Personally I spend a lot of time staring at code thinking “wtf was this person thinking when they did this…I know there was a reason but..what was it” (doubly so if I’m the one who wrote it). So I think you’re right, unless there’s a key binding to read minds too :)
Honestly I’m surprised that they cant just be remotely disabled. I’m not advocating for this feature by the way. I’m just surprised that it’s not a thing.
I also don’t think the technology is affordable enough. I had a couple of friends who were big into second life and always tried to get me to join in and I did but my machine was so sloooooooow and my connection was so choppy that it wasn’t fun. Now mind you I had the same experience with Napster - it took me 4 hours to download one song and I said to myself man this stuff will neeeeeever take off and I was so wrong about that it’s almost funny. But millions of people having access to high end equipment to go online and socialize just seems so far from realistic to me. But as I mentioned in another comment on this thread I was wrong about basically everything with regard to the modern internet so there’s a strong chance I’ll be wrong on that too!
Way way back I wrote a small script for my blackberry that updated a page on my university account with my rough location. My wife was like that’s so creepy no one will ever want that. Then four square happened. Then everything else happened. And a short while later a guy I knew showed up with his iPhone and was showing it to me. I was like wow what a dinky little device but hey at least it’s cool looking. Then iPhones became the thing to have. And also around that time I recall people talking about Facebook and I was like well MySpace is already a think who’s ever going to use this random site. And here we are today. So I’m most certainly not going to say meta verse won’t take off. I’ve been wrong about most things (bitcoin, I’m looking at you buddy).
I personally don’t see a benefit to it. I don’t want to have to wear AR goggles to attend a three hour meeting. And I don’t want to have to physically move to buy things on an online store other than just moving my mouse or scrolling.
But there’s a lot of potential there just from the gizmo aspect of it all. And I’m sure plenty of folks will see tons of value in it. If nothing else, pornhub will make a killing.
And there’s the newest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. People really love the vr mode and the videos I’ve seen (I’ve never played it) already look pretty darn realistic and engaging.
That’s one thing that I am so curious about. I’m just not sure what problems Facebook engineers have to deal with. I hear all these stories about the hiring process and people being asked to implement wildcard regex matching or something. The projects I work on are like “here’s seventy five different databases go figure out how to individualize the members from these datasets oh and data x, y, and z must be anonymized before it’s commingled.”
My wife has a chronic, expensive, difficult to manage, and unpredictable health condition. Having to leave her to be in an office when I’ve been doing great work from home is a show stopper for me. And I’m always upfront about that with employers, I get some companies have an on-prem mentality and I’m respectful of that. But it doesn’t work for me, so I’m not trying to waste their time or mine. And my current employer while I regularly complain about the logistics of working in a gigantic enterprise has been very respectful of our situation and hasn’t once ever made me feel like I’m slowing down or underperforming because of it. So long as I keep making the company money and they keep paying me, neither of us cares where the other sits.
100% agree. Before my current job I worked with tons of remote teams and it was great. Even now, the majority of my interactions are with people on the west coast or offshore teams in India. My boss is in the mid west and his boss is in the south east. And so far we’re doing great.
I'm not arguing that no one should focus on space and I'm certainly not arguing that no one should focus on science..it's the opposite in fact. It just seems to me that going to space is sort of a solved problem, and that now we're just trying to figure out how to do it a little bit better and in a way that generates revenue. But since there are problems that remain unsolved, you'd think that people who are bright enough to tackle admittedly difficult problems like going to space better than we already do would want to tackle really hard problems, rather than just sort of iterating on an existing design.
Right now we have a new space race, it's just between companies instead of countries.
