theomega··on 200k people applied for jobs at Amazon in a single week
Only slightly related: If I open the link on my iOS device, music playing stops (Spotify). Somehow CBS manages with their useless auto play videos to kill my background music playing. Should this be possible? I thought there is no auto play video on IOS?
theomega··on I Lost My $50k Twitter Username (2014)
I never had a good feeling with GoDaddy, their managment console is bad, they are spamming you constantly with offers and their pricing is not transparent. And now this story. What are good alternatives for Domain registration and DNS hosting?
theomega··on Building a distributed time-series database on PostgreSQL
I can only recommend TimescaleDB. It solves the right problems (storing timeseries) while not creating new ones (deployment, backup, hot failover) as it relies on Postgres to provide the underlying infrastructure. I stored 100 million sensor samples in TimeScale and had not issues with scaling on medium sized boxes, despite issuing complex time-series queries.

As for the hosting option, currently sadly AWS doesn’t offer Timescale as part of RDS. There are two options: Azure offers Timescale now as part of their hosted Postgres. Or you go with aiven.io who can host you postgres with TimeScaleDB on all cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure, DO, ?) as a service, including replicas and backups.

Overall, I’m very happy to see the Postgres ecosystem growing.

theomega··on Show HN: SVG Wave Generator
That is a snappy and easy to understand tool. I’m just wondering what I could do with one of these wave svgs...
theomega··on Show HN: IOU – Split shared expenses
Alternative to this is KittySplit. Similar concept, no registration required and web-based. https://www.kittysplit.com/en/
theomega··on Show HN: Pitaya Go, IoT Dev Board with Multiprotocol Wireless Connectivity
Slightly related: I’d love to see a cheap DevBoard available which can be programmed easily and runs well on battery. While ESP8266 and ESP32 dev boards can be programmed easily, they use a lot of power due to their added components and not energy saving way of making.

The ESP8266 and ESP32 chips are reasonably energy saving but there are afaik not cheap boards which leveraged the property.

The SparkFun ESP8266 Thing [1] might come close, but is not very cheap.

theomega··on OpenDrop: An Open Source AirDrop Implementation
Just to make it more obvious: You don’t have to self host it, there is a free (no registration) Version deployed at https://sharedrop.io

Works perfect between IOS, Android, Linux, MacOS and Windows.

theomega··on Show HN: A spectrogram app in less than 100 lines of HTML and JavaScript
Worked fine on my IOS Safari on IOS 12.3 on an IPhone XS
theomega··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
Any recommendations for what vendor and what line to go with?
theomega··on Hermes – A message broker built on top of Kafka
Answering my own question (RTFM): https://hermes-pubsub.readthedocs.io/en/latest/user/subscrib...

You can configure how long it retries and with what strategy.

theomega··on Hermes – A message broker built on top of Kafka
This sounds very interesting. Did anyone get from the homepage what kinds of guarantees this offers? What if the HTTP endpoint where Hermes should push the data to is down? Does it retry? If yes, for how long?
theomega··on Time Series Databases to Watch
I have used TimescaleDB for several purposes. As it is built on top of Postgres, all the existing tools, libraries and processes work out of the box. This is a huge advantage if you are operating Postgres anyway: Your existing backup tools will work, as does your user Managment.

Scaling out is a more complex story: Read Scaleout works seamless using read replicas (another existing Postgres mechanism). Replicas can also help you for high availability, Write scaleout is difficult with TimescaleDB (same for Postgres): Sharding can be an option, or buying bigger machines.

theomega··on Show HN: A Simple Resume Generator
That is a neat idea. The PDF generation doesn't work though. Firefox 65.0.1 (64-bit) on MacOSX.

I have the feeling it is a frontend problem, the PDF gets generated but never displayed (network request to https://resumeserver.herokuapp.com/ gets issued and gets a valid PDF as response).

theomega··on Ask HN: Whats the best alternative to Inbox?
UI wise, for me it is the much more responsive interface, especially in Firefox. I always had the feeling that GMail was especially slow/laggy in Firefox.
theomega··on Munich Re buys IoT middleware startup, relayr, in deal worth $300M
There is an interesting overlap in insurance and IoT: The big insurance companies like MunichRE are big in the business of insuring other companies against downtimes of their (industrial) machinery. If you equip machines with sensors, there is the chance of predicting downtimes (and unplanned maintenance) and preventing them. So the insurance can offer better pricing.

