thegrim000··on San Francisco Graffiti
As if there's no creative avenues available for people to express themselves other than spray painting people's property ..
thegrim000··on House vote keeps federal "kill switch" vehicle mandate
I was visiting my parent's home recently and driving their new car. Was driving down a road and there was some debris in my lane, so I started to steer to the outside of the lane to avoid hitting it, and the car decided to apply counter steering input to keep me in my lane, pushing me back towards the debris, ignoring my commanded steering input. The fact that stuff like this exists and is common now and is wildly accepted is absolutely insane to me.
thegrim000··on SpaceX lowering orbits of 4,400 Starlink satellites for safety's sake
Adjust them again as needed ..
thegrim000··on Capital One to acquire Brex for $5.15B
It's extremely common advice to not keep large sums of cash sitting in your checking account. With capital one (and others) you can just open a free savings account, keep the bulk in there (if you don't want to invest it instead), which earns an actual interest, and then there's never a "big" amount of vulnerable cash sitting in your checking account. There's free/instant transfers between savings and checking when you need to move more into your checking.
thegrim000··on Internet voting is insecure and should not be used in public elections
You know, kind of an interesting test here. This was posted 13 minutes ago and the comments so far are mostly all supportive of not wanting internet/insecure voting methods, all supportive of pen and paper. I wonder if after an hour or two the propaganda hoses will have been turned on and all the top comments start to have the reverse messaging in them, saying internet voting is perfectly fine, and such initial comments downvoted into oblivion.
thegrim000··on Disaster planning for regular folks (2015)
Going out searching for more food after 2 weeks just ensures you're placing yourself amongst people that haven't eaten in 2 weeks and are willing to do anything they need to in order to eat.
thegrim000··on The Walls Are Closing in on Tesla
I mean, when you look through the site's article history and all you see is numerous negative doomer posts about every single business Musk is involved in: SpaceX, Grok, Tesla, Optimus, Musk himself, you name it, and not a single positive or even neutral post about anything, that's probably a sign that this author is not who you should be going to in order to receive objective, unbiased, rational discussion on the topic.
thegrim000··on SETI Home Flags 100 Signals After Sorting 12B Others
I've pretty much given up on traditional radio SETI ever finding anything, as its sole focus is on trying to find terrawatt/mega scale, repeating, intentional alien communication beacons, and nothing else. As I don't believe aliens would make such things, I don't believe traditional SETI will ever find anything.

Out telescopes aren't sensitive enough to detect the power levels of comm signals that aliens would use internally. Even if SETI saw a random powerful signal that happened to hit us, if the signal doesn't continuously repeat it just gets put into the "random transient, didn't repeat, who knows" bucket, and discarded.

The 100 signals they've detected will be looked at again with telescopes, and when they don't see the same signal repeating, they'll all just be discarded. Even if they were in reality actual emissions from aliens that we happened to see, if they're not intentional, repeating, comm beacons, the signals will just get discarded as unverifiable.

If aliens actually made terrawatt scale comm beacons, we would have easily seen them by now.

thegrim000··on The Influentists: AI hype without proof
You know, there's a number of different competing propaganda battles going on:

1) There's the people and companies that stand to make money and build up companies by convincing people to buy their ai projects, hyping up ai, etc.

2) There's companies and nation states trying to destroy competitor's / other country's ai efforts, turn citizens against them, in order to gain an advantage/lead in the race.

3) There's, conversely, nation states that want to boost up and promote their ai industry in order to win the race rather than other countries winning (assuming there's a "win" at the end, like AGI, which I don't believe there is).

4) Normal citizens that have been ideologically brainwashed one way or the other, and so are going online to argue in a culture war for their beliefs / "side".

5) People posting crazy takes on ai, one way or the other, to get clicks / money on their articles.

