therealx··on A nameless hiker and the case the internet can’t crack
The whole thing really reads as mental illness to me. I bet he had it under control for the most part, but things worsened as the trip went on.

One of the biggest reasons for quitting mental illness drugs is due to the feeling that everything is "OK", and they don't need them anymore.

This almost universally false, and as the drugs leave their system, things get progressivelly worse over time. The story fits this timeline really well.

therealx··on Are we losing our ability to remember?
I used to think I was losing my ability to remember things due to the amount of information I was taking in. I no longer think this is true and was simply my own worry.

I do review certain things I want to remember in my downtime, but I don't think that is somehow inherently changing some larger picture like my information consumption.

Semi-related, do you guys tend to get headaches after long information binges?

therealx··on Google Antitrust Notes
That's sad to hear. I'm so used to auto scrolling down to hit the real results.
therealx··on Quibi Is Shutting Down
I read it as "this feature is premium specifically because it is not free." Businesses are under no obligation to offer basic services for free, even if they did in the past. If this is good for business is different, but YouTube must have had good reason to push all those features to paid. It doesn't matter how much bandwidth is being used, its to block people from using it as a streaming music for free.
therealx··on Quibi Is Shutting Down
Sounds like .us needs to be handled like .com was before those services even existed - either fake info or a free/cheap Voip line.
therealx··on Quibi Is Shutting Down
I fully agree, but I wonder what it will take to start this trend. Do any big sites allow you to pay for no tracking/not being the product?
therealx··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
Its such a weird thing. After a while, you begin to wonder if you just learned to work around it. I too bad a similar experience, just s/snowboad/motorcycle/.
therealx··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
No, that's local, not general anesthesia.
therealx··on Welcome to the Old Internet Again
You aren't alone. My Mom went full on conspiracy with FB. She was always a little nutty, but its let her take it to a new level. I once told her "You better not make me watch you die over this (antivaxx/antidoctor)"
therealx··on Welcome to the Old Internet Again
I think the line in the sand that a lot of people draw is when the web went from requiring skills to access vs being made easy for most people.
therealx··on Welcome to the Old Internet Again
I think IRC still has in depth communication is due to the fact that there is a barrier to joining. All these apps are trying to be easy, without realizing there's sometimes something good with being hard.
therealx··on Tinnitus Treatment from Neuromod
If that's true, you can almost guarantee a cottage industry of doctors writing off label scripts.
therealx··on He Married a Sociopath: Me
Sociopathic people can be very functional. The label simply has to do with your internal feelings and responses. How you handle real life is up to you.

Most people that get these labels don't want go feel special. In fact, most are at their wits end and just want things to get better. It's usually the opposite of what you think - these people are often happy and surprised they are not alone.

The label helps avoid a lot of explanation when moving from provider to provider. Any provider worth their salt will see the person as a multi dimensional human.

It's very privileged of you go assume it has anything to do with vanity or a desire to be unique.

(Sorry for the formatting, on mobile)

therealx··on He Married a Sociopath: Me
This happened to me, but I've never thought of myself as sociopathic. Rather, I grew up in a situation that required me to repress my feelings, and MDMA was a gateway to breaking down the giant wall I had, unknowingly, built up.
therealx··on Dropbox Converts to Permanent WFH
These are truly the worst. I remember management being very upset when they switched from hipchat to slack as they no longer had such fine grain controls over visibility. Its somewhat inconceivable to me that, by now, they haven't realized it will only backfire.
therealx··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
It's used as a modern indentured servitude. I think you said it well, they love the "traditional way", which includes dangling someones life above their heads to get them to work in situations where other people wouldn't put up with it.

To me, it's the legal version of having your passport stolen for ransom in a third world country.

therealx··on Tesla hacker reveals what driver-facing camera is looking for
Get a sleep study done! You may be surprised, and even without insurance, the at home sleep studies aren't too pricey (pro tip, you can usually plug in the unit to your computer and dumb a copy of the raw data before you return it to your dr)
therealx··on US college enrollments are falling, except for graduate degrees
I remember being in High School and they asked who was going to college. I didn't raise my hand and was then publicly put on the spot to explain why not. Worked out okay for me, but I respect both paths.
therealx··on DigitalOcean's Hacktoberfest Is Hurting Open Source
I once thought about making a script that automated git actions which would show you as active, but not actually do anything. Turns out theres too much real work to do to make it!
therealx··on Amazon One – Palm recognition for Amazon Go
I minorly burned my finger on a toaster oven below my fingerprint line and still had to reregister my finger due to skin growth.
therealx··on YouTube is shutting down crowdsourced captions
It does a better job than the color shifting when preparing for bed.
therealx··on Judge temporarily blocks U.S. ban on TikTok downloads from U.S. app stores
I agree, and we need something that's equal across the board which will try to handle domestic companies doing things like Facebooks mood experiments.
therealx··on Judge temporarily blocks U.S. ban on TikTok downloads from U.S. app stores
The problem is they could pull a Facebook and show certain content to change peoples moods intentionally. It's already proven possible. That said, I'm all for legislation against all social media companies.
therealx··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
True, but anyone mildly determined can get a two year old device, 0day the baseband, and have full access. I remember old iOS exploits that gave access to the full baseband as well.
therealx··on Why some people suffer from a stutter
Same! Bad stutter in early elementary school, but fine later after some speech therapy. Mine was most likely a sign of the ADHD to come, as well as a dash of my tourettes.
therealx··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
The addon store for Chrome is close in 2021 though, so thats kind of moot. I'm sure some will convert to other payment methods, but I think it's rare.
therealx··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
I agree with most of this, however I think graphic design and some marketing is still very important. In fact, now more than ever they need that. Engineering should still be the primary focus, though.
therealx··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
I agree, I dont think this CEO is special. His argument is flawed on that premise alone. I think they should pull an MS and promote the CIO or a lead engineer.
therealx··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
Yes, it's common, but usually theres enough other board members to vote him/her off, if need be.
therealx··on How to say no, for the people pleaser who always says yes
Very well put. I feel this is hard to convey to someone, even though it's plainly obvious when they are deep in it. You have to have those moments of really wondering what is important to get there.