Overall, a lot of stuff in the insurance business depends on having the right data available. If you manage to collect the right(!) data using sensors, you can get an competitive edge.

Of course, a lot depends if you can crack the data analytics problems around predicting and preventing downtimes.

Disclaimer: Worked for Relayr

theomega··on Django EAV 2 – Entity-Attribute-Value Storage for Django
Can somebody explain a usecase for this?
theomega··on Ask HN: What are the best resources to learn about compilers?
I can recommend the book „Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools“ [often called „Dragon Book“]. It explains from the basics with all the theory how to write a Leser, parser and much more features. It is one of the few books I bought after university.

theomega··on Why Use OpenStreetMap Instead of Google Maps?
While I love OSM for the data and the free approach, one thing which annoys me with OSM is that their main map doesn’t support hdpi (retina) displays. That makes the map look ugly on iPad and MacBooks at least, I suspect on much more recent devices.
theomega··on Show HN: ClimaCell Micro Weather API – high-resolution, real-time weather
Why not allow me to check the weather at my location without singing up, so I can check how go the info is?
theomega··on Show HN: RESTful API Handler || NodeJs
Is checking in the dependencies into git something recommended? Your package.json should state the dependencies.
theomega··on Life is Short (2016)
Sam Altman published a very related piece three years ago:

“The days are long but the decades are short” https://blog.samaltman.com/the-days-are-long-but-the-decades...

theomega··on Show HN: Open Paperless – Scan, index, and archive paper documents
Depends on two things: Your space and your privacy requirements. Google Mail works for example if you are willing to trust Google. A lot of email providers offer you a lot of space.
theomega··on Show HN: Open Paperless – Scan, index, and archive paper documents
I want to show an alternative approach to managing your documents:

Store them in your IMAP/Mails. Either on an own account or in a dedicated sub-folder.

I wrote some small python scripts [1] which allow you to: - Add an email with the PDF attached to your document collection. The script supports adding a subject and adding tags to it - Go over all the emails and run an OCR (tesseract) on them: Attach the OCR result together with the pdf to the email.

Big advantage: - Search on IMAP is a solved problem - Clients for every operating system in the world, including web, mobile - Super simple backup and restore

Over course, very geeky, nothing for your parents, but maybe something for you?

theomega··on Show HN: RESTfender – Connect and secure your IoT devices
Jay, sorry to say this, but I don't get your product. I'm coming from the IoT space myself and I'm having trouble understanding what your offering is. Is it a reverse proxy for my home IoT devices so I don't have to expose them via PortForwards? If yes, how does that work?
theomega··on Show HN: Letsencrypt (and other) certificate dashboard
Interesting, thanks for sharing.

How does the support for multiple protocols (so non https but tls protocols) work? I was able to add my imaps server but it doesnt' show in the certificates. This could be because the same certificate is used by my https server. But your site should not take it for granted that both, imaps and https will always use the same certificate. I would love to see a report per "server".

theomega··on View Counting at Reddit
Very interesting article, thanks for publishing.

I have two related questions: 1. I assume the process which reads from Cassandra and puts it back to Redis is parallized if not even distributed. How do you ensure correctness? Implementing 2PC seems extreme overhead. Or do you lock in Redis? 2. What database is used to actually store the view counts? Cassandras Counters are afaik not very reliable...

theomega··on KeeWeb: Unofficial KeePass web and desktop client
Would it be possible to connect this to WebDav (i.e. Own cloud)?
theomega··on Scientist4J – A Java Port of GitHub's Scientist
How can I provide parameters to the experiment function?
theomega··on Facebook ad click numbers are inconsistent with other analytics
I think the explanation here is that Facebook tracks clicks on the banners on their site while the author of this post tracks page views using GA or other tools. These are two different metrics. In between lies (at least one) redirect (from Facebooks click tracker to your website) plus a full load of your website. There are a lot of visitors who click but never make it to the second link: Be it because they accidentally pressed the link (very likely) or because they decided otherwise and aborted.

I'd still go with your conclusion that it is difficult for the advertisers to track whether the ads pay of if you are paying per click. I would not go as far and say that Facebook is doing fraud or scam.
