theonething··on Miscellanea: The War in Iran
> They're saying, we did everything right. We got rid of the trans people in the military. We fired the worst women and black people in leadership roles. We put a real tough guy in charge of the military. We told our troops to stop worrying about rules of war and let them off their leash. So why is Iran still able to fight?

Who exactly is saying this? Your comment is worthless conjecture.

theonething··on Miscellanea: The War in Iran
Except for the little detail that Ukraine doesn't have a history of launching rockets into allied nations, invading embassies and holding staff hostage, unprovoked attacks against allied interests and ships in international waters and massacring it's own people for the crime of speaking out agains their government.

> Iran was "contained" under Obama's deal with them

Oh, you mean the JCPOA that Iran violated (before it was rejected by Trump) by failing to disclose storage of undeclared nuclear material at secret sites in Turquzabad between 2009 and 2018 and at Lavisan-Shian, Varamin and Marivan starting in 2003 to early 2000s?

UN watchdog declares Iran in breach of nuclear non-proliferation duties: https://www.iranintl.com/en/202506123029

The JCPOA, had weak stipulations on nuclear constraints that sunsetted after 15 years. The deal did not address Iran's missile program, human rights record or support for proxy terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

> Iran was in good faith negotiation

Iran has historically made promises, broken them and lied about it.

"The best time for Iran to have given up the weapons pursuit was after the 2003 embarrassment of being caught clearly lying about its nuclear program, but it did not. Over the years, the IAEA Board of Governors issued several warnings to the UN Security Council about the “possible military dimensions” of Iran’s nuclear program"

Wow, ok...

Iran invaded the US embassy holding 52 civilians hostage, has conducted unprovoked attacks against US, Israeli and other interests for more than 40 years, regularly launches missiles into Israeli airspace, indiscriminately attacks merchant vessels in international waters, massacres and tortures tens of thousands of their own people for the crime of speaking out against their government, sponsors terrorist groups like Hamas that massacred over a thousand people including children, raped women, etc.

As for your comparisons of Israel to Nazi Germany, did the countries that Germany invaded have a history of launching rockets and terrorist attacks at Germany? Has Israel rounded up Palestinians in concentration camps and executed millions of them in gas chambers?

But you're saying it's Israel that needs to be contained and they are Nazi Germany. Ok...

> plenty of analysis warning of the risks that have now become reality

You can also easily find analysis warning of the opposite: the risks of not invading Iran. See Nazi Germany and WW2 for an example what happens when you fail to contain a belligerently rogue country.

theonething··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2026)
Just to be clear, this is for anyone not in the US, correct?
theonething··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2026)
Just fyi to others that in the "Details to Keep in Mind" section is a notice that US residents can only reside in Texas, Florida, Alaska, Pennsylvania or Colorado.

Looks like a cool job, but unfortunately I'm not in one of those states.

How about hiring a gardener to do some of the stuff and you can focus doing the part of the gardening/landscaping that is important to you and you enjoy?

I think that's a more accurate (and charitable) analogy than yours.

theonething··on Coding agents have replaced every framework I used
A huge advantage of frameworks to me is to give new comers to the code a unified frame of reference. A Rails developer (or even a non-Rails guys who understands MVC) can jump into a Rails based codebase he is not familiar with a lot easier than the custom "from the ground up" thing the author espouses.

It's puzzling to me that the author doesn't even mention this huge and obvious benefit of frameworks.

theonething··on How I estimate work
> The same way nobody finds writing tests or documentation fun

I'm not sure if it's the fun category, but at least they are useful and because of that, satisfying to do. In fact when I finish a solid suite of tests or good, clear documentation, I find it very satisfying. I can't say the same for poker/estimation. I've found to be them a complete waste of time in every job I've had and therefore soul sucking.

> you seem to describe where everybody only works on their specific type of task and can't even estimate anybody else's work, then that's a danger situation when they leave or get sick or whatever and nobody else can step in and everyone's blocked because the only person who can do X is gone

you're conflating the ability to estimate accurately with the ability to implement.

Just because I can't estimate a task accurately doesn't mean I can't do it.

theonething··on I don't care how well your "AI" works
> GP who is essentially betting on AI producing more jobs for hackers

I'm not clear on the point you're trying to make. My comment was in response to dugidugout's analogy.

If I understand their analogy correctly, developers are the well fed turkeys and one Thanksgiving day, we're all getting slaughtered.

That is not hyperbole and fear mongering to you?

theonething··on I don't care how well your "AI" works
Your comment is hyperbolic fear mongering dressed up in a cutesie story.

Our industry is being disrupted by AI. What industry in history has not been disrupted by technological progression? It's called life. And those that can adapt to life changing will continue to thrive. And those who can't will get left behind. There is no wholesale turkey slaughter.

theonething··on The Theatre of Pull Requests and Code Review
> “every commit must compile” - again, unnecessary overzealousness.

my understanding is that you commit when you are at the "good place", where the part of the code you are working on works. That way when you keep going and find yourself going in a direction that is not right, you can go back to the last good place. If your code doesn't even compile, that doesn't seem like a good place.

theonething··on Are touchscreens in cars dangerous?
Mazda does a good job with screen placement. It's higher up on the dash, so you can see it clearly while looking straight ahead in normal driving position. Ie you don't have to take your eyes off the road to see it. Also, instead of touch screen to navigate and select, you use a scroll wheel that is in the center console behind the gear shifter. It's within easy reach of your right hand (in left driver side cars) and again, you don't have to take your eyes off the road to use it.
theonething··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
> You know, when LGBT people were famously regular victims of violence from citizens and cops alike?

What point were you trying to make here?

Requoting your earlier claim:

> But Kirk was definitely not advocating for "healthy debate and disagreement."

This seems to be a general characterization of Kirk, that he generally did not advocate for healthy debate and disagreement. By watching his many videos where he frequently listened to opposing viewpoints and also by the fact that he always had an open mic during speaking events, it's pretty easy to disprove your claim.

Cherrypicking one or two incidents where you interpret his words as against healthy debate doesn't support your claim.
