thebluesky··on IntelliJ IDEA 12 Wins Jolt Award for Coding Tools 2013
Netbeans started getting some major traction around the 2005 - 2007 timeframe, but seems to have lost ground since the Oracle takeover. Limited support for Ruby/JRuby and virtually non-existent Scala support caused me to ditch it after many years of use.

Looking forward to the new language features and performance improvements :)

+1 for Spring not aging well

The only thing that makes me happy in the Java world lately is Scala. It has it's flaws but is much more pleasant that old school Java.

This article would have received a bit more respect if it had been a bit more subtle about the C# cheerleading.

thebluesky··on Reasons to be excited about Java in 2013
Many of the folks using Scala are experienced Java developers, your posts seem to be based on personal speculation rather than actual facts.
thebluesky··on Reasons to be excited about Java in 2013
I only develop on Linux, think you got confused by the way I phrased it. I meant that hardly anyone uses the OpenJDK package, not that hardly anyone uses Linux.
thebluesky··on Reasons to be excited about Java in 2013
The gains for this approach are usually marginal as disk IO is expensive vs generating code in memory using the JIT.
thebluesky··on Reasons to be excited about Java in 2013
In all seriousness most Java devs. regard the OpenJDK package as "that weird jvm that comes with the OS that nobody actually uses". First thing we do is download the latest JDK from Sunoracle.
thebluesky··on Reasons to be excited about Java in 2013
Scala provides tail call optimization and invoke dynamic has been in the JVM for years (since JDK7). The JVM is also considerably faster than the CLR and unlike Mono is heavily used in industry.
thebluesky··on Reasons to be excited about Java in 2013
My thoughts exactly. Scala seems to be the JVM language gaining the most traction at the moment. The JVM is an extremely impressive piece of engineering. Very reliable, great tooling and it's the fastest VM out there for any language.

After 17 years of Java the language many Java devs. have built up skills around the JVM and java class libraries. Many of us are now looking for a more modern language which lets us leverage our existing knowledge. Scala + friends are pretty hard to ignore these days.

thebluesky··on Scala 2.10 now available
IntelliJ does do autoimport. I have very occasionally seen IntelliJ not offer an import suggestion for a class I have used, but overall it's an extremely polished experience.
thebluesky··on Reasons to be excited about Java in 2013
I can't speak to the other languages, but Scala is definitely being used pretty heavily in a number of pretty major back-end systems for stock trading, cloud computing, banking and successful startups like Twitter, Foursquare, Tumblr, Quora etc.
thebluesky··on Scala 2.10 now available
I'm really looking forward to using 2.10 now that it's (finally!) final. Over the last year it's been really interesting to see Scala popping up all over the place. One of the interesting data points is that downloads of the Scala plugin for IntelliJ have crossed the 350,000 mark. I have yet to encounter anyone who wants to go back to Java after having used Scala for a project. For many of us it's the first language that's a viable successor to Java.
thebluesky··on Scala 2.10 now available
Scalac 500-1000 lines per second according to the link, with a startup time of about 4-8 seconds. Startup time can be worked around with zinc/fsc/nailgun
thebluesky··on View of Scala from Java
Most folks find that the IntelliJ Scala plugin is the best tool rather than Eclipse.
thebluesky··on View of Scala from Java
That's what nailgun and zinc are for...

See what the Jetbrains guys are currently using: http://blog.jetbrains.com/scala/2012/12/28/a-new-way-to-comp...

thebluesky··on View of Scala from Java
Types for method and constructor parameters are always explicitly specified. Type inference generally used for local variables and method return types. This strikes a good balance between having no type info (e.g. python) and having type info for everything (java). The convention in Scala is to specify the return type of a method if the return type is complex.

In practice the type which is inferred is pretty obvious: val x = 800 vs. val x: Int = 800

Maybe reassuring folks that the 24 hour counter will only start once the site is functioning again would go a long way towards stopping folks from hitting F5 so much...
thebluesky··on A 12-year-old bug in JDK, still out there leaking memory
JDK 6 is EOL 2 months from now: https://blogs.oracle.com/henrik/entry/java_6_eol_h_h

It's also pretty rare for folks to use that http client. It's normally the case that an apache commons or netty http client is used.

thebluesky··on A 12-year-old bug in JDK, still out there leaking memory
As indicated in the article it's not still "out to get you" since it was fixed in March 2011.

From the bug report: Submit Date: 2010-12-22 Resolved Date: 2011-03-10 That's less than 3 months.

thebluesky··on IntelliJ IDEA 12 Released
Your description of Eclipse hits the nail on the head. +1 For the comment on updating yourself into a corner. Eclipse plugins make it insanely easy to shoot yourself in the foot and get the IDE into an unusable state. Eclipse has an amazing variety of plugins, but sadly 99.9% of eclipse plugins give the other 0.1% a bad name.

From what I've seen many folks have started using IntelliJ due to the top-notch Scala plugin which Jetbrains provides for free.

Also check out: http://blog.typesafe.com/free-pdf-from-typesafe-scala-for-th... In my experience most people find that the best introduction.
thebluesky··on Graham’s Guide to Learning Scala
Scala takes more time to learn, but targets a different audience. Scala runs on the JVM which lets you leverage Java libraries etc. For long-running apps Scala is usually faster than Go, but will use more memory than Go.
thebluesky··on Graham’s Guide to Learning Scala
The preferred way of launching an app in Scala is as follows:

  object HelloWorld extends App {
    println("Hello, world!")
  }
Rather than manually creating a main method, as is done in the OP blog.

It's also possible to simply write:

  println("Hello World")
and that would be the entire app, but the preferred way of doing things is to extend App
