therusskiy··on Show HN: IngestAI – NoCode ChatGPT-bot creator from your knowledge base in Slack
I see a Notion example in Langchain, I assume you guys did something similar. Do you know if there is maximum size of documents that it supports?
therusskiy··on Show HN: IngestAI – NoCode ChatGPT-bot creator from your knowledge base in Slack
First time I hear about it, but just checked it out - seems pretty cool, but you still need to feed some model into it right? Many examples seem to use OpenAI.

I see a bunch of apps using LLMs popping out like mushrooms in a forest, but how do you fine-tune it for your dataset? The biggest (GPT-3 davinci) model on OpenAI is not available for fine-tuning.

therusskiy··on Show HN: IngestAI – NoCode ChatGPT-bot creator from your knowledge base in Slack
Would be cool to know some technical details, like are you fine-tuning GPT-3 on Open AI or built something yourself on top of an open source pretrained model?
therusskiy··on Konstantin Tsiolkovsky
In USSR my grandfather's parents were stripped of everything they had and sent to Siberia with nothing but the cloth they were wearing.

Skip a few years, my grandfather was the youngest doctor of science (in Russia that's next level from PhD) in his city in the field of Nuclear Physics and during his life was a dean in 3 different universities and a head of another one.

My 2nd grandfather was born in a village and had to tend for his younger sisters because his two older brothers were fighting in WW2 (and died there).

Skip a few years and he taught himself engineering and later became a head of a department in a big spaceship construction factory that employeed 10s of thousands of people, was doing research, travelled whole of soviet union overseeing testing of spaceship componponents.

Both died in poverty a few years ago: doing any government jobs in Russia is extremely unrewarding if you are an honest man.

(and here I am doing stupid crap in Javascript and Ruby earning 50 times what they did).

therusskiy··on Swiss to vote on preventing cashless society, pressure group says
As a Russian last year I learned that any money in a bank are not really yours.

Russian government banned withdrawing USD/EUR from ATMs while Mastercard and Visa banned using their cards.

Your balanace ended up being a number in the app.

Cashless - no thanks.

therusskiy··on US companies are producing heat pumps that work below -20F
Most air conditioners I encountered (as a person from a cold country) had this option. The Samsung one I have works from -15C (which is really not that cold, but still). Is this the same technology just for even colder tempreratures?
therusskiy··on US companies are producing heat pumps that work below -20F
I am lost.

Are heat pumps the same thing as split air conditioners that can heat air?

therusskiy··on The antimicrobial resistance crisis needs action now
My wife has just got better from a case of pneumonia that developed rapidly within several hours. If not for antibiotics...

We are back to medieval times if antibiotics stop working.

therusskiy··on Show HN: Domain Name Search with AI
it's actually possible to download a list of all domains in .com TLD. Google for how to download domains from ICANN. I think it takes like a day to your request approved.
therusskiy··on Apple Music Sing
Spotify released this feature to some users this summer: https://sea.mashable.com/entertainment/20715/spotifys-new-ka...

Though I have no idea how to get into this beta test.

This is a killer feature for me as I am trying to learn to sing.

There are some services online that use AI to split tracks into instruments and vocals that do hell of a job, but trying to combine them with written lyrics again is a pretty painful experience.

therusskiy··on Mozilla revenue 2021 increases 20%
I want to love Mozilla and Firefox as it promotes diversity and standards for the web, but god do I hate Mozilla's marketing.

It's completely outrage driven and feeds on fearmongering: "google bad, we good, give us money".

Having spoken to people who work at Mozilla they say the management is pretty toxic which makes me think they are being hypocrites with their message.

therusskiy··on Why are male testosterone levels falling?
Testosterone increases desire to maintain high social status.

If that can be achieved through aggression - a person going to do just that, if that is achieved through team play and compassion, the person would do it instead.

As Robert Sapolsky said, it is sad that in our society aggessive behaviour is the one that leads to success.

therusskiy··on Zebras of all stripes repel biting flies at close range
Zebra stripes are basically an adversarial pattern for Neural Net in a fly's brain.
therusskiy··on Is Turbopack really 10x faster than Vite?
Try deploying NextJS yourself over multiple instances, you are soon going to learn that cache NextJS provides isn't shared across them via something like Redis (I think it's mostly shared on Vercel, but I don't know how they do it).

Aside performance, this has consequences because of their stale-while-revalidate technique for static pages in incremental regeneration. If cache becomes obsolete on 1 instance and it's revalidate on the next request, it's not revalidated on other instances, so users accessing them are going to see stale data until that instance itself does revalidation. Having even a percentage of pages showing stale data can be painful for certain scenarios.

NextJS users been asking for more flexiable caching for some time.

I think it's a pretty good example.

As for forking it, how many companies have enough resources and are willing to go that distance?

therusskiy··on Is Turbopack really 10x faster than Vite?
Next being owned by Vercel has a perverse incentice to push for features that are good for Vercel, like fast build times and very specific caching strategies, not for the features that developers actually want.
therusskiy··on Remote work has been a boon for night owls
I remember when I was younger I would often work until 7am because due to startups nature the work includes a lot of communication with founders, and I myself used to live in Russia, while the startups were in San Francisco / Los Angeles.

