Reddit is a hellhole. I lived on Lemmy for a while and its really just as bad.. maybe worse because you have to deal with the insufferable open source hardliners.
For actual information, hacker news, rss feeds, podcasts, and medium posts are the only things I can stomach anymore.
The problems at work are also real, actual problems.
I have trouble with the coding section of the interviews but I do know how to write code. If the coding section of the interview was like "build me a ci pipeline for this app" or "find all the workloads in this cluster which need X attribute" or "design a terraform module to do Y" then I would pass with flying colors.
In the average SRE role, it has been my experience that there are very few situations where I would need to build out a perfect O(1) algorithm. Nothing I write is going to be so heavily used that this level of performance is something to be concerned with. These are the only code problems I really see when interviewing though.
There really should be though especially when the company in question was able to afford $1 billion in stock buybacks just 2 years ago, and when the CEO has a $3 billion net worth, and when they are well known for not paying their suppliers (the artists) a fair price for the content they create.
In the same neighborhood, my daily headphones are the wired Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros I bought as a graduation gift to myself from high school.. That was 20 years ago. Again, not broken. Work great. Why do I need anything else?
I thought I might be able to do some light development work on it.. No chance.
I don't even know why it has so much storage space. The file system is so poorly designed it's a pain in the ass to transfer anything to it.
Al Jazeera's English broadcast is actually quite good for showing an outside, more neutral view of the world (unless the story relates to Qatar) too.
The Russian central bank did not invade Ukraine but it provided a mechanism to pay for that invasion.
Her Patreon account may not have actively promoted disinformation but it provided a mechanism to pay for that disinformation.
Both needed their own versions of deplatforming for the same reason.
"That guy is our best player! He scores more points than anyone else in the team by far! Quick! Let's pull him out of the game and make him the coach!"
Why not keep him in the game and just look for someone who can be a good coach?
You can apply for residency in places like Mexico which require very little physical presence to maintain/renew a visa for the first few years. After 3 years (I think) you have to live there for the last 18 months before applying for citizenship.
Chile is the opposite in where you must spend the first 18 months in the country but after that you only really need to be there once a year.
Other countries have generous tourist visas like Turkey. If you rent an apartment for one year in Turkey (anywhere, for any price) you can get a 1 year tourist visa.
Wikipedia has a list of all countries visa policies as well. You could find out about where you are allowed to stay for longer than 90 days somewhere by searching for "visa policy of $COUNTRY".
Then there are places offering visas for remote workers but requires you to live there for at least 6 months of the year (making you a tax resident of that country). This includes places like Portugal, Estonia, Georgia, and the UAE.
I believe in Georgia and the UAE they will not charge income tax for the first year as well but I may be wrong.
If you have deeper pockets there are Golden Visa programs for places like Portugal, Greece, Malta, Cyprus (might be wrong on this one), New Zealand, Georgia, Montenegro, and many Caribbean nations.
Lastly, most every country in the world has some sort of business owners or startup visa. If you're entrepeneurially minded and have sufficient startup capital, you can get a visa pretty much anywhere in the world.
EDIT: I use travelingmailbox.com for snail mail and OpenPhone to maintain US-based communication for whatever reason.
At the moment I am mostly stationary but I still have projects and/or goals in at least 4 different countries.
They are doing the best they can in an incredibly difficult time and correcting course when necessary. Grow up.
I'm sure this works for Adam making god knows what at ILM though.. its just not for me in a software dev environment.
I don't think that companies are deliberately trying to be awful to workers. They are just using the standard American model.. "How much can we get away with?"
The country is in desperate need of widespread unionization efforts.
For all the hate silicon valley-type companies get, I honestly love the spot I'm in. I think it has more to do with team structure and management trusting you enough not to micromanage. Hard to verify that as a job seeker though.
I can buy an Arylic board for 1/10th the price of a Sonos speaker. It functions in exactly the same way and doesn't collect my data. The information Sonos collects is not necessary.
