therealx··on FireEye Shares Details of Recent Cyber Attack
I salivate at the potential of seeing the industry turned on it's head and these tools being leaked. I know there are great firms out there, but a lot are snake oil nonsense.
therealx··on FireEye Shares Details of Recent Cyber Attack
I disagree. Anyone with minor observation can get behind a wheel and drive. Will they do it well? No (same with a computer) Is it legal? No, but thats because we all decided that as a group. The danger is different, but I think it's still an interesting analogy.

I think we need to all realize that most people aren't cut out for computer science, per se, but most people are cut out to learn to responsibly use a computer.

therealx··on Singapore approves lab-grown 'chicken' meat
I think you are referencing two different things. Expecting vegitarian meals to be the default wont happen for a long time. People like meat for a lot of reasons.

However, lots of wonderful resturants and chefs are creating vegitarian and vegan food that in no way immitates meat based food.

I also think, though, that if we can create lab grown meat that is identical to meat but doesn't involve suffering or enviornmental harm, that's a win. Most vegans I have polled would eat it, as long as their stomach could handle it.

Do we somehow fail the dumb accountant or 80 year gma with cars because they can't just get in and drive without learning how to drive?
therealx··on FireEye Shares Details of Recent Cyber Attack
I don't think they would be publishing this if they didn't think that the tools will stay secret. They are getting ahead of it.

It depends on how it happened, too. If it was a nation state deal and no more details come forth, I vote no. If this is a finphisher type hack and they get humiliated and db/source dumped, then yes.

I hope so. Between the cia, russia, nsa, and other private company dumps, it's been a fun time to be in the industry. I can't find these yet anywhere.
therealx··on Mushrooms Can Eat Plastic, Petroleum and CO2 (2018)
Thank you for inadvertinely informing me that they are illegal in LA :).
therealx··on Zero-click, wormable, cross-platform remote code execution in Microsoft Teams
I came here hoping for an answer on this and got none.
therealx··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
Sadly, some will look for other open wireless netorks and connect. In the future, I'm sure all will have a 5g connection.
therealx··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
To make matters worse, the SmartTV sold someone in my family just had the SmartTV apps (netflix, etc) taken forcefully off the device because they no longer wished to keep it up to date.
therealx··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
Displays - TVs without the tuner, are very pssibly to buy if you don't mind it beint shipped to you. The sector is a live and well, just not targeted to consumers.
therealx··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
The sales world you are looking for is a "panel", think something that goes on the wall at a convention center, or as a menu. They very muxh exist, and the stats are no B.S>
therealx··on Colombia is considering legalizing its cocaine industry
Great point. It shouldn't really matter much if some formerlly gray-market figures get rich as long as things go toward a better model.
therealx··on Mushrooms Can Eat Plastic, Petroleum and CO2 (2018)
Electric leaf blowers are a lot quieter, as well.
therealx··on Self-Hosting Still Pays
Yesh, I'm so tired of the idea that AWS doesn't involve the same management overhead as any other server. It's so far removed from the truth that I wonder if they are shills.
therealx··on Self-Hosting Still Pays
I agree with you. As counterpoint, I was embarassed for our profession when something like 70% of people in the industry said they were confused with the syntax for httpd.conf
therealx··on Self-Hosting Still Pays
I agree with you, but I can't find a good way to communicate this to the other camp. I wonder if you can't clearly see this without having been a "sysadmin" long before "devops" was a title.
therealx··on Self-Hosting Still Pays
A lot of businesses aren't growing at breakneck speeds, and with modern cpu/ram setups, are often massively underprovisioned. A very big car rental company you'd know the name of was being run on four servers, and they were only upgraded at EOL (if something broke, Dell had same day or next day service)
therealx··on How to buy gifts that people actually want
Oh, no, sorry, I'm only interested in testing for health reasons. It would indeed be fairly useless for genology except I guess to get a real picture of your overall heritage.
therealx··on How to buy gifts that people actually want
Ugh, I have almost the same issue. I think I'll regift it to someone who understands but doesnt care. Have you looked into the genetic squencing offered at education places/third party businesses? They are a little more expensive (starting at $500, I think.)
therealx··on How to buy gifts that people actually want
Right! As an adult, I'm sure into the socks that I didn't want when I was younger.
therealx··on How to buy gifts that people actually want
Truth, including gift cards for things you already use. Already pay for spotify? Ask for a year gift card. It makes the other party happy and you can do something else with the money.
therealx··on Tony Hsieh has died
It's crazy people don't want to hear that this could possibly be true. HMU on my email - we might know each other :)
therealx··on Tony Hsieh has died
Best I can do is this personal story: I, for reasons unimportant to the topic, knew personally people from all walks of Tony's life.

I've would have a drink with his personal cleaning lady when she was done for theday, and drank more than one with Tony himself late into the night at Kareoke in his personal Airstream park. Many of my friends worked in all departments at Zappos, as well.

When the drinks were mostly finished, and the clock was past 3am, the #1 rumor would be of his drug use. At first I thought it was standard rumors due to his laid back nature and stature (and maybe confated with the fact that he smoked weed legally.)

However, after an interpersonal issue, one of the people with access to his private life pulled me aside and showed me a series of photos he had taken in Tony's place prior to anyone cleaning it up.

Let's just say Ketamine and Nitrous are weak comparitively to what I saw, and there was a reason he could be "on it" for 3/4 of a day and then immediatly sleep. I don't know how to say it without speaking too ill of the dead, but I think you get the idea.

PPS, Google the Downtown Vegas Suicides for a true, fun, short read.

therealx··on Due to a problem with AWS, many "smart" vacuums or doorbells will stop working
I believe some higher end residential automation automation software support it?
therealx··on Psiloscoby: Psilocybin Brewed by Kombucha
Also of note is the microdose amount used in many studies is far below what you would take to "trip".
therealx··on Psiloscoby: Psilocybin Brewed by Kombucha
At the same time, when you factor in memory degridation on each recall and ever changing perspective - it'll drive you wild trying to match objective benchmarks with subjective tools.

Marijauna, while often a "light" drug, has quite the ability to pull mental difficulties currently just under the surface in to the top. People often stop dreaming/having REM sleep the same if they smoke before bed, which can't be good long term.

This is yet another reason we should be pushing for full legalization of all substances. Being able to go buy Xmg of pure psilocybin with no contamination and a constant dose is so very imporatant (defunding the cartels is just a fun side benefit to citizens safety.)

therealx··on Psiloscoby: Psilocybin Brewed by Kombucha
I think you can alleviate a lot of your anxiety (as far as you can without hacking the anxiety itself with, say, cbt) by being in tune with your body and not ignoring potential early symptoms of conditions that leave these lasting effects.

Combine that with only doing "allergy" doses first (think, peanut dust that would trigger your throat to swell, but not close as if you had taken a spoonfull of peanut butter), and you really will be okay.

As a pro tip I tell everyone exploring lsd/shrooms - always have a benzo on handy. If you need to end the trip NOW, it'll almost for sure do the trick. If you may be susecptible to mental trauma, you will be doing no one a favor by "pushing through" it.

Message me if you want :)

therealx··on Your brain runs your body using something like a budget
For a lot of us here, I think so. The downfall is that this approach assumes the reader already understands systems and how they often play together, which our community takes for granted as a skill.

I do personally like it, though. Explaining how, for instance, your food intake has tolerances which can be exceeded in either direction temporarily but will eventually catch up to you is exceedingly useful.

I'm always surprised how many adults think they can "just push themselves" to get more out of their life, whereas studies are pretty clear you only get a few weeks before regressing not only to the mean, but below it.