Today, If I stay until 6am the next day I am almost guaranteed to have a headache and be worthless, but working in the evenings is still my prime time. My colleagues often tell me "dude, it's 11pm where you are at, go to sleep", but at this point that's my 2nd nature.

Still, many people in the same company manage to work the "normal" 8am-6pm days, so I guess to each their own.

therusskiy··on Princeton lab simulates nuclear war (2019)
They were released by Levada, it's now been some time that they are being influenced by Kremlin.

None of my friends / relatives / acquintances supports this war (only my GF's mother). That is a piss-poor statistic, but the sad truth is that there simply cannot be any reliable sociology in a country where saying "no to war" leads to criminal prosecution.

I think it's also crucial, that from people who "support this war", most support the image they see on TV, not the real-world atrocities. Most of people who support this war think they are fighting "battalions of NATO soldiers from Poland" and a small group of nazis who threaten Ukraininan soldiers with death if they don't go into battle. For majority it's impossible to fathom fighting with brotherly Ukrainians.

therusskiy··on Princeton lab simulates nuclear war (2019)
It's ridiculously easy to influence people through propaganda.

Like you, for example, or majority of "west" for that matter, has completely believed that "70%" number that was released by Russian government.

therusskiy··on Archaeologists hail ‘dream discovery’ as sarcophagus is unearthed near Cairo

therusskiy··on What “diversity and inclusion” means at Microsoft
I find it puzzling why people are split by their skin color rather than their country of origin.

There are only marginal differences between a white and a black person born in US, while myself, being a white male born in Russia, cultural experiences and background have barely anything in common with a white person born in US except for the color of my skin.

The same applies for a black guy from US and a black guy from Nigeria or something.

Other people have already brought it up, but Asian is such a vague term as well. There are Asians from 1st world Asian countries (Japan, South Korea, Singapore) and from 3rd world countries (Vietnam and etc).

By diversity logic you really should have quotas for every flavor of color and birth, but you can imagine it's going to lead to madness, so people just choose an easy way out and do this as a PR stunt.

therusskiy··on Apple removed all VK and Mail.ru applications from the App Store
I am Russian, so I am going to explain the way I and my friends and relatives that I speak to think about Ukrainians.

We consider Ukrainians brothers in the best way possible. We don't care what language you speak, but it feels especially warm when we hear that you can speak Russian as well. Like you are speaking to a relative.

The government propaganda is trying hard to convince Russian population that they are fighting a small group of Nazis who took over government and against NATO mercenaries, not Ukrainians, because they know Russians don't want to fight them.

It may be hard for you to accept, given what's happening, but this is the bullshit that propaganda made some people believe.

I am telling you this as a person, whose girlfriend has heated arguments with her grandmother over a phone every week. It goes something like this:

"grandma! There are no mercenaries! They are fighting Ukranian military! Destroying cities! Where would they find so many mercenaries??? I don't care what you saw on TV! ... ".

The same thing every time.

There are probably ~3-5% of people who are fucked in the head and hate Ukranians, but most people do not.

I listen to Russian propanganda a couple times per month for educational purposes :-)

Believe me, that is not it.

You are likely right here though, that Donetsk and Lugansk would have likely became a part of Russia. I don't think anything would change for them, however, since these areas are already largely pro-Russian and were already controlled by military affiliated with Russia.

I expect after this war they are going to reconsider how much they want to be in Russia, because after promising to protect them, Putin sent all their young men to war.

therusskiy··on Apple removed all VK and Mail.ru applications from the App Store
I am not talking about Slavic culture, I am talking about USSR culture.

In my limited experience there's more in common between Russia and Ukraine / Georgia / Kazakhstan than between Russia and Poland / Czech / Croatia etc, latter being Slavs.

USSR did a lot of work to unify culture of its states.

In my personal experience I can never tell if someone is from Ukraine or Belarus until they tell me. I can tell that someone is from EU (including Slavs) just by looking at their back 20 meters away.

therusskiy··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
Putin treats Russians as his property, but money from gas goes directly into his and his friend's pockets. His friends he listens to.

He also uses these money to arm police to keep population at bay.

There's also some weird pride he takes in having gas.

May be something else is in play here, but I don't think how this can be benefitial to his cause.

therusskiy··on Apple removed all VK and Mail.ru applications from the App Store
It may be semantics, but even by law a murder is different based on person's motivation.

If John kills Jane because she is black it is different than killing her by reckless driving. In this war civilians are getting killed because of disregard for human lifes while trying to kill the military, not intentionally because of the group they belong to.

I am not trying to say they are not killing people, it's the intention that I am questining. How can it be a genocide of Ukranians if Putin is killing a bunch of Russians that live there as well? And if there are many Ukranians in Russia's military doing the same thing.

therusskiy··on Apple removed all VK and Mail.ru applications from the App Store
The official reason was not changing government, it's "denazification and demilitarization".

As for "not a real country", there's an opinion that I think has some truth to it, that Ukraine, Russia as well as other states were all forged in the flame of USSR. As I visit ex-USSR states they are very similar, like different flavors of the same country. National cloth and parts of language is all that is left.

This way there's not much need to change Ukraine to be like Russia, all of us already have the USSR culture.
