thecleaner··on An Optimization That's Impossible in Rust
How much time would it take to port RocksDB in Rust hypothetically.
thecleaner··on Escaping from Anaconda's Stranglehold on macOS
Install python from source into a directory that does not need sudo. Use poetry init and poetry install to do the rest. Poetry manages the environment itself. I have been using this setup for a while and it works quite well.
thecleaner··on Google Closure Library has been archived
Whats the goog.framework.of.choice these days ? For those who haven't written closure code - whats the framework of choice at google these days?
thecleaner··on Retiring from the Rust for Linux Project – Wedson Almeida Filho
Who was the angry guy who was shouting ?
thecleaner··on Just use fucking paper, man
I mean I use remember the milk for remembering things, something computers are great at. Then I just make little slots in my calendar where I do one todo item. If something is unclear, I make a todo item to generate something actionable. All my meetings sync automatically with an app which creates alarms for everything. So far this system has worked great. I still use paper if I want to batch stuff and finish related items quickly.
thecleaner··on YC is doing a first ever Fall batch – applications due by 8/27
I love YC and how generous they are with their knowledge and tools. Never did it and wont be applying but just wanted to say that the Dalton + Michael videos make me calm somehow. Not sure why.
thecleaner··on Google transfers 1.2 EB of data every day using Effingo
Its applicable if the services have different teams and different infra requirements. Its hard to create a ton of sphaghetti when integration is atleast a network hop away. There's some friction to being dependent on too much stuff.
thecleaner··on Boeing's Starliner proves better at torching cash than reaching orbit
What makes AirBus better than boeing at making aircrafts ? Boeing just seems to be going down hill. Much like their aircrafts.
thecleaner··on Boeing's Starliner proves better at torching cash than reaching orbit
Interesting. Examples ? I think its good to be aware of these blindspots.
thecleaner··on Boeing's Starliner proves better at torching cash than reaching orbit
Dont put accountants in charge of engineering heavy companies.
thecleaner··on How HashiCorp evolved its cloud infrastructure
When its no longer profitable to write code, you write newsletters about writing code.
thecleaner··on Launch HN: Roame (YC S23) – Flight search engine for your credit card points
I signed up for Star Alliance which is typically linked to your user account. Atleast for Qatar airways I've had issues with redeeming because sign-in is not reliable. Most of the time I just don't want to go through the rather tedious sign-in process for most airlines. I've also traveled with JetBlue where I found the process was a lot smoother. Not sure if I am just bad with money / lazy.
thecleaner··on Launch HN: Roame (YC S23) – Flight search engine for your credit card points
I am happy simply because this isnt AI this-that. Congrats on the launch, will definitely use as I am someone who frequently forgets that points exist. For me, Qatar or any of the mid-east carriers have been the worst since their websites are awful.
thecleaner··on There's No Guarantee AI Will Ever Be Profitable
OpenAI can be profitable, especially in the case where they make their own hardware because then the only cost that they have to pay is the energy cost and don't have to worry about cost of renting a GPU. And if they have very good hardware to run AI models they don't even have to worry about building their own models anymore. They can just use one of the open source one's like LLama or mistral and be done with it.
thecleaner··on Ask HN: Databases that use SQL but are usage based like DynamoDB?
DynamoDB has the concept of CUs ( compute units ) which are of two types - RCU.(read compute unit) and WCU (write compute unit). You pay for the CUs that are used + charges for storage. Each operation consumes certain number of CUs. You pay for the CUs used. So something like that but for SQL and hopefully compatible with the standard.
thecleaner··on Will Figma become an awkward middle ground?
Genuinely curious for those looking to design closer to code - doesnt Webflow fit the bill ?
thecleaner··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
The work that you do is also different. The level of engg at your avg startup never evolves beyond CRUD shit shovelling. At FAANG its a different story at virtually all levels.

For example at your avg startups you worry about which latest GraphQL technology to learn. As Staff at a FAANG you realize how the graphQL engines work and can pretty much critique the design choices made in each. A Staff at avg startup is more like L5 at Google or L6 at Amazon.

Having said that, relaize that if you become that good at the craft, its better to found a tech startup. Take the example of DGraph if you are looking for a blueprint. You have got founders advantage because of your deep expertise. And tbh, its in the Faang's interest to keep you on the payroll.

thecleaner··on Node.js Is Here to Stay
I have to ask why is this article necessary ? Nobody is deleting nodejs anyway.
thecleaner··on Garage: Open-Source Distributed Object Storage
Ist this formally verified by any chance ? I feel like there's space where formal designs could be expressed in TLA+ such that its easier for the community to keep track of the design.
thecleaner··on The saddest "Just Ship It" story ever (2020)
But what's the problem that is being solved with a productivity app ? I actually use a spreadsheet program for this and it does a better job than most apps. I don't it matters what "the vision" is really.
thecleaner··on Proton launches its own version of Google Docs
Wonder why you don't use Google Docs if they do the job ?
thecleaner··on What is 'AI washing' and why is it a problem?
I am not sure why this comment was downvoted. I just discovered The Diplomat thanks to this and I paid the 80 bucks for the full sub. Haha, thank you.
thecleaner··on Eplot: A new package for making charts in Emacs
Thats some solid hacking right there. Esp yhe gradient part . Also given that these plots are svg means they can the imported to latex or a web browser. The first option makes it a solid contender for doing plots that need embedding in papers. Congratulations, some good results here.
thecleaner··on Terence Tao on proof checkers and AI programs
Does Lean work with linear slgebra proofs ?
thecleaner··on Launch HN: Overwatch (YC S22): OSINT platform for cyber and fraud risk
Wow. Thats a really fresh concept and an important need. Congrats on the launch.
thecleaner··on Understanding the neuroscience behind burnout (2022)
This is such an amazing write up. Thank you so much for sharing ! Good luck to you.
thecleaner··on Llamanet: Zero-setup, zero-dependency OpenAI replacement powered by llama.cpp
OpenAI replacement ? Some really tall claims there. What's the context length for this setup ? And any latency numbers ? If this really is what it says it is, you should shout these numbers.
thecleaner··on Show HN: I do nothing in my dayjob for 95% of the Time so I made this
one of the reviews is doesnt work. Is it a troll or is it supposed to fail every once a while ?
thecleaner··on Parsing JSON Is a Minefield (2018)
Btw if we use parser generators like antlr for this purpose, is it still a minefield ? Can someone point some vulnerabilities I can study ?
thecleaner··on Don't study or work on LLMs
You certainly dont need to study LLMs for it.