The whole topic is awash in serious propaganda. Effectively the only path forward is believing what you yourself know for sure, from your direct experience / knowledge.

thegrim000··on Iran is likely jamming Starlink
The claim you're making has been thoroughly debunked countless times. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starlink_in_the_Russian-Ukrain...
thegrim000··on 65% of Hacker News posts have negative sentiment, and they outperform
In some recent sentiment analysis experiments I did, I also noticed that stories that were classified as either rule-breaking or overly political in nature got significantly more upvotes on average than stories that were classified as within the HN guidelines and not political. The current system essentially provides incentive for that type of content.
thegrim000··on Why didn't AI “join the workforce” in 2025?
Interesting that this guy claims to be a "staff level SWE at a major company", yet one year ago he was on HN posting about how horrible of a time he was having getting a SWE job, how he's failed multiple interviews, including at FAANGs, was being rejected for even no-name small startups, had failed multiple interviews because of inability on algorithm questions ... and yet within the last year he was supposedly successfully hired on at a "major company" for a staff-level senior coding position.
thegrim000··on What you need to know before touching a video file
I've really felt gaslit over the last decade from people continuing to promote VLC as such a great thing, when I've had nothing bug bugs, crashes, glitches, issues with it for a full decade now (on Linux). From 10-25 years ago I definitely used it for everything, all the time, but now even the default Ubuntu totem video player (or whatever it's called) seems like 2-3 times as likely to be able to play a random video file without an issue as VLC does.
thegrim000··on Bankruptcies are exploding across the economy
Here's some of the other submissions by the OP:

"As A.I. Companies Borrow Billions, Debt Investors Grow Wary", " Bankruptcies soar as companies grapple with inflation, tariffs", "Apollo cuts risk and stockpiles cash in preparation for market turmoil", "The Private-Credit Party Turns Ugly for Individual Investors", "Stock Market Crash Is Here: How Bad Can It Get?", "Investors seek protection from risk of AI debt bust", "Oracle Credit Risk Gauge Deteriorates After Earnings Report", etc, etc, etc.

Wow, look at that. An account that overwhemingly only post doomer scare mongering anti-US economy stories. Surely just a normal human posting normal stories that hackers would find interesting, and there's no other motive behind their posting pattern at all.

thegrim000··on New York to require social media platforms to display mental health warnings
I'd personally consider it infinite scroll as you can scroll through as many pages of stories as you want. There's only the slight friction of having to click the 'next page' button every now and then. In an app like Instagram or whatever, you'd also have the friction of swiping your thumb on the screen to see more. They seem pretty identical to me.
thegrim000··on New York to require social media platforms to display mental health warnings
My initial question would be why they those to analyze those 11 specific chemicals, out of the 900+ that received the warning, and whether the same results would be seen with any of the other 889+ chemicals, or were those 11 specifically cherry picked.
thegrim000··on Don't Become the Machine
The post is about him believing in hard work but not wanting to see what's essentially propaganda promoting such work ethic in his feeds.

Ok, but is that really the worst thing? People are already constantly afloat in near endless foreign propaganda at this point; pawns in the latest cold war, all being slowly convinced to destroy their own countries from within. Culture / traditions / historic ways of life and governing being overthrown and replaced.

But really, promoting hard work is the top of the list of what this guy complains about and doesn't want to see in his feed? That'd be at the bottom of my list of propaganda campaigns to complain about.

thegrim000··on The AI bubble is all over now, baby blue
What analysis? There is no analysis. "The economics don't make sense to me and therefore it'll crash and burn", and "here's two articles from mainstream media that are worried about AI spending". That's the extent of the article's content. That's the extent of the analysis. He himself offers absolutely zero argument, data, or facts.
thegrim000··on ICE's interest in high-tech gear raises new questions: 'What is it for?'
Every single story this user submits is political hate. Every comment they make is political hate. And yet they're a multi-year power account with over 10,000 karma. What is the justification for allowing such accounts to exist, other than the mods being complicit with it?
thegrim000··on Satellites reveal heat leaking from largest US cryptocurrency mining center
For example, why couldn't you use the waste heat like a power plant? Use it to boil water, to turn turbines, to generate electricity, which gets sent and consumed elsewhere? Adding to the heat wherever the electricity is finally consumed. (Ignoring various losses along the way).
thegrim000··on Satellites reveal heat leaking from largest US cryptocurrency mining center
I read it as the inefficient part isn't the compute efficiency, the inefficient part is dumping all the resulting heat into the environment without capturing it and using it in some way to generate electricity or do work.

