theferalrobot··on Germany tries to stop U.S. from luring away firm seeking coronavirus vaccine
Yeah, so there is an unsubstantiated german government source and then the very next sentence the company denies it themselves:

>CureVac issued a statement on Sunday, in which it said: “The company rejects current rumors of an acquisition”.

Finally they give a quote from a US rep:

> The U.S. government has spoken with many (more than 25) companies that claim they can help with a vaccine. Most of these companies already received seed funding from U.S. investors... any solution found would be shared with the world

theferalrobot··on Germany and US wrestle over coronavirus vaccine
Right, the german government confirmed that the US was trying to secure an interest in a german company, not that they were trying to get exclusive access. The reuters report even says as I quoted before:

> The U.S. government has spoken with many (more than 25) companies that claim they can help with a vaccine. Most of these companies already received seed funding from U.S. investors... any solution found would be shared with the world

theferalrobot··on Germany and US wrestle over coronavirus vaccine
That is because it is a completely unsubstantiated piece of news 'leaked' to appeal to European prejudices and thus increase CoreVac's negotiating power.

The idea that Donald Trump would be the person making an offer to the CEO of a tiny startup for a non-existent, as yet, vaccine should trigger alarm bells, as that's not how these negotiations work, at all.

If you want to understand how these things actually work, read this article:

https://www.fiercebiotech.com/medtech/fda-grants-roche-coron...

Additionally, US government officials are on the record stating that any discoveries would be shared with the world. Plenty of governments are providing funding to labs all over the world, this is not unusual behavior.

Right they confirmed that the US has been reaching out to companies to supply funding, which is what I just quoted. There is no evidence other than anonymous sources that the Trump admin was looking for an 'exclusive' cure only for the US.
theferalrobot··on Germany tries to stop U.S. from luring away firm seeking coronavirus vaccine
You should know this is fake news, if you read the Reuters report they cite as evidence there is no mention of exclusivity just funding. In fact the exact opposite is said.

Yeah and if you actually read the Reuters report it says the exact opposite of this business insider drivel.

theferalrobot··on Open letter from Italy to the international scientific community
>Just like China, there was a time when Italy had 1 case, then 2 cases, then 4, etc.

Just like the spread of fire, the window of opportunity to put it out is right at the beginning.

Yes, Italy could put it out when it first came to Italy but they would have to do it many many more times to successfully contain it. China just had to do it once and they failed.

theferalrobot··on U.S. will suspend all travel from Europe for 30 days
> He didn't say per capita.

But it's also not the case when looking only at absolute numbers either. I would also argue that per capita is implied because it's the only way you can really make that comparison.

theferalrobot··on U.S. will suspend all travel from Europe for 30 days
>In both cases, the death and symptoms will look identical the difference being in the underlying virus causing the issues.

As stated before that is absolutely false which is why those cases were caught. Will data be imperfect, yes, but that doesn't mean we should start throwing around Chinese propaganda.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/conspiracy...

theferalrobot··on U.S. will suspend all travel from Europe for 30 days
Again not even close, France for instance has a death rate 10x ours per capita, that's gonna take way more than 5-6 days.

The statement is inaccurate any way you slice it. Why use incomplete information when more is available?

theferalrobot··on U.S. will suspend all travel from Europe for 30 days
> but there are likely hundreds of other pneumonia-related deaths going on right now who might well be undiagnosed covid19.

Let's just throw around blatant speculation, that will help.

Speculation aside that is extremely unlikely to be the case for a variety of clinical reasons

theferalrobot··on U.S. will suspend all travel from Europe for 30 days
>Only vs. China, Iran and Italy.

What are you on about? We have fewer deaths than far more countries than that (France and Spain for instance) and per capita we are doing even better.

The US has fewer deaths than the following countries per capita:

Italy, Iran, China, S. Korea, Spain, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Albania, Lebanon, Netherlands, Belgium, Panama, Ireland, Iraq, Bulgaria, Japan, Australia, UK

theferalrobot··on Google tracking a bike ride past a burglarized home made the rider a suspect
>You don't know that GPS was required, nor whether or not cell records were subpoenaed as part of this investigation. All we have is what Google told the guy in the story.

I do know that because cell tower triangulation is on average only precise within about a square mile, which is considered far too broad for these types of searches.

