theklr··on Ask HN: Are you going to quit?
Kudos to you stepping out and up and getting what you’re worth.
theklr··on Apple's Diabolical Plan to Control the Ad Buisiness
Eh, there’s nothing here, yet. Apple previously attempted this with iAds and they were trash due to the privacy measures then. Their news app allows the publishers to have ads as well and it’s still trash, and fairly private. I’m just confused in what’s the argument, is it that apple is also doing ads or is it the privacy aspect? Cause I will for damn sure take Apples mess v. Meta/Google.
theklr··on Recession Added 528,000 Jobs in July
This is being dictated by companies who don’t quite have their own compass and seem to follow whatever X CEO(s) are doing. The fact that majority of these startups were dumb enough to ramp up growth with everyone locked in to only consume shows how much business just seem like going through the motions than actually knowing their business, knowing the market, and properly navigating. Then again they’re all pleasing investors more than creating a sustainable (not always necessarily “record” profitable) businesses.
theklr··on Sony completes $3.6B deal to buy Bungie
From what it looks like PlayStation bought for the now dissolved Sony Online Entertainment. They haven’t been in the live services genre since then for the most part. This partnership is leveraging Bungie’s expertise in this space. Especially being multi platform studio. With them trying to attract more players in this space, allowing independence feels like a steal if half of the 10 LS games by 2026 are a success.
theklr··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
I wonder if these now fired employees can get some talks with one of SpaceX’s employers, NASA.
theklr··on Coinbase employees petition to remove execs
but are they as stable as Coinbase and still hiring? For the most part Crypto/web 3 is in a hiring tundra outside of SecOps.
theklr··on Bots behind the game console shortage
They do this already. Like others mentioned, they have retail partners that they have to play nice with.
theklr··on Netflix to Employees: If you don't like our content, you can quit
They don’t want the truth? Like teens get horny and start questioning about sex, but instead of treating it with the proper bodily function it is let’s ignore it and promote scare tactics that still to this day are effective. God forbid you don’t want to have a unplanned pregnancy or worse.
theklr··on Apple, Google and Microsoft Commit to Expanded Support for FIDO Standard
Both FIDO and W3C are neutral places for this. Mozilla being a part of W3C and FIDO will have a say. This is just a PR stunt that the tech journalists ate up. They’ve been working together to make this for the last two years, it’s just an announcement to accelerate the work on it.
theklr··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
This and the laundry list of reviews from Europe should make an interesting WWDC. However, I am growing concern in the security risk these “anticompetitive” statements are. While I'd like idea of a more open iPhone, I also understand the technical aptitude of majority of their customers. This feels like a potential opening for more exploits where the iCloud leak could look like child’s play.
theklr··on Ask HN: CNN+ Software Engineers
This. CNN has loss the gravitas it believes it has to foolishly have the hubris to believe there’s enough people to see their “anchors” do side/passion/fluff work. If it was bundled with the full channel they may have been able to, but unlike ESPN+, they don’t have content for an audience that would succumb to their efforts.

Edit: ex-CEO Jeff Zucker and old execs made the decision. If you look at the photos online of the teams, it was clear that this outcome was inevitable.

