theparanoid··on As oil and gas exports surge, West Texas becomes the world’s “extraction colony”
California has many many clear-cuts. Just not directly on I-5.
theparanoid··on [dead]
I used linux.org to learn about Linux way back when I first started 15 years ago. Sad to see they let the domain expire -- https://twitter.com/kitlol5/status/1070845707756625920
theparanoid··on Zig: software should be perfect [video]
The vast majority of bugs aren't are due to corner cases that the programmer didn't think about. Quickcheck and related techniques expose many more bugs than eliminating OOM bugs.
theparanoid··on One Reason That MIT Should Reinstate Scheme and 6.001 (2009)
Universities do have courses that require contributing to an Open Source project. I saw this when working on Servo a couple years ago. I was disappointed in the students. The average university student is not very motivated.

If the course is an elective it's probably better (more motivated students).

theparanoid··on IBM acquires Red Hat
It's not wishful thinking. RedHat could have remained standalone.
theparanoid··on A Love Story That Upended the Texas Prison System
Women love bad boys e.g. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2179107/James-Holme...
theparanoid··on Tech suffers from lack of humanities, says Mozilla head
Every ABET accredited engineering school in the US is required to give a class on professional ethics as part of the degree. Doesn't seem to have much effect.
theparanoid··on State education rankings are riddled with methodological flaws
> race here is an an unwitting proxy to income, so disaggregate by household per capita income

Poor white students do better academically than well off black students. So splitting by race is more informative when discussing academic performance.

theparanoid··on John Urschel Goes Pro
Contrary to the article most people shouldn't try to be professional mathematicians. All the people I knew in a mid-ranked program switched into software afterwards to make money.
theparanoid··on Americans are changing their relationship with Facebook
The programming subreddits aren't as good as HN. I follow quite a few local subreddits (my city, Yosemite, etc).
theparanoid··on GoAWK: an AWK interpreter written in Go
I feel let down, GAWK would have been a great name.
theparanoid··on How Women Came to Dominate Neuroendocrinology
Males are more variable in a wide variety of traits than females. Any cognitive test yields more men on the far left of the curve than women and more men on the far right.

The Slate Star Codex article is a good reference http://slatestarcodex.com/2015/01/24/perceptions-of-required...

theparanoid··on Show HN: Just Get Me Food
Doesn't work in a Sacramento suburb. Tried cafes and restaurants.
theparanoid··on Most Remote Spots in USA Wilderness Complexes
I suspect Sierra Pacific [0].

theparanoid··on Teenager Finds Classical Alternative to Quantum Recommendation Algorithm
As someone who finished undergrad classes as a teenager. I totally failed to live up to my potential.
theparanoid··on Big Tech’s Hot New Talent Incubator: Community College
You need a decent resume. I graduated with a math degree and couldn't get a software engineering job until going back and getting a CS degree. I'd already been programming for years. There was another guy from my class that had to do the same too.
theparanoid··on In Q2 2018, Global VC Scales Tipped In Favor Of Chinese Startups Over American
This was my experience in a low-tier US master's program. Most of the students from India were doing it for the second chance at making engineer money.
theparanoid··on Ask HN: Do you use budgeting software?
I used to use Mint. I'm not an impulsive spender so there was minimal benefit. It doesn't require software to figure out most of my disposable income goes towards housing, health insurance, and car expenses.
theparanoid··on China overtakes U.S. for healthy lifespan: WHO data
The US lifespan is decreasing due to opioid overdoses. Similar to Russia in the 90's with alcohol.
theparanoid··on A female engineer's opinion on why there are fewer women in tech
"why are so many women maids or professional housekeepers?"

Same reason so many men are janitors.

theparanoid··on Ask HN: Anyone making money through algorithmic trading?
I suspect hard work and smarts. I've made money in sports betting and it's mostly grinding through looking opportunities and avoiding bad bets. The smarts part is avoiding bad bets. If you don't know who the sucker is, you're the sucker.
theparanoid··on ReformedFelonForHire.com – High quality software skills, at a competitive price
I feel for you, being convicted of a sex offense makes you persona non grata in the US. If nothing works you can freelance via Upwork, it can pay OK for US workers.
theparanoid··on ReformedFelonForHire.com – High quality software skills, at a competitive price
The legal liability is the same.
theparanoid··on For mathematicians, = does not mean equality
A succinct summary is that mathematics is about understanding a thing and computing is about describing a concrete process.
theparanoid··on Anne Wojcicki on How to Build the Future
> My first honest reaction: it does seem fairly incestuous. And then I'm not even getting into. well, let's say more diversity would be a great thing here.

To play devil's advocate, Marie Curie was worse. She, her husband, her daughter, and her daughter's husband all won Nobel Prizes. Marie even won it twice in two fields.

theparanoid··on Defeat your 99th percentile with speculative task
You're correct, they should be more paranoid.
theparanoid··on Closing the Loop: The Importance of External Engagement in CS Research
Jon Blow said--I believe--in a tweet that he decided against academy when reading grad students' papers proving the optimality of some algorithm where, in practice, caching was of prime importance (or something to that effect).
theparanoid··on My daughter's disabled. Please don't look away from her
I'm doing an internship in a long-term-care facility (one resident has Huntington's) and there's no easy way to accommodate the profoundly disabled.
theparanoid··on Evolution Is the New Deep Learning
Computational processes have picked up where mathematics stops.
theparanoid··on The Declining Value of a CS Master's Degree (2013)
Regehr is beating around the bush. In my MS it was about 65% Indian BS students and 35% local students (various backgrounds). The local students were working professionals and the Indian students just wanted the credential.

The cause is simple, an MS is very advantageous when applying for an H-1B.