>Apple has a location history feature just like Google does. If that data ever reaches their machines in a non-anonymized way, then it's subject to subpoena just like anyone else's data is. Do you have a cite that explains why this is impossible?

Location history on ios is stored locally, not logged and stored by Apple. Any data that is passed to Apple is anonymized. Per Apple:

"Where you go says a lot about you. Maps delivers a great experience without Apple knowing which stores, neighborhoods, or clinics you visit. And because Maps doesn’t include a sign-in, where you go isn’t associated with your Apple ID at all. Personalized features, like locating your parked car, are created right on your device. Data used to improve navigation, such as routes and search terms, is not associated with your identity. Instead, that information is based on random identifiers that are constantly changing."

AND

"If Location Services is on, your iPhone will periodically send the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers (where supported by a device) in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple, to be used for augmenting this crowd-sourced database of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower locations."

theferalrobot··on Google tracking a bike ride past a burglarized home made the rider a suspect
Yes the phone companies have data but it is far far less precise than GPS which was required in this case.

Additionally, Apple does not collect your location data like Google does so I am not sure why we should let Google off the hook.

theferalrobot··on Reddit CEO: TikTok Is ‘Fundamentally Parasitic’
I'll take TikToks 'parasitic' over Reddits toxic negativity any day of the week.

Go look at the front page of Reddit, then look at what's trending on Tiktok... From my humble perspective tiktok is a pretty positive place. Reddit on the other hand seems to have been overrun with political fighting and cynicism about literally everything.

It may not be popular among the tech crowd but for where I am in my life that is far more important to me than what permissions an app needs.

theferalrobot··on Microsoft begins showing an anti-Firefox ad in the Windows 10 start menu
The title seems misleading... how is saying, "still using firefox" Anti-firefox?

It's just a fact that firefox hit its prime in terms of market share long ago. It's now at what like 4% market share and falling? Hell, 'Samsung internet' is about to pass it up.

theferalrobot··on Standardizing OpenAI’s deep learning framework on PyTorch
Happy to see PyTorch get some love. The company I am at made the same switch and everyone has loved PyTorch. It has more expressive power than Tensorflow 1.x (there are models that cannot be done with static graphs) and is simultaneously much easier to use.
theferalrobot··on Mozilla says a new Firefox security bug is under active attack
Look again, a bunch of the original comments are gone.
theferalrobot··on Mozilla says a new Firefox security bug is under active attack
My most recent post was about the performance of Firefox on MacOS and comparing it to chrome and safari, then also looking at battery life. It was immediately removed.
theferalrobot··on An investigation into the smartphone tracking industry
For Facebook that may make sense but requiring the user to grant permission every time the permission is used would be vista era bad for some apps (maps, camera apps that geotags).
theferalrobot··on Sundar will be the CEO of both Google and Alphabet

theferalrobot··on PDC 1996 Keynote with Bob Muglia and Steve Jobs [video]
As an aside and for my own curiosity, where do you think accounting software is going in the future? (It isn't my industry but I hear occasional mentions of it more frequently than I would expect)
theferalrobot··on Andrew Yang's ideas on automation and mass unemployment are not based in reality
> Following the debate, a “fact check” by the AP claimed that Yang was right... “Economists mostly blame [manufacturing] job losses on automation and robots, not trade deals,” it stated. But this was incorrect. No such consensus exists

So they claim AP and Yang are incorrect but also state there is no consensus. This piece seems more like it is trying to justify the warren gaffe in the last debate by muddying the waters. The truth is be it automation or outsourcing our economy is changing and we need to be prepared for it.

theferalrobot··on What to Do When You Get Sherlocked by Apple
I can see what you are saying. Perhaps a third option of advice is being suggested here which is diversify your feature to make it better than a built in solution or diversify your business to make it resilient to these types of loss.
theferalrobot··on What to Do When You Get Sherlocked by Apple
That seems unnecessarily cheeky. If you can make money on it, its a product, if someone builds it in to their product line, perhaps they did it better (though not always).
theferalrobot··on The State of Machine Learning Frameworks
My former employer pulled in a few AWS data scientists to consult with us on a few projects and based on my interactions it seemed like they were under some directive to strongly discourage anything that wasn't a built-in AWS plug-and-play sagemaker algorithm. It was not a positive experience because of course most of them are half baked.
