thehodge··on Show HN: Parakeet, simple Twitter automation (4 day project)
Whilst I'm not blaming the creator, these sort of services annoy the fuck out of me.. I hate following them and getting an instant DM saying 'thanks for following, checkout my blog' I almost always unfollow, it's really impersonal, same with with people that thank automatically every follow by putting Thanks for the follow @username, meaning everyone who follows that accounts see's every message (unlike @username thanks for the follow! which is still automated and a bit shitty but doesn't annoy everyone)

thehodge··on I Sold The Magazine, Too
Excellent news, no note about what he's doing next though?
thehodge··on Google Checkout will be retired, transition to Google Wallet
Thanks, We are planning a visual refresh of the site and Stripe will certainly be part of the new offering :)
thehodge··on Google Checkout will be retired, transition to Google Wallet
Someone suggested Bitcoin today, as a merchant, what would you recommend to start accepting it? a third party service?
thehodge··on Google Checkout will be retired, transition to Google Wallet
I looked at Braintree but I found the fee's not worth it at this stage, I've looked at NoChex and a few other providers but there is a worry about giving people too much choice, at moment we have PayPal, Google Checkout and GoCardless, I'd be looking to replace GC with either Stripe or NoChex
thehodge··on Google Checkout will be retired, transition to Google Wallet
It's a real shame that Google Checkout never really was what was promised, we've integrated it into our shop and we have more GoCardless payments than Google Checkout, it was a horrible system to deal with and I won't miss it when it goes (and if I ever get a response about the Stripe UK beta I'll be swapping that quick sharpish)

We've had more declined transactions on Google Checkout than PayPal + GoCardless put together.

thehodge··on Real-time UK Bus Data Ruby Gem
Sadly not massively, the local arriva service is lacking and there is centre bus which seems to be running sheds with wheels. First have a good 80% of the routes in Leeds.
thehodge··on Why MongoDB is a bad choice for storing our scraped data
I read the whole post waiting to see what they ended up using as we are having similar issues, only to find that it's another post I have to wait for..
thehodge··on Show HN: I built a self-hosted Basecamp alternative. Try the demo
This is excellent and I love the single price rather than a monthly fee (it's one of the reasons I bought amaon)
thehodge··on Show HN: Launching Hoverboard – beautiful, responsive portfolios
+1 for having a colour tweak on certain things.. even from a list of 12 in a palette (would be good on a per project basis)

I signed up the other day, looks like a really nice start (I love the interface).

I would suggest that it could pull in certain stuff from linkedin as a baseline (roles and such)

thehodge··on Adobe is going to kill Fireworks
I really hope this isn't true, I've yet to find a replacement for fireworks either open or paid

Would be great if you could also add links to audible, I'm always looking for hacker recommended audiobooks
thehodge··on The other side of working for yourself
Do you also go to bed at 4am? I also don't consider web surfing on my smartphone actually work. I was about to go to bed now actually, it's 2am and I've an 8am train but here I am, web surfing, Puzzled by your comment really, not sure if your just trolling or just saw the fact that I get up at 10am and commented.
thehodge··on The other side of working for yourself
I want to write about this in another post, but previously I spent a lot of time going to events like barcamps and meetups and even though I wasn't going with the express intention of selling myself, I'm still getting leads and emails today from those meet ups.

There is so much of 'not what you know, who you know' and a lot of work these days that I get is through recommendations, I'd highly recommend taking some time each week to go to local meetups (not so much business related ones) as not only will you find people in a similar situation, you might find you can work with some of them later

thehodge··on The other side of working for yourself
Exactly! It is very easy to think oh, I'll do this now and carry on later, then later get distracted with things.

At home especially, dishes to wash, rooms to clean, always something that could be done but separation is a must

thehodge··on The other side of working for yourself
I tend to put stuff on that I've already seen, that way I don't have to concentrate on things, partly it's there to have something to stop it being quiet
thehodge··on The other side of working for yourself
Hey HN, I'm still not sure why I wrote this but I get asked a lot about 'how to set up a business' and 'what is it like working for yourself', I just wanted to write about some of the real things that I feel and go through working in startups and building things
thehodge··on Shark Tank Statistics
Share Tank is also interesting because to even go on it, I believe you have to give 3% to the network no matter what the outcome of the show is, investment or no investment..
