thefringthing··on Blizzard Employees Staged a Walkout to Protest Banned Pro-Hong Kong Gamer
Americans: "How could one possibly define hate speech!?"

Most countries: Has a fairly clear legal definition of hate speech, in statute or precedent.

thefringthing··on The China Cultural Clash
Real race science hours on HN today, it would seem.
thefringthing··on Apple Hides Taiwan Flag in Hong Kong
Isn't that exactly what most of the commenters on this post are doing?
thefringthing··on Apple Hides Taiwan Flag in Hong Kong
There is no dispute about what country Guantanamo Bay is part of: both the US and Cuba agree it is part of Cuba.

The dispute is about whether the lease agreement which allowed the US to use that territory as a naval base is still in force. Early after the Cuban Revolution, one of the US's regular rent cheques was mistakenly cashed, and the US claims this is recognition on the part of Cuba that the lease remains valid.

Tibetan and French usually come up on lists of worst correspondence between orthography and pronunciation. Irish is also pretty bad. (It makes sense once you learn how it works, then stops making sense once you hear people of different dialects actually pronounce words.)
thefringthing··on Supreme Court: Suspending Parliament was unlawful, judges rule
Isn't the possibility of direct rule still looming with no government formed at Stormont for two years now? Direct rule seems like it would essentially be an abandonment of the Good Friday Agreement.

Wales is a constituent country of the UK but not a kingdom.
thefringthing··on Too Many Video Streaming Choices May Drive Users Back To Piracy
You can still do it at the library, and for free!
thefringthing··on China is increasingly using exit bans to bar Americans from leaving
During the Vietnam war, you could "go to Canada" basically only because Pierre Trudeau instructed the border guard to allow Americans who seemed like they might be draft dodgers to immigrate illegally. No guarantees there will be another arrangement like that next time.
thefringthing··on Israel accused of planting mysterious spy devices near the White House
All currently nuclear armed nations are in violation of the NPT, so...
thefringthing··on California passes bill that classifies gig economy workers as employees
> Life's rough. Hopefully I solve this problem with a better job in the near future.

A nation of temporarily embarrassed millionaires.

thefringthing··on Day Trading for a Living?
I worked on a Bitcoin sports betting site. Been there, done that.
thefringthing··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)
The US experiment with social democracy in the 1940s, which was not terribly comprehensive in the first place, has been slowly dismantled as the employer and political class continues to concentrate as much wealth and power for themselves as possible. Key to this has been to weaken and villainize labour unions at every opportunity.
thefringthing··on A book from Alan Turing and a mysterious piece of paper
The sentence is a train wreck to begin with. "Conspiracy theory" isn't a potential cause of death, and these things do not really form a coherent range. Presumably the conspiracy theories allege murder? In that case, I might write something like: "Turing's death is still an openly debated topic, with purported causes of death including simple accident, suicide resulting from bullying by the state, and even murder at the hands of a conspiracy."
thefringthing··on Supercentenarians are concentrated into regions with no birth certificates
The legendary Delta blues musician Son House is usually regarded to have been born in 1902, but comments he made about his own age would imply that he was born around 1886.

It has been suggested that he lied about his age when he moved up north in order to avoid being discriminated against when applying for jobs. Or he may have been born in 1902 and simply lying about, or genuinely mistaken about, his age.

thefringthing··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
> Hayek, Mises, Friedman

What a diversity of thinkers!

thefringthing··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
I live in Ontario where prices for medical care are negotiated by the provincial government, which you might regard to be a price control. The result is excellent, and one of several reasons I would never consider living in the United States.
thefringthing··on Chinese Cash Is Suddenly Toxic in Silicon Valley, Following U.S. Pressure
Even Taiwan does not recognize Taiwan as a separate nation. Its position is that the Republic of China still exists, is the only legitimate state in all of China, and that its seat of government in Taiwan.

There is a growing movement in Taiwan to give up on this claim and instead pursue an existence as a de jure, rather than merely de facto independent nation.

thefringthing··on Show HN: This page is a truly naked, brutalist HTML quine
W. V. O. Quine was one of the most prominent American philosophers of the 20th century. There are several collections of his essays; I recommend "From a Logical Point of View".
thefringthing··on Falsehoods programmers believe about Unix time
Still matters because some places want to make sure it's the same day (according to their local reckoning) as it is somewhere else in particular (usually a major trading partner).
thefringthing··on Uber Drivers Are Contractors, Not Employees, Labor Board Says
In Canada, white collar jobs often come with some extra supplemental health insurance, but it's not a huge deal for most people. I think I get half of dental costs covered, for instance. It's not literally life or death the way it is in the US's evil system.
thefringthing··on What happened after my 13-year-old son joined the alt-right
"Normal country", as they say. Gotta keep the school-to-prison pipeline pumping.
thefringthing··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
The Canadian constitution (specifically the part of it called the Charter of Rights and Freedoms) guarantees the same right, however, constitutional rights in Canada are granted only up to "reasonable limits". Those limits are determined by the Supreme Court.
thefringthing··on An entrepreneur has built a one-metre-long stretch of motorway in Romania
"Grab" only in the sense of "not leaving" when it would have been appropriate to do so.
thefringthing··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Phone Numbers (2016)
Here's a good one: All phone numbers can be reached using tone dialing. (I know of at least one phone number to which one can connect only using pulse dialing.)
thefringthing··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
Sci-fi author China Mieville recently wrote "October: The Story of the Russian Revolution".
thefringthing··on 64 and unemployed: One man's struggle to be taken seriously as a job applicant
It's pretty telling then you went for male pronouns to describe your hypothetical doctor.
thefringthing··on H&R Block and Intuit Lobby Against Free and Simple Tax Filing (2017)
This is not what anyone has meant by the term "democracy" for a thousand years.
thefringthing··on TSA acknowledges financial stress of shutdown is forcing officers to stay home
If this happened in France (or many other places) there would be strikes, barricades, burning towers of tires, the whole works. American workers are incredibly timid.
thefringthing··on A three-page paper that shook philosophy, with lessons for software engineers
My reaction Gettier cases as a philosophy minor was that J is the only philosophically interesting part of JTB.
