therockhead··on How M1 Macs feel faster than Intel models: it’s about QoS
I'm seeing a big different when compiling our project, with the M1 Macbook Pro beating the iMac Pro when building our projects (23min vs 38 mins).

Is it all CPU though, or is building ARM artefacts less resource intensive than bulding ones for Intel ?

therockhead··on gRPC benchmark results
The difference in avg memory for first and second is substantial, 115.41 MiB Java vs 4.15 MiB Rust.
therockhead··on WhatsApp whitepaper removed sentence about never having access to private keys
> I’ve mentioned on here before about a conversation i had on what’s app and was presented with ads for the topic in Facebook right after

I have heard something similar to this but just assumed it was a coincidence. Has this every been proven with verified results ?

therockhead··on Bevy: A data-driven game engine and app framework built in Rust
Same here.
therockhead··on Storage Matters: Why Xbox and Playstation SSDs Usher in a New Era of Gaming
Yeah, I still remember playing Tekken for the first time at my friends house, which was over 25 years ago. It was truly jaw dropping for the time.
therockhead··on Storage Matters: Why Xbox and Playstation SSDs Usher in a New Era of Gaming
Sony marketed the device to an older generation e.g they had PlayStation demo station in night clubs. Until Sony entered the gaming market, consoles were largely considered a children toy.
therockhead··on Storage Matters: Why Xbox and Playstation SSDs Usher in a New Era of Gaming
I think the demo disks with the PS magazines are often overlooked as well.
therockhead··on Educated Guesses on Software Transitioning to macOS on ARM
I don’t see how that helps apps not in the App Store, as bitcode need to changed to a platform specific type .... unless this was done on the fly on the host platform.
therockhead··on macOS Catalina 10.15.5
"machines" ;)
therockhead··on macOS Catalina 10.15.5
I have Catalina on a iMac Pro, a 16inch and 15 MacBook pro and for what it worth have hit zero issues.
therockhead··on How we use Rust in our mobile SDK
Is bitcode only required for watchOS and tvOS ?
therockhead··on How Bird Laid Off 406 People in Two Minutes via Zoom
Yeah, something is really wrong here.
therockhead··on Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust
It helps if your think gardener instead of janitor.
therockhead··on Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust
> By choosing rust you will suffer a great deal of the limitations of it's poor, not production ready, ecosystem.

Why do you think that? Seems like Rust is a great choice for this type of high performance work.

therockhead··on Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust
The article mentioned that they have already used Rust successfully in house, so when you consider that Rust is inherently safer than C++, it seems like they picked the right language.
therockhead··on Building all of our new mobile apps using React Native
Does RN work on macOS ?
therockhead··on Actix project postmortem
Yes.
therockhead··on Actix Web: Optimization Amongst Optimizations
Actix-Web 2.0 was released over the Christmas and with Rust's new async api, the ergonomics of the framework have vastly improved. So not only is it really fast but now much easier to use compared to version 1.
therockhead··on IBM Stops Server Side Swift Framework Development
I think it will eat into the C++ market share on mobile, which is a common strategy for larger apps that need to share business logic with native UI.
therockhead··on Qt Binding for Go with Support Desktop, Mobile and Embeddable
I believe the parent post is correct and mechanism used to link effects the licence.
therockhead··on An Interview with Jose Valim, Creator of Elixir
Yeah, it looks exciting.
therockhead··on Apple's list of 235 apps that are incompatible with macOS Catalina
Calling someone cheap is not helpful in discussions like this, and really undermine your arguments.
therockhead··on Is Rust a good choice for web services?
I’m curious, what library do you use to handle the REST requests ?
therockhead··on Which companies are using Erlang, and why?
Elixirforums have reported year on years increased traffic, so I’m surprised to hear that.
therockhead··on Go 1.13 Release Notes
Do you include web development in that ?
therockhead··on Ask HN: Compiled Web App
I know you said Rust was too unfamiliar but if you want the efficiency of C++ but in a safe language this is where I would start (and what I’m currently learning). For what it’s worth, the Rust web framework Actix has some of the best performance numbers on techempower.
therockhead··on Async-std: an async port of the Rust standard library
>C++ on Windows makes heavy use of reference counting (which is a GC algorithm from CS point of view), via COM/UWP.

Not sure if Ref counting is a good example here, as there is no runtime monitoring the object graph hierarchy and of course Rust it’s self uses ref counting in many situations.

therockhead··on The not so hidden cost of sharing code between iOS and Android
Indeed they have. What’s missing in some of the discussion here is the size of the application. For large applications like Office, a shared code base is often the correct strategy.
therockhead··on The not so hidden cost of sharing code between iOS and Android
>On iOS the situation has gotten worse in that the interface between Swift and C++ has to go through C, so if you are using C++ you need a special interface layer, which is almost like the JNI situation on Android.

I’m curious why you don’t add an Objective c layer for C++ interoperability, I’ve done this in the past and it works a great.
