thekyle··on Toyota has stepped up lobbying to preserve its investments in hybrids, hydrogen
A new Prius MSRPs for $25k and a Model 3 MSRPs for $40k.

I don't see how you can say $25k and $40k are basically the same price.

thekyle··on Show HN: A Search Engine for Widgets
Hi HN,

Many web search engines today provide useful interactive results right on the search results page (weather, stock charts, calculators, etc.) and I wanted to build a search engine where 3rd party developers could build and submit their own interactive results to the index.

It also has a Google Search widget built-in for general web results.

You can opt out of monetization, but I don't think you can opt out of ads anymore.

thekyle··on Don’t Wanna Pay Ransom Gangs? Test Your Backups
If they do leak your data after you pay, then it'll ruin their reputation and make it less likely for other victims to pay in the future.
thekyle··on You Hacked: Cyber-security and the Railways (2017)
I've seen worse. Other than some missing images, this one works fine for me.
thekyle··on Do patents kill innovation? The US patent office is asking
I wonder if a system where keeping a patent active requires paying an exponentially increasing annual fee would help. So anyone could file a patent for say $1,000 in the first year, but then it would cost $2,000, $4,000, $8,000, etc. to keep it active in subsequent years.

That way, it would be financially infeasible for even the largest companies to hoard patents for years, but an individual inventor could start small and pay the fees as their business grows.

If the new job doesn't pay more than the old one then why bother switching?
thekyle··on Nvidia Canvas
Was anyone really training ML models on Mac to begin with? Pretty sure most people run Jupyter on a Linux server somewhere and develop in their browser.
thekyle··on Blockchain Is Puny
If you look at those lists, most of the items are not illegal. They mostly consist of things like gift cards, gambling, pornography, etc.
thekyle··on Cloudproxy – hide your scrapers IP behind the cloud
Just so you know, adding rel="nofollow" has never been intended to prevent bots from following those links. Even famous crawlers like Bingbot will sometimes follow, and index pages linked to by "nofollow" links.

The only thing that rel="nofollow" does is tell search engines not to use that link in their PageRank computation.

If you do want to block well-behaved crawlers from crawling parts of your site, the proper way to do that is to use robots.txt rules.

thekyle··on Microsoft is bringing Android apps to Windows 11
I wonder if they are counting Surface tablets in those numbers. I don't think they sell very many, but 0.1% seems too low.
thekyle··on Introducing Windows 11
A few years ago, I decided to buy a Windows 10 Pro retail license, which I figured would last pretty much forever since "Windows 10 is the last version of Windows". I wonder if my Windows 10 license will be able to activate a new Windows 11 install or if I'll need to buy another.
thekyle··on The Most Dangerous Censorship
> Why do we care more about Hong Kong than Snowden?

Well, Hong Kong is an entire city of people, while Snowden is just one guy.

thekyle··on Apple is building the metaverse substrate
I'm curious what you use the Galaxy screen share feature in Windows for, because I've tried it a few times and always found it to be a bad user experience.
thekyle··on AltStore – An alternative app store for non-jailbroken iOS devices
I'm guessing it's because Google Play is more lenient than the App Store when it comes to privacy.
thekyle··on DuckDuckGo’s quest to prove online privacy is possible
If they crawled the sites themselves, then they could detect tracking code and allow users to filter out sites with that (filter by no ads, no analytics, no paywall, etc.) However, since they mostly just use Bing I don't know how easy that would be.
thekyle··on Amazon S3 quietly deprecates BitTorrent support
It seems to me that the worst case scenario for using BitTorrent is that S3 is the only seed and everyone downloads from that, however, I don't see how that is worse than the alternative which is to offer direct downloads from S3.

In other words, from a costs perspective, the worst case scenario for BitTorrent is the best case scenario for direct download.

thekyle··on Linux on Chromebooks just might get me through a masters in computer science
Why did you regret the purchase?
thekyle··on FaceTime is coming to Android and Windows via the web
The new SharePlay feature is actually quite cool. You wouldn't think it would be terribly difficult to share a movie or TV show on a video call, but actually due to the DRM that everyone uses it's almost impossible.

Using the normal screen sharing feature of most video conferencing apps simply doesn't work and shows a black screen instead of the video. The workaround that people I know have been using during the pandemic is the torrent the media and play from a local file which works fine, however it would be nice to have more legitimate means of doing it.

thekyle··on FaceTime is coming to Android and Windows via the web
I would say most likely yes.
thekyle··on In Praise of Open Source Textbooks
> A similar question might be “why would you invent a new programming language, when you could just use an existing one?”

I feel like this is a bad analogy if you are trying to support the idea that teachers need to make their own lesson plans. Could you imagine if every programmer had to build their own programming language before using it create software? Nothing would ever get done.

Instead, the vast majority of programmers just use one of the many existing programming languages.

thekyle··on Password Managers
I must be missing something because when I go to the Chrome password manager all I see is this:

https://i.imgur.com/h7ZAGZw.png

When I choose to edit an entry, it only gives me the option to have a username and password. I don't see where to put security questions or backup codes, etc. and searching around for a TOTP generator feature also yielded no results.

thekyle··on Password Managers
> I would recommend using the one already built into your browser. They provide the same functionality, and can sidestep these fundamental problems with extensions.

I haven't used the browsers built-in password manager for years, so I don't know what features they have, but I find it hard to believe that they can provide the same functionality as a dedicated password manager.

Some of the top features of dedicated password managers include:

* Generating random passwords/passphrases (this is pretty basic)

* Storing and generating two-factor authentication codes (TOTP)

* Filling out passwords into mobile apps as well as websites

* Storing security questions, back up codes, any other site specific data that needs to be secure

* Storing credit card information

* Platform agnostic syncing

* Sharing passwords with friends, co-workers, or family

* Weak password checking / HIBP integration

I'm sure that the browser password manager can do some of these things, but I doubt it can really do all of them.

thekyle··on Wall Street struggles to sell Washington on Bitcoin for the masses

thekyle··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
Did you verify that the drives holds 2 TB of data? From Wish.com I wouldn't be surprised to order a 4 TB drive and get a fake 2 TB drive that actually only holds 500 GB.
thekyle··on Apple has a decade-long lead in wearables
> I put my watch on the charger whenever I go to sleep.

One of the things that always confused me about the Apple Watch (and other smartwatches) is that they market them as sleep tracking devices, but if you do use it for that purpose then I'm not sure when you're supposed to charge it. I guess you could charge it during a morning (or evening) shower but is ~30 minutes a day of charging enough?
