themdonuts··on Steve Jobs emails Eric Schmidt (2007)
Honestly I could see this happening in Europe, mainly when such high profiles are involved. Even with robust workers rights this still happens a lot. If the company wants you out they'll get their way. Employees can always dispute at the employment court, but it's overwhelming so few do so and companies leverage that.
themdonuts··on 'Dieselgate' trial opens in Germany without ex-VW boss
It's funny how the dieselgate scandal was just a few years ago (and still ongoing) and now that same company's big and bold slogan is "VW way to zero - roadmap for climate neutral mobility". We live at a time that a bit of shame is easily forgotten.
themdonuts··on Students flee field as computer 'fad fades' (1987)
I went to uni in 2004 and always had a crush for civil engineering. A few days before signing up my dad told me: I feel construction is stalling, I think you should go for Electrical Engineering. Best advice ever. By the time I finished construction was indeed dead and there were too many programming jobs.

Similarly to other users here from Europe, in 2010 the market was actually starting to take off. My dad was such a visionary... or I just had a total lack of it!

themdonuts··on Why we have so many problems with our teeth
I've recently realized how Indians in general have such perfect teeth. Some of my Indian colleagues even say they've never been to a dentist in their life. It seems like anecdotal evidence supporting how diets are that important to teeth health.

Reading this made me stand back up from bed and go floss.
themdonuts··on Google to Slow Hiring for Rest of 2020
I'm not so sure if Google did that much to help with the Covid situation. Yes, they checked the box of throwing a bunch of chromebooks at the problem and money and are also extending the tracking of people to "help identify potential new cases". But did they actually do anything out of the box that doesn't directly help them? As an example, my company allows us expensing up to 2 family meals per week from local businesses to help these. They are also extending the deadline with holidays not spent from last year so employees don't lose them. These are little things that actually make a difference. I know Google didn't come up with any of these things for their employees, but I'm sure Larry and Sergei's Google from back then would have done this and much more.
themdonuts··on Ask HN: How can I pick a side project and stick with it?
Get people using it. Period.

Result: with every user interaction you will get a refreshment of motivation. I've done it for 5 years.

Long version: I was all about starting projects and never finishing, until one day I actually put one online and started spreading the word through discussion boards.

So step 1) Launch and spread the word. You get 1 thing out of this immediately: you WILL finish it to the bare minimum, because what if someone actually tries to use your product?

You could argue: yeah, but when I give up on the project it's no where near ready to be launched. I would argue back that if you dropped it, it probably means you got something out of it - could someone also benefit from it? Maybe, at that moment switch your brain to: now let's launch this and spread the word.

Step 2) Put metrics in it You want to see if there's people coming to your website. Crucial for step 3, read on.

Step 3) You will see people coming to your website and interacting with your product. This is the best part, because it gives you such a kick of motivation that will make you want to continue working on it. It just keeps giving.

I've started a project 5 years ago and I put it out there and forgot about it. 2 months after someone used it and I got my first reservation. That was such a source of motivation!! It's magical and it's a cycle. As I continue working on it as my side project and as I start losing interest, I get a new user which then sources me with more motivation to keep going. This cye repeats

I've learned a lot in terms of business, technology stack and devops, but all this applied to the same project I started 5 years ago.

themdonuts··on Please Buy Less
Most of the times when people realize what you realized and go for a change of habits - less buying and doing the same with less/minimal lifestyle - the first step they take is to throw stuff away. I've done it myself. Now I really stress the reuse and the repurpose before throwing anything away. Otherwise sell. At the end of the day is one crap less that ends up in some landfill.
themdonuts··on The Difference Between Amateurs and Professionals (2017)
I've interpreted "amateurs" as people that are not good at what they do. People that have a job or a main activity but don't try enough and don't have the mindset to give the best of them. The whole list made sense from that point of view and less from "amateur" as a person that has a hobby.
