thelibrarian··on macOS Ventura is now available
This was an upstream change in OpenSSH, not an arbitrary change by Apple.

Also, scp was in fact broken, and they fixed it by changing it to use the SFTP protocol under the hood.

thelibrarian··on “You meant to install ripgrep”
Totally anecdotal, but I have found ripgrep orders of magnitude faster than grep when searching a large corpus of data (in my case, many multi-hundred megabyte to gigabyte XML files). As in, ripgrep completed the search in seconds, grep took multiple minutes. I'm sure I could have done some research to optimise/parallelise grep, but ripgrep worked doing the "dumb" search.
thelibrarian··on Apple iPhone 14 Pro Camera test
The 8 Plus was the first to have extra camera capabilities on the Plus/Max model.
thelibrarian··on Apple iPhone 14 Pro Camera test
For many years the max models did have better cameras, but for the 13 and 14 both pro models have identical cameras.

thelibrarian··on House passes bill to codify marriage equality with large bipartisan support
So the opponents' position is something like this?

Supreme Court: rules marriage equality is constitutional

Bigots: damned activist judges shouldn't legislate from the bench

Congress: legislates marriage equality

Bigots: damned activist legislature shouldn't legislate its concurrence with the courts!

thelibrarian··on To hook diners, an invasive species of carp gets a new name
Here's a fun, short alt-history novel set in a world where that plan was actually implemented:

thelibrarian··on Show HN: Redbean 2.0 in Docker
If you want to host it on a service that hosts Docker images, such as fly.io or AWS Fargate.
thelibrarian··on Schools Are Spending Billions on High-Tech Defense for Mass Shootings
Treating a symptom rather than the disease always works so well.
thelibrarian··on To avoid Finland’s tax a 1,000HP imported Hennessey RAM is limited to 55MPH
A lack of fulfilment in their lives, which leads them to compensating with displays of conspicuous consumption.
thelibrarian··on What makes a great opening line?
His followers called him Mahasamatman and said he was a god. He preferred to drop the Maha- and the -atman, however, and called himself Sam. He never claimed to be a god. But then, he never claimed not to be a god. Circumstances being what they were, neither admission could be of any benefit. Silence, though, could.

thelibrarian··on In second largest DeFi hack, Blockchain Bridge loses $320M Ether
I think you would have less risk if you were selling life insurance policies to Soviet soldiers in Stalingrad in 1942.
thelibrarian··on One Twin Went Vegan, the Other Ate Meat. This Is What Happened
The cholesterol change is easily explained - meat and dairy are two of the main sources of LDLs (“bad” cholesterol) in the western diet.

The diabetes one is harder to explain/link, as there are too many variables. One possibility is that the twin that went vegan ate fewer sugary snacks due to the fact that most such things are not vegan.

thelibrarian··on Octopuses, crabs and lobsters to be recognised as sentient beings under UK law
I have a friend who says using the word “octopi” displays ignorance of three languages at once - English, Latin, and (ancient) Greek.

thelibrarian··on Art and Theosophy (2006)

thelibrarian··on I Will Never Use a Microsoft Account to Log Into My Own PC
No, it is not. Apple does encourage setting up/associating an Apple ID account, it is not a requirement.
thelibrarian··on Things Unexpectedly Named After People
The best example of this is Torpenhow Hill in Cumbria, England. Torr, penn, and howe all mean “hill” in different languages.
thelibrarian··on Minneapolis City Council members announce intent to disband police department
Interesting...though they are talking about replacing the MPD with something ("a new transformative model") at least, not leaving the lot empty, to continue the metaphor.
thelibrarian··on Minneapolis City Council members announce intent to disband police department
If an apartment block were riddled with termites, asbestos, and concrete cancer, the people saying that it should be demolished aren't proposing that the residents revert to sleeping under the stars in the empty lot left behind.

Likewise, the people proposing that the MPD be abolished aren't saying that Minneapolis should go without a police force, just that they need a whole new one, without the legacy of the old one.

thelibrarian··on Never-before-seen “black nitrogen” plugs puzzle in periodic table
Being previously unfamiliar both with the black phosphorus allotrope, and with newatlas.com, I clicked on the link wondering if this would be the new “red mercury”. I was pleasantly surprised that it is much more interesting (and scientifically valid) than that.

thelibrarian··on Patio11's Law: The software economy is bigger than you think
Why would you use an ecommerce platform instead of a regular SQL database?
thelibrarian··on Bill Gates Has Regrets
FYI, dietician > nutritionist. Dietician is a protected term, like doctor, or dentist. Nutritionist is not. Any joker can call themselves a nutritionist.

Going to see a nutritionist rather than a dietician is like going to see a toothiologist rather than a dentist.

So it is rather an insult to your sister to say that she is "not even a nutritionist".

thelibrarian··on For Roleplayers Who Start Writing
Yes, play by post most certainly is still a thing. Most RPG forums (e.g. https://forum.rpg.net/) have a play by post subforum, and https://rpol.net/ is a forum dedicated to play by post.