On a related/side note, when there's talk about seti and dyson spheres, and detecting them via infrared waste heat, I also don't understand that. Such an alien civilization is seemingly capable of building massive space structures/projects, but then lets the waste heat just pour out into the universe in such insane quantities that we could see it tens/hundreds of light years away? What a waste. Why wouldn't they recover that heat and make use of it instead? And repeat the recovering until the final waste output is too small to bother recovering, at which point we would no longer be able to detect it.

thegrim000··on A collective fuck-you letter from humanity to 2025
So, it's just a collaboratively edited two minutes of hate session.
thegrim000··on Deliberate Internet Shutdowns
>> Elon's shutdown of Starlink over Ukraine

"In February 2022, two days after Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine requested that the American aerospace company SpaceX activate their Starlink satellite internet service in the country, to replace internet and communication networks degraded or destroyed during the war.[2][3][4] Starlink has since been used by Ukrainian civilians, government and military.[3][5] The satellite service has been employed for humanitarian purposes as well as defense and counterattacks on Russian positions.[6]"

"In 2022, Elon Musk denied a Ukrainian request to extend Starlink's coverage up to Russian-occupied Crimea during a counterattack on a Crimean port, from which Russia had been launching attacks against Ukrainian civilians; doing so would have violated US sanctions on Russia.[18] This event was widely reported in 2023, erroneously characterizing it as Musk "turning off" Starlink coverage in Crimea.[19][20]"

thegrim000··on New mathematical framework reshapes debate over simulation hypothesis
Once again, discussion around the simulation hypothesis that for some reason assumes the simulating universe has the exact same laws of physics / reality as the simulated universe. Assuming that the simulated universe can use their mathematics to describe/constrain the simulator universe. It makes no sense to me.
thegrim000··on The state of the kernel Rust experiment
Well yeah, that's the strategy.

"You don't need to learn it or use it, we just want to do our own separate things with it over here"

.. some time later ..

"Oh yeah it's working good for us, we think it'd be useful to use it in these additional places, think about the benefits!"

.. some time later ..

"Now it's going to be core and required, either deal with it or get out"

They know they could never jump straight to the last step without revolt, so they shove their foot in the door with fake promises and smiles and then slowly over time force the door all the way open until they eventually get what they wanted from the beginning.

thegrim000··on Amazon will allow ePub and PDF downloads for DRM-free eBooks
99.99% of the time when you read something on the internet and your reaction is "that's wild" / "wow that's crazy" / "that's unbelievable", then what you are reading is in fact likely nowhere near the actual truth / real.
thegrim000··on The Mysterious Forces Steering Views on Hacker News
I mean, the real steering force is the fact that somewhere between a quarter and a third of all stories on HN come from the same ~20 power users whose accounts post a dozen stories every single day of every single year to the site. Last time I ran AI sentiment analysis over the stories from those accounts, it classified over a third of them as either breaking HN's posted guidelines or as being "extremely" political in nature. And yet the mods are seemingly fine with the situation.
thegrim000··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
It's funny .. earlier today there was a front page HN post about the federal government mandating safer circular saws. It seemed like the majority of users in the thread were in favor of the federal government mandating technology changes to prevent harm from being done to the population.

Now for this issue, there's harm being done to children, and the majority of users in the thread seem to be against government intervention; you say: "well if you don't like it, if you think it's negative, just don't use it, don't let your kids use it".

Kind of a random parallel to draw between the two stories, but it's funny the same logic doesn't seem to apply in both cases. Why wasn't for circular saws the response "if you think they're dangerous, don't use them" or "just keep your kids away from them"?

thegrim000··on The U.S. government may finally mandate safer table saws
The federal government's responsibilities is literally to collect taxes to maintain a standing army, and to coordinate cross-state issues that the states themselves for some reason aren't able to regulate themselves. That's what its scope is supposed to be. Are states not able to pass the table saw regulations they feel is appropriate for their citizens? I feel like they are. Why does the federal government need to step in and mandate .. table saw laws for our states? For me it's just another small step in the long line of steps towards having one overarching federal government that controls everything, like other countries have, which the US is not supposed to have.
thegrim000··on Switzerland faces landmark climate-human rights ruling
I'm curious if countries like China, India, and Russia, have similar lawsuits and similar initiatives to reduce their emissions. I can't recall ever seeing a single story.
