Still better than Teams though.

Jitsi doesn't integrate with meeting rooms and calendars to my knowledge?

With Zoom we can have a setup where I just hit "join meeting" on a tablet in the meeting room and it'll join the meeting and pretty much just work.

Slack has a button you can use to add custom emojis. Mic drop.

IRC the protocol is pretty good still, specifically with the ircv3 additions. It's the clients that are janky still. I still remember when Slack ran a free IRC bridge for their chats...

This does work for some people, I'm not one of them. My mind will start to get bored, wander off and I get super sleepy when driving.

But I do have a friend who will just go on a drive with no destination to relax, sometimes taking like an hour a two to get to work on purpose (a 30 minute drive) just to wind down.

Your project README lists all of the bugs and race conditions in the application? Cool!
theshrike79··on RTK reports token savings, but our cost benchmarks disagree
You use caveman to save on tokens, I use it to make the agent shut up. We are not the same =)

When caveman was released, token efficiency was a lot more relevant. But in the time I've actually come to like its matter-of-fact and short way of responding. There are other similar ones, but caveman is familiar.

A Clapper[0] from the 80s "looked for a certain waveform", but definitely didn't "listen".

What the smart speakers and devices do with the keyword is closer to the clapper than an actual transcription.

Apple has a track record of doing stuff the difficult way (Maps) or doing it in a way that makes the end result worse than the competition (Siri) just to preserve user privacy. That's why they currently have my trust in these matters.

They're also not an ad company like the two other major players, Alphabet and Meta.

When someone comes up with smart glasses with a fully local setup, I'll be the first to buy.

But I'm not wearing something where the content might get viewed by a random person in Nigeria for "cataloging content".

They are the actual VPs of different fields, not professional actors.

It's hard to bring out "genuine emotions" when you're on the fifteenth take of a meticulously choreographed production. You just smile and focus on not fucking it up this time around.

theshrike79··on AirPods 5
That shape will sadly never stay in my ears. The Airpods Pro barely stay in, unless I eat, talk or sweat and they're less protruding from my ear.

Ads, Google is the world's largest ad company.

Internally they can do anything EXCEPT fuck with the ad revenue. If you get more ways to get data off users and ad views, good.

theshrike79··on AirPods 5
Because most people outside of the US find fake excitement off-putting and borderline creepy.

Which Chinese alternatives are available with similar quality in ANC, sound quality and fit? Like actual brands I can buy today, not the kind that has a brand name that was created by someone rolling their head on the keyboard and won't exist in 6 months.
theshrike79··on AirPods 5
Listening to music while out and about doesn't equate to "completely oblivious".

I've seen people with no earbuds be completely oblivious and almost walk into traffic...

Yea, it's like we have a super smart alien computer that can do anything but we need to spend massive amounts of time building fences and moats and write extremely detailed instructions so it doesn't run away and try to "help".

This is why I have a PROJECT.md in all my repos, which specifically reiterates that this is a greenfield single user project that never leaves my LAN.

It tends to relax some of the insane things LLMs tend to do.

theshrike79··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
> would not use a useful product

My problem isn't privacy or Meta spying on me. The product isn't useful.

My partner's algorithm gets more updates from my family than I do. Dunno why. "How did X do on the marathon?" they ask. And I go "X ran the what now when, huh?".

Same with all groups. Forums died, people moved to FB groups and now conversations are in an eternal September and impossible to follow.

theshrike79··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
Go with a Kobo. I switched to the Libra Colour and not going back. Physical buttons, sideloading without any trickery, first party support for alternative firmwares and frontends.

Also not owned by a man who can RENT VENICE for his wedding.

I also have an Xteink X3 and it's always with me. With a screen protector and/or case, I can just shove it into any pocket or put it on the back of my phone with the Qi2 magnets.

theshrike79··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Just a cursory search on my local used stuff marketplace says I can grab a Gen 3 ATV for 10€. A 1st gen 4k (which is the one I have) is about 100€ and still runs the latest tvOS.

It's more expensive than a 40€ Chromecast, but also SO MUCH BETTER.

theshrike79··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
But on the Apple TV you don't need to enable or disable anything. There are no ads, there has been no ads and I'm pretty sure there will be no ads.
theshrike79··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Apple TV is the best one. No ads, full OS updates for a long time.

People saying they can tell from the output are just huffing glue.

I remember the massive hubbub about the Mortal Engines movie specifically.

The only thing I remembered about the main character was that she had a scar on her face.

Fans were nitpicking every single strand of hair and I was like "You guys remember that, do you make notes when reading or what?". Apparently people visualize books so hard that they "see" the characters and remember them.

theshrike79··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
This is exactly how my brain works too, everything is related to everything.

A specific set of words can trigger a memory of a song for example.

There's a lot of "I know it when I see it" kind of things, I need to find one link in the path to the relevant thing to get there.

theshrike79··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
My brain is like a vector database, it stores the "feelings" of information, not the actual information - if that makes sense?

I can make lightning fast connections in my head when something happens, like when something breaks in production, I see the symptoms and the vectors just connect from effect to the cause.

Can I explain to others why and how I know where the problem is? Nope. ...Or yes, but it'll take a long time for me to follow the feeling-vectors and put them into words I can actually communicate to other people.

For actual people and characters in books I also retain the shape and ...something about them, but I couldn't explain how most people in my life look like to a sketch artist.

When I read a book, I kinda retain the "feeling" of the characters and maybe one or two visual traits. I can read thousands of pages of a character's adventures and I can maybe tell you their general body type and clothing - if they have an "uniform" they tend to wear.

I've read all 5 books (over 5000 pages) of The Stormlight Archive and I couldn't tell you what Kaladin (the main character) looks like. I have no visual recollection of his hair colour, eye colour, skin tone or body type.

It always baffled me when a movie adaptation of a book came out and people were really upset that the characters looked wrong. And I was just "... you remember what the people in books look like??". It turns out they do.

Oh, and DEFINITELY no voice in my head. I'd get myself committed if I had someone talking to me in my brain

theshrike79··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
The best way I can describe is that my brain is a vector database. Stuff is linked to other stuff.

There is no visual component to any of it, it's just "feels" as the kids say.

I couldn't imagine any of my family's faces in my head even if my life depended on it. I'm not face blind, my brain just doesn't work like that.

I also have zero internal monologue. I can "talk" in my head, but it's just me, there's no discussion or multiple participants and none of it is unprompted. I'm pretty sure I'd have myself committed if I started hearing random voices or music in my head unprompted...
