thecleaner··on You're not a senior engineer until you've worked on a legacy project (2023)
> it also builds self-esteem.

Well crafted dig.

thecleaner··on It's not just AI. China's medicines are surprising the world, too
Valid question. Its quite possible there's a future where only "favoured pharmaceutical company" can distribute these drugs in the US to protect against woke left liberals who might contaminate these meds with drugs that might turn your son gay. :)
thecleaner··on I set my phone to 'do not disturb' three years ago – and have never looked back
I just block all notifications. The only things that go through are Whatsapp and calls. Even that is limited to a few people. All group notifs are turned off. Honestly i've got no idea why people would check random notifications
thecleaner··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing a North Carolina warehouse
Wasnt Teamsters also the notorious shipbuilders union as well ?
thecleaner··on Getter-Setter Pattern Considered Harmful
This is weird. I use getter/setter regularly for DynamoDB backed DTOs. This helps catch setters at the source of a problem before it gets persisted. Also the exceptions will help pinpoint code paths where these things can happen.
thecleaner··on AI Is Stifling Tech Adoption
Shove the docs as context. Gemini has 2m context length.
thecleaner··on Jeep Introduces Pop-Up Ads That Appear Every Time You Stop
If these are high quality, I am all for these. Just not another damn celeb shilling their stupid fucking perfumes.
thecleaner··on Show HN: Built A Better Shopify (that's not a rip off)
Very interesting. Shopify also provides a backend and APIs associated with it. Is that included ? Also how does it compare to WooCommerce ?
thecleaner··on Machine Learning in Production (CMU Course)
Quite right. Its just software engineering with a fancy name. This work classification is only slightly better thought out than DevOps. In most companies ML engineers are engineers that understand software and some parts of ML and in best cases are good at both, in worst cases are terrible at both.
thecleaner··on Machine Learning in Production (CMU Course)
Maybe I am underestimating the course complexity but this sounds like an entry level course. Up until Model explanability tools, most of the stuff looks fairly straightforward tbh. Although, they're using industry standard tools for most use-cases which is good I think.
thecleaner··on Machine Learning in Production (CMU Course)
Nothing fancy. The core principles are the same, you'll need to adapt them depending upon the kind workload changes that ML introduces. For most ML systems 1. Storage infra: assuming storage for models or even data, use any blob storage like S3. Or a shared networked file system like EFS, Lustre etc. 2. Networking: if you're talking about networking using large GPUs, I am not aware of any definitive resource on this. 3. Scheduling: This is honestly a solved problem at this point, anything works - write your own coordinator that periodically runs docker image base jobs (you can hook one up quite quickly using some sort of system for metadata and triggers powered by message queuing), use Airflow, use AWS Batch for large scale jobs.

You missed model serving (I think ?). Tough and latency sensitive esp for recommender systems. Prone to latency spikes, traffic spikes. Even with a well-written Python code you can run into limitations quite quickly.

thecleaner··on YC Graveyard: 821 inactive Y Combinator startups
Hmm. Charge high, better profit margins. To me that sounds exactly like the sort of thing a startup should do. Maybe my instincts are off.
thecleaner··on YC Graveyard: 821 inactive Y Combinator startups
Wth. Blume benefits sounds like a really useful thing ? Wonder what happened.
thecleaner··on Amazon UK to stop selling Bloomsbury's books
Who cares ? I go to Waterstones anyways.
thecleaner··on “The Traitors”, a reality TV show, offers a useful economics lesson
What is the economics lesson though ? I figured they were talking about bounded rationality which the article touches upon in the last paragraph. But it would've been nice to get some confirmation within the article itself.
thecleaner··on After 3 Years, I Failed. Here's All My Startup's Code
Remarkable show of persistence. Honestly, I really like that the Repo is as-is. Congratulations on the journey, hope you learnt a ton. PS - you built some of your static content on Docusaurus, a Meta open source project. They're hiring like crazy. Maybe you get to work on that one.
thecleaner··on AI company trolls San Francisco with billboards saying "stop hiring humans"
Cool. Lets move on now. I found Quanta's developments in computer science article more interesting.
thecleaner··on Ask HN: How can I grow as an engineer without good seniors to learn from?
Solve problems and pretend you are senior. You'll stumble, fall, make mistakes but that's the best learning you can hope for.
thecleaner··on Engineers do not get to make startup mistakes when they build ledgers
I guess the lesson here is to not bank with an a16z company. I have been using Wise for years. Very very happy.
thecleaner··on Denmark will plant 1B trees and convert 10% of farmland into forest
How will it impact food supply ?
thecleaner··on The size of BYD's factory
Most of this is land being dug up, we don't know what it will be used for. Could just be holding area for stock, which is not a good thing. Premature to comment on the scale of BYD's factory.
thecleaner··on Amazon S3 now supports the ability to append data to an object
I don't understand the bashing in the comments. I image this is a tough distributed systems challenge (as with anything S3). Of course AWS is charging more since they've cracked it.

Does anybody know if appending still has that 5TB file limit ?

thecleaner··on FireDucks: Pandas but Faster
Sure but single node performance. This makes it not very useful IMO since quite a few data science folks work with Hadoop clusters or Snowflake clusters or DataBricks where data is distributed and querying is handled by Spark executors.
thecleaner··on Ask HN: How to learn software development concepts crucial for senior roles?
+1 for DDIA. that book helped mee ed hrow to senior.
thecleaner··on Using BenQ's latest 32" 4k monitor (RD320U) which is aimed at programming
I have a 27inch Phillips 4K and its pretty good. Comes at a price point of 400 bucks though, ast I checked.
thecleaner··on GPTs Are Maxed Out
Very poor F1 score if we're to bring ML into it.
thecleaner··on A hot day, a fan provides little benefit when the temperature exceeds 35°C
Its because of thermodynamics. When you use fans in an area that doesn't have other external circulation, you introduce more energy into the system. This will increase increase temperature. From personal experience for a closed room, fans don't help if temperature even reaches 27degC. If the temperature outside exceeds 35 degC or basically any comfortable temperature, the result will depend on humidity levels. If you are sweating, it will help because of evaporation - some energy is absorbed for the phase change. If its really dry, a fan will only make it worse.
thecleaner··on Apple threatened workers over their talk about pay and remote work, feds charge
I am going to pay these folks just because they broke this story.
thecleaner··on Spann: Highly-Efficient Billion-Scale Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search (2021)
What's the hypothesis and the test statistic ?
thecleaner··on My Time Working at Stripe
I kinda applaud OP for sharing their personal story. However, I personally never understood why people give a shit about objectives which aren't tied to business objectives. I mean the build improvement of 10x is great, but so what ?

Also, Stripe is barely profitable. As an engineer in big tech, I wouldn't even consider applying. You're better off targeting Principal engineer at Big Tech since it implies doing some really ground breaking software work. At that point, you probably don't have to worry about middle management and that bs. Outside the big 4 I had an experience where the manager read a Software engineering management book and would follow the things down to the letter like a superstition. It was a stupid exchange but ChatGPT really helped build my repository of meaningless corporate soeak. I find it to be a very useful skill.
