It's fine to critique studies and findings. It's not okay to say that you or your facebook friends know better and can substitute your own thoughts on a subject. That is how we get Covid deniers or vaccine conspiracy theories or the million other misinformation issues we have right now.
Be very careful about how you word stuff like this, even if at the end of the day it's just healthy skepticism. It's the same vibe that gives power to conspiracy theories.
The current alternative to scientific studies (with their varying degrees of bias and flaws) are Facebook-esque anecdotes about rednecks eating bacon that apparently are so compelling that they get upvoted to the top of HN.
The only logical thing to do is to follow current scientific consensus the best we can. Adjust ourselves as those views adjust.
Anything else is just pure ego saying that you know better than experts. Random examples where you were "right" or the scientific consensus was "wrong" are irrelevant.
Edit: I'm just saying that the scientific method is the best tool we have for this kind of stuff, even with the bias and flaws of the studies. It's miles and miles better than Facebook-esque anecdotes about rednecks eating bacon.
Video calls don't work for me, and everything is closed in SF. It's hard to explain, but video calls just don't seem real to me. It does very little to energize me in my friendships. I don't know how people do it.
Half my friends have taken the opportunity to move away, so they're gone for good except for a few times a year that we travel to each other after Covid. The other half I'm desperately hoping things naturally get back to pre-covid friendship levels.
Your trunk should also be empty of anything valuable. There's no reason to keep much back there overnight. I guess thieves could steal my tire chains and donut right now, but that hardly seems worth the trouble.
Smash and grabbers don't care about alarms. They'll be gone in a few seconds anyway.
Probably just a factor of:
1. More cars around me in the city than in the small town I came from.
2. More things that can set off the alarms (loud motorcycles being a big one).
I'd support legislation making it illegal. Why are car alarms exempt from noise ordinances?
It's not too far off to say "Parlor was created as a space for hate". Only used for hate is obviously wrong, but that doesn't change much.
Why do people jump to the most extreme side of things in discussions now a days?
There are many many many ways to disperse of a crowd that doesn't involve firing live rounds at a crowd. In fact: they were able to do it later!
Tear gas, flash bangs, barricades, rubber bullets. None of these were used until well after they made it inside.
Then they stopped allowing me to send checks, so I had to open an account with another bank just so I can have checks when I need them.
Then in the few times I needed support, I couldn't get it. One time I tried to buy a car and was having trouble with the payment. I tried to call them and it turns out that their support phone line closes at 3pm PT! How is that acceptable?
I'm glad they're shutting down, because it'll get me to actually fully switch over to another bank, which I expect to be a lot of effort.
I still disagree, though. It seems like the only logical way to get out of your thought process would be to create software and then never update or change anything. Either that or have every user sign a waiver saying that the product could change in the future and that might impact them psychologically.
After all, why is it different when you're making a change without A/B testing it? Surely every change has some hypothesis attached to it. Does it only matter to you when developers observe the metrics changing?
They were doing A/B tests and were tracking sentiment. So what? How is that different than running an A/B test and tracking any other dimension?
People were asking questions like "how many people died because facebook was manipulating their emotions?". What? Why can't we say that about any change ever? It seemed to only matter to people when they started looking at sentiment.
Honestly this whole poll post should be shut down. The amount of misinformation being shared is astounding.
Are these the people downvoting me?
This is likely complete misinformation. Why is there so much misinformation on HN today?
This is a very selfish take. Unless you're living your life without any human interaction, then you're contributing to the spread of the flu and soon to be covid which impacts people who are at risk.
But unless it wasn't clear: I'm pissed at the massive amount of people saying they won't take the vaccine because of conspiracy theories. Not even the HN can escape them, apparently. I literally just saw and commented on someone spouting one in this thread just 20 minutes into the thread. And I got downvoted for calling them out, even when they agreed and took it down.
And then thinking that this vaccine which has been properly trialed and not rushed is going to somehow be worse than, for example, 1 in 1000 people in the UK already dead. Seriously?
So yeah, I'm going to shame people.
(Unless people are confused and saying "I will wait" when in fact they're going to be forced to wait until their turn comes around)
You're part of the problem.