I know that going into space is sexy and nerdy and cool and that it’s a difficult problem. What I don’t get is why so many people think about going to space and spend so much money on it when there are people in the US who drink water that catches on fire..and people elsewhere who don’t have access to water at all. Seems like we should work on the truly hard problems rather than the ones that are basically “just go up, really fast”
I was on a call just yesterday about how we should consider moving from one solution to another simply because the new one 'uses graphql which is so much easier and so much more powerful'
Is it me being jaded or is a billion or two dollars not really that much money anymore? I mean sure, if someone were to give me a billion dollars I'd be excited (pending dealing with taxes etc). But I mean..theres what a couple thousand people with personal fortunes that could buy the entire deposit several times over, and even more companies that could do it...maybe it'd be a great windfall to the local economy? But if Maine is anything like North Carolina then the majority of the money will get earmarked for future infrastructure projects and then get slowly siphoned off by the politicians over a few years so it won't really matter.
superquadruple
su·perquadru·ple
a quadrilateral consisting of four lines or poles and six equal circles corresponding to a point
"a pair of triangles with a superquadruple of radius"
The guy should pivot in place, bend at the knees, grab the handles, stand, and then pivot in place. It’s like people decided to invent a power suit because they forgot how to use their feet.
I dunno most contractors like to get paid. I’m not sure but the Trump company does sort of have a history of not paying workers. I’m not arguing whether or not they should’ve. But it is kind of a _thing_
So you know in the Hunger Games when the guy was like “what if just once no one watched?” .. what if there were a truly massive protest (millions of people) who just said fuck it and didn’t pay their taxes and instead wrote in that they demand proper tax reform
Looking at the last code I wrote earlier today and the comments I have things like “this object contains active member records” because the object itself has a cryptic name that’s basically a GUID. Now I’m questioning would it be better to just save some human readable object name and store the object inside the friendly object
I know nothing about hardware, basically. Do Apple’s new GPU cores come close to the capabilities of discrete GPUs like what are used for gaming/scientific applications? Or are those cards a whole different thing?
The only thing that bothers me with my various Airs-pod is that they sometimes want to connect to other devices (or, more accurately, other devices want to connect to them)..for example I'll be on a call with my Airpods Max connected to my phone, and I'll lean a little too close to my desk and this little dialog pops up on my iPad wanting to connect to them...or I'll move my phone a little bit and a little dialog pops up asking if it should connect to my home pod...but it's a very minor annoyance that is almost comical now.
they _could_ project sound outward, using beam forming, such that the sound ricochets off of the walls and other surrounding objects and is directed onto the bones behind your ear. I'm not saying that would work, but it's an option!
I work with this guy who’s sort of an “automation” guy. He’s responsible for automating or at least partially automatic really complex processes. I’ve seen the guy automate away whole departments. Generally speaking my point is that he delivers huge value for the company. And a few months ago his supervisor emailed me asking if I could send in recommendation for him as he was up for a promotion, so I created quite a detailed list of all the things we’ve worked on and how they drove substantial business value. And I fully expected this guy to get promoted…and he didn’t. The board rejected his promotion.
My theory is that he’s too valuable where he is, and that they don’t want to move him elsewhere. But he just got an offer down the road somewhere else and will be putting in his notice next week.
I don’t really understand the economy. Here’s why: it’s entirely artificial. We, humans, make the rules. We control the input and if we don’t like the output we can just change that too. The market doesn’t actually exist. It’s just pieces of paper and bits on computers. A car can malfunction because it wasn’t built properly or because something breaks. A human can get sick because it gets damaged somehow. But the economy is a concept. So if we think houses are going to suddenly become worthless it’s because we think we’re going to, as a society, stop seeing value in houses…it’s not like something about houses makes them less valuable. They don’t have value in the first place except because we want them to. So…is it because banks have extracted all of the value out of other things? Banks want more money, so they suddenly say houses have no value and because of that they can beg for and receive money from the government? None of it is real…it can’t actually stop working.
If you don’t mind my asking, what would you say you spend most of your time doing in a week? For me it’s a lot of requirements gathering and sketching things out then developers go off and build it. For example next week I’ll be working with a few other architects on some identity resolution projects. But we’ll just design the system, the engineers will take our specs and go off and build it.
