they had a screenshot of it too.
thesurlydev··on M4 MacBook Pro
My wallet is trembling.

On a side note, anyone know what database software was shown during the announcement?

thesurlydev··on Crossing the USA by Train
Thanks for sharing. I've always wanted to drive from Seattle to Boston on I-90 but the train looks fun too.
thesurlydev··on Audioscrape: Building in Rust When Everyone Said I Shouldn't
I'd love to hear how folks are deploying and hosting their Rust projects
thesurlydev··on Getting my daily news from a dot matrix printer
This is fantastic. I can't remember the last time I've interfaced with a dot matrix printer. It might have been in college getting a print out of Fortran programs. Thanks for sharing!
thesurlydev··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
Inspired by recent projects like Kamal and Sidekick which target VPS rather than k8s, I created a control plane that leverages Caddy, Cloudflare, Podman, and Hetzner to automate deploying apps.

The intent is to remove as many obstacles as possible for finishing my side projects and sharing them. Worst case scenario is it becomes another unfinished project but I’ve learned a lot along the way.

thesurlydev··on Launch HN: Haystack (YC S24) – Visualize and edit code on an infinite canvas
I like the idea but what would be next level would be to visualize a project and all its dependencies such as microservices, database, queue, etc.

Has there been any studies that prove that this infinite canvas mode is more productive than using a traditional IDE with heavy use of keyboard shortcuts, etc.

thesurlydev··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
I can't help but wonder if things would be different if Sam Altman wasn't allowed to come back to OpenAI. Instead, the safeguards are gone, challengers have left the company, and the bottom line is now the new priority. All in opposition to ushering in AI advancement with the caution and respect it deserves.
thesurlydev··on Reclaim the Stack
I was excited about this title until I read it's just another thing on top of Kubernetes. To me, Kubernetes is part of the problem. Can we reduce the complexity that Kubernetes brings and still have nice things?
thesurlydev··on Ask HN: How to designate a browser profile (window) via URL pattern?
Answering my question (partially). Found a great Mac-only app called "Velja" which does exactly what I wanted. It allows you to define rules based on URL patterns and "routes" to the appropriate browser window.

Now I just need the same thing for Linux.

thesurlydev··on Ask HN: Those who got layed off. Have you found a job?
No doubt it's rough and has been for a while. I left my cushy corporate software engineering gig last summer and had the intention of getting another job in the fall. That turned into getting hired in January, then laid off six weeks later along with 30% of the company.

After an intense and extremely hard job search for 5 months, I landed a job last month. In addition to the tough and time-intensive interview process, it was the first time in my 20+ career that the new job was at a lower compensation than the last.

It's easy to overlook that the job market as a whole is doing well but certain sectors, like tech, are down.

thesurlydev··on What do I want? (SWE Burnout)
Very relatable. Most of the times I got burned out was because I got "stuck" in the same project or company for too long. It's easy to become complacent especially if you're at a larger company and earning good money.

Some suggestions: Opt for smaller private companies, find a hobby that isn't sitting in front of a screen, and optimize your job search around the things that are important to you.
