go away, this isn't a social network

therealidiot··on No, I have no side code projects to show you
Can't even view without having (and being signed into) a LinkedIn account :(

It seems to be listed on Google but it doesn't work from there either, LinkedIn should get de-listed for this kind of shit. Cached view works though

therealidiot··on Federation, Privacy, and User Experience
Conversations is brilliant, but I have yet to see a decent XMPP client for iOS. There's Chat Secure, but when my friends used that it often wouldn't receive notifications, making it useless as a messenger.

I'm not sure if this was a limitation of iOS itself (probably) or just a poor implementation (Chat Secure definitely tries to do something with push notifications.)

It's difficult to use XMPP when most of my friends+family use iOS

therealidiot··on Reflecting on the Right to be Forgotten
Ah, I hadn't realised that!
therealidiot··on Reflecting on the Right to be Forgotten
I don't know, I often encounter [flagged] or whatever it is that happens to bad comments in the middle of a thread. It leaves me wondering what was actually said.

So it happens already, just for different reasons...

therealidiot··on Chrome 56 Beta: “Not Secure” Warning, Web Bluetooth, and CSS Position: Sticky
Which is why an option was suggested
therealidiot··on [dead]
Did anyone seriously expect any different?
therealidiot··on Ask HN: How many of you have paid for sublime text?
I've done it, it's usually running for a good chunk of every working day

I still use vim a lot though

therealidiot··on Everyone who can now see your entire internet history, including the taxman
Careful, those will sound like terrorist words to someone like Theresa May
therealidiot··on Bruce Schneier: 'The Internet Era of Fun and Games Is Over'
> It could be implemented similarly to the way spam is handled by the internet, bad neighborhoods and networks that don't self police are treated as second class citizens.

Please no, the way spam is handled on the internet means that anyone who isn't already a massive internet company is usually treat as a second class citizen

therealidiot··on UK government could force ISPs to block adult sites without age verification
It's this kind of shit that makes me hate living here. The UK feels so backwards, I often want to leave - maybe I will? It just gets me so frustrated.

But, I know that anywhere I would go will probably already (or soon) have similar policies. I don't even want to be on this damned planet, argh! Just far away from the "people in power" who keep coming up with these things.

It's not even about porn, it's just the idea of age verification being required to access _any_ kind of site.

therealidiot··on How to accept Bitcoin payments without running a full node
The author mentions being plagued by crashes/corruption, but I've never experienced this and I've been running a full node for a few years. Other than the large (well, not _that_ large) storage requirements (.bitcoin is currently 101G) I've not got any complaints...

Unless there's a bug in a recent version of bitcoind which causes it to crap out when initially catching up with the network?

therealidiot··on Laws or comets?
The content on this page draws off to the right of my screen, and I can't scroll horizontally so it's unreadable...

This is on a fully maximised browser window at 1920x1080, normal zoom level.

How does this happen?

therealidiot··on A Proposal for an Email Avatar Header
I've not looked much into it but I've seen Libravatar, which claims to allow for federated avatar hosting

therealidiot··on Having fun abusing the C language
I read somewhere about someone redefining goto as goat, but I can't remember where.

Might have been the Lua Programming Gems book...

404?
therealidiot··on Ask HN: Why have OS updates become so aggressive?
User choice has gone out of fashion
therealidiot··on From Elon Musk to Tim Cook, tech leaders hardly follow women on Twitter
This reads like an angry rant and not much else

What, are we going to police twitter now and force people to follow certain lists of other people?

therealidiot··on Show HN: Cypht – Unique Open Source Webmail
Don't these typically require access to the private key though?

I'm not comfortable uploading my private key to a webmail server, even when its my own server

therealidiot··on Show HN: Cypht – Unique Open Source Webmail
I'm curious, what is the problem?
therealidiot··on PulseAudio is now required in Firefox Nightly
It sounds as though the code for plain old ALSA is still there though, so if you're building from source you can still enable it

...phew!

therealidiot··on KrebsOnSecurity is now up and hosted on Google Cloud
Let's hope router manufacturers include sensible firewall defaults. They probably won't in many cases, though.
therealidiot··on All quiet in the IPv4 Internet?
I was pleasantly surprised when I was given a global IPv6 address at my parents house (where they use Sky). I had no idea they'd already managed to do it, and was expecting them to drag their feet for as long as possible.
therealidiot··on iPhone 7
Isn't this a bit of an empty statement? That much should be obvious. One person's experiences/choices aren't ever universal
therealidiot··on An Exhibition of Japanese Portable Record Players
There's a modern one which is of a similar design, called the LP 2 Go

therealidiot··on Teens Who Say No to Social Media
The web link doesn't always do the trick for me. It's a shame Google continues to index websites that it doesn't work for.
therealidiot··on Dropbox employee’s password reuse led to theft of 60M+ user credentials
I recently had a fight with password selection on the Azure portal. They have some truly awful password rules, and I've ended up using something that isn't completely terrible but is much worse than normal, because I simply couldn't get it to accept anything decent.

Thinking about it, my account was added by a company using Azure, perhaps they are able to set the password restrictions for their sub-accounts...

therealidiot··on Cjdns: a secure non-anonymous P2P network
I've been using this for a while, and it's really cool. I've not found a huge number of "public" services on the network, but I've used it for IP tunnelling and also to access my machines without having to worry about dynamic DNS.
