Education, health, infrastrucure, science.
thecopy··on To make electricity cheaper and greener, connect the world's grids
Sounds like Germany and its people are getting greener and cheaper electricity
thecopy··on Natrium 'advanced nuclear' power plant wins Wyoming permit
Based on your comment it sounds unreasonable to select this design. It must have some reason to exist?
thecopy··on Thunderbolt 5 vs. Thunderbolt 4: Everything you need to know
Is this confusing naming scheme intentional?
thecopy··on Where can you go in Europe by train in 8h?
While i agree that EU airports are very efficient, 20 minutes before schedule take-off must be impossible. Surely you mean 20 minutes before boarding starts?
thecopy··on The Porsche Macan EV is being recalled because its headlights are too bright
This is related to inattentional blindness, where car drives dont notice motorbikes since drivers are used to looking for two lights - not one: https://motolight.com/inattentional-blindness/

In the same manner, a single bicycle light might not register as a vehicle in the minds of car drivers. By blinking the light the short-circuit is broken - or so the theory goes.

thecopy··on The Porsche Macan EV is being recalled because its headlights are too bright
Blinking lights makes the bicycle driver more visible. When sharing the dark road with cars, this compensates slightly against not being inside a steel cocoon with airbags.

If cities actually invested in safe infrastructure the need for such lights would go away.

thecopy··on Modern cars are surveillance devices on wheels with major privacy risks
Somehow they are still the symbol of freedom and independence by many. Even though very trackable, limited to government roads, oil infrastructure and significant state subsidies
thecopy··on Vitest vs. Jest
How large is your project?

Without process isolation we got 6x speedup vs. jest! But it is difficult to ensure a clean slate between our test suites (~40 suites which all use a test DB)

We are also using some helpers to mock, e.g https://github.com/marchaos/jest-mock-extended - its such helper libraries im concerned about.

thecopy··on Vitest vs. Jest
Im interested if anyone has experience using node's native test runner in a non-trivial project?

We are not using the module mocks from Jest in our project and a quick PoC showed significant (3x) speed improvement, but i am worried about the battle-tested:ness.

>proprietary shitware

Is this shitware? It seems to be very high quality code

thecopy··on GitHub cuts AI deals with Google, Anthropic
Great news! This can only mean better suggestions.

I expected little from Copilot, but now i find it indispensible. It is such a productivity multiplier.

thecopy··on New iMac with M4
For what its worth, I am extremely satisfied with my Studio Display. The 5K resolution makes 2x pixel perfect scaling look great, built in webcam which fantatic for meetings, good speakers, and charges the MacBook Pro with the same cable, and acts as an USB-C hub.
thecopy··on Git-absorb: Git commit –fixup, but automatic
Perhaps i misunderstood it... looks to me like squashing commits and would require a force push, which would have this effect.
thecopy··on Git-absorb: Git commit –fixup, but automatic
If i understand this will break "changes since my last review" and disconnect PR review comments in GitHub?
thecopy··on Ask HN: Platform for 11 year old to create video games?
When i was young i started with Power Point too, then i started using "The Games Factory" from Clickteam. I think thats what started my programming path.

thecopy··on Elon Musk Shares Manipulated Harris Video, in Seeming Violation of X's Policies
My fyp is overflowing with alt right low quality posts. It started abruptly 2 months ago. Until then it was very clean and relevant. I have given up marking the tweets as “not relevant”. My fyp is now 80% alt right trolls and short facebook style video clips
thecopy··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
TypeScript evolves independent of Node, and the syntax you can use depends on your `typescript` version in the `package.json`
thecopy··on Linus Torvalds adds arbitrary tabs to kernel code
>purely a choice of style

Sure, but could i not say the same of using any indentation at all?

thecopy··on ETag and HTTP Caching

thecopy··on Eight U.S. States Now Have Plans to Ban Sales of Gas-Powered Cars
It wont. I dont understand your point. Then buy a 1991 honda civic.
thecopy··on Eight U.S. States Now Have Plans to Ban Sales of Gas-Powered Cars
I think there is an investment aspect to this. Without a certainty that demand will increase in a significant way the power grid wont see investment. By forcing EVs, power companies know that demand will go up in the future enabling easier investment decisions

thecopy··on 2.7M Brits still use a 3G only handset
4G has been rock solid for me since 2010 (I dont use 5G due to battery reasons) - in Sweden/Switzerland
thecopy··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
My point is that as individuals we are not OK with making individual sacrifices if the neighbour does not have to. If everyone makes the same sacrifice we are OK with it, see GP's point.

My feeling is that any individual is OK with sacrifice as long as they are not unfairly disadvantaged relavitely to their society/neighbours.

For example: i would not be willing to pay more income tax unless this applied for everyone; even if i wanted higher income taxes.

thecopy··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
That is naive. Humans are selfish, we need to accept this and adapt our poicies accordingly - as we have historically.
thecopy··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
This is a fundamental dynamic of human behaviour. To deny this is detrimental to the goal of reducing climate change and improving the environment we live in.

This is why i think we need global policy changes and regulation to achieve the commonly beneficial goals.

thecopy··on Notes on the Ivory Coast
This is a disingenious comment, imo. The payment you are referring to payed in the early 1800:s.

>France demanded payment from Haiti for recognition of its independence in the early 19th century. The demand for reparations was made shortly after Haiti declared independence in 1804 following a successful revolt against French colonial rule. The negotiations and the subsequent agreement for reparations occurred between 1825 and 1838.

thecopy··on Firefox Sync actually works