theklr··on Yesterday I Was Levi’s Brand President. I Quit So I Could Be Free
They already do? Look at the ability to unionize and the immediate army a company will deploy to nip it in the bud.
theklr··on Ask HN: Who's sick of remote work?
Not sick of it per say, but sick of its current iteration. Too much is attempting to mimic in person.
theklr··on How to put bad habits to good use
It’s against the commodification of mindfulness/wellness. See girlboss/hustle culture. Unfortunately our society oversimplifies to the point becomes another marketing tactic.
theklr··on How tumblr became popular for being obsolete
Kinda is amazing outside the pr0n kerfuffle, in essence it’s remained itself. A shame that advertising broke its popularity but glad to see that it’s finally under ownership that isn’t trying to put it against X.
theklr··on Show HN: Meetup with other travelers in a new place
love the idea, would love for other chat alternatives as well, telegram or signal fields would also be great. As well as mentioned possibly some iconography for the type of friendship you're looking for/ providing. As someone else mentioned, someone's cheekiness in their bio can be misinterpreted as coming on.
theklr··on Show HN: Meetup with other travelers in a new place
That. I think just if this is to scale, have some iconography to indicate the types of relationships you're providing/looking for.
theklr··on Apple Products 2021: 'Meh' 3 of 2021
How many of these writers with these posts jumped in tech in the peak of the smartphone revolution? Or graphics cards? Cause it doesn’t seem that many get how the “revolutions” work. It’s waves of change due to the prolonged periods of “water-torture” incremental upgrades. We’re now only looking back at the insane jumps we got and not the years of Blackberries, Palms, and Windows Phones that laid a lot of groundwork. Learn about the neural processing that’s baked in M1 to future proof it to truly be a decade long device. Learn about the underpinnings of watchOS in series 7 and while you may not see it if you’re not active in the spaces, tennis, karate and some forms of dance are now recognized from your wrist. Sure, there not attention grabbers but that’s not “meh.”
theklr··on Privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo grew by 46% in 2021
Apple Maps is growing their look around feature. So if your in a major city it’s comparable.
theklr··on California governor to create Texas-like law to ban assault weapons
If only uprooting was as simple as writing this. I’m all for the ideological implications of this but without the social safety net to be able to do this, it feels another extension of increasing classism.
theklr··on Black couple ‘erases themselves’ from their home, its value goes up by $500k
You know both can be true, and majority of the racial disparities are deeply tied with race in America.
theklr··on Black couple ‘erases themselves’ from their home, its value goes up by $500k
Sorry, historical evidence begs to differ. These laws have only been in place in many cases in America for less than a century known as redlining and unfortunately most places have not made the said adjustments needed to remove the systemic problems that it created.
theklr··on Black couple ‘erases themselves’ from their home, its value goes up by $500k
Because white is not a race, it’s used as a counterculture to the use of Black (previously also Negro and Afro), and historical evidence supports that. “Black” is only used as an identifier by that ethic group and their erasure of ethic identity. While African American is another term, within the culture of the of the group, it’s lacking once more an actual origin and lumps those who do actually know their African origins with those who don’t, leading to the premise of the self-codified ethic term Black. This term has been preferred by the National Association of Black Journalist since 2017 and was picked up by major newspapers and the AP only last year.
theklr··on Black couple ‘erases themselves’ from their home, its value goes up by $500k
There is an AP guideline established that clarified the use of the capitalized Black in reporting: https://apnews.com/article/race-and-ethnicity-us-news-busine...
theklr··on What do I need to read to be a CSS dev?
Just echoing the other users. It’s definitely great and the community that comes with it is good, but the value prop it’s asking for, particularly since it’s attempting to charge a college course, you can be fine through trial by fire. A meetup, or even a proper discord can give you similar value.
theklr··on Ask HN: Do you tell your salary to people/family/friends outside your industry?
This is exactly why I share my salary. In order to curb the pay disparities in marginalized groups, we have to be willing to be honest about wages.
theklr··on Netflix fires organizer of trans employee walkout
Don’t do this. Both sides have to stop with generalizations. And both sides have to stop using their handful of [x] friends to represent a non monolithic community. One’s experience doesn’t justify bigoted actions.
theklr··on Ray-Ban Stories: hands-on with Facebook’s first smart glasses
This isn’t even near Google glass. This is a direct competitor to Snap’s Spectacles. Glass was also attempting to place a computer-like device on your face. These are no more than fancy head video cameras.
theklr··on Amazon reportedly has a ‘key’ to thousands of apartment buildings in US
This seems like something to watch as it’s not just a key. Amazon is imploring management groups to integrate their software/hardware. This feels like their purchase with ring. It’s another area that Amazon can be in this privacy/surveillance market overnight. “It’s free…”

I just wish there was something more than just this as the story. It feels unfinished.

theklr··on We Need a New Term for Video Games
Isn’t there already a term? Experiential Entertainment. Most of the suits prefer this title already, and allows video games to be a subset, as it’s also used for xR as well.
