theblueadept111··on Fix Your Inaccurate Google Analytics Bounce Rate and Time on Site
If google is using bounce rate as a signal for page ranking, this advice is very useful for people who have a low bounce rate simply because all the information is on a single page, or because the page uses dynamic html to refresh the content as the user digs deeper into the app.
theblueadept111··on Github is Your New Resume
"Your first job should be at an organization that embraces open-source and lets you contribute to existing projects. Other companies simply don’t deserve you."

Oh, I had to laugh at that. Good luck explaining that one to the wife. I'm sorry honey, the pay way great, the benefits were good, there was an excellent health plan and even a stock buy-in option.... if ONLY they had agreed to embrace open source so I could work there.

Speak for yourself. Will work for cleavage.
theblueadept111··on Google+ needs to pass more than the geek test
"It felt magical because Facebook caught on like wildfire like only a non-geek tool could."

internet. world wide web. I rest my case.

Would it be considered bad taste to ask him for an invite?
theblueadept111··on Michael Krigsman: Recommends Enterprises "discontinue use of" Dropbox
I encrypt anything important before I upload it to Dropbox, and I didn't have to read their terms of service to take that precaution. It's always good to be paranoid about your data, but it's idiotic to suggest that anyone discontinue use of Dropbox because they _might_ scan your files someday to provide you with targeted advertising.

The article is definitely fear mongering bullshit. IMO Dropbox is doing a great job. It's simply one the most useful FREE apps out there, and my only feedback for Dropbox is "thank you".

theblueadept111··on Machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, within a few decades.
Machine intelligence will soon diverge from Kurzweil's hyper-optimistic predictions and timetables so dramatically that he won't be able to gloss over it any longer.

As for where AI stands today, I'd say we're not even at the level of simulating a jellyfish, or even a single cell. Simulated protein folding is still a pipe-dream for our fastest supercomputers, nevermind simulating the intelligence of a sentient being.

On top of that, algorithmic systems as we understand them may be a shallow model of what it means to have 'human intelligence'. How do you design a circuit that feels pain, or know when you've succeeded?

theblueadept111··on Anyone working at Facebook: what happening at Facebook on Google+?
You got me, I'm a google+ engineer.

I don't always pretend to work for Facebook...

but when I do I'm an arrogant prick.

theblueadept111··on Anyone working at Facebook: what happening at Facebook on Google+?
My opinions are my own and I can't speak for Facebook as a whole (or in any capacity, really, which is why this will forever remain an anonymous post).

I think Google will gain some traction initially, but what we're working on in my group is light years ahead of the Facebook you see and use today, and probably not the same direction that Google is (or can be) heading.

Yes, we've had our stumbles with privacy, but will Google be any better? Any legitimate complaints that I've heard are either something we're resolving or is an inherent problem that any social networking site will face.

Am I worried about attrition of users as Google ramps up? Not really. It's too much work to maintain multiple social networking accounts and at the end of the day, all your profile are belong to us.

theblueadept111··on Mark Zuckerberg's profile on Google+
No, stating the obvious would be: Of course he wants to see what his competition looks like first hand, and you can't test a social network without networking with people who know who you actually are.

Is he supposed to slink around like a frightened thief? No, he'd join, steal the good ideas, and say "so long and thanks for all the fish"... like a Boss.

theblueadept111··on I quit my 100k a year job to learn programming from scratch. Ask me anything.
Hi, I'm a novice in your field. I've read about your field in the popular media, and have romantic notions about becoming extremely successful in your field, even though I have 8 years less experience than even a recent graduate. Let me tell you some cliche ideas I've summarized from reading blogs, even though you probably have decades or more experience than I do. Ok, now go ahead and ask me ANYTHING. Anything at all!
theblueadept111··on Tell HN: I will build a functioning prototype of your idea in 1 week for $500
I'm looking for someone that can make me something like a simple version of facebook, but the thing is that instead of linking people to their friends, it would link them to their enemies. An anti-social network. I think if it even gets half the users of faceboook, it will be a huge success.

"Keep your fiends close but your enemies closer." That should be the tagline, and it should be black.... dark colors. Red or white fonts, maybe a little animation of flames, like in hell. (Because who doesn't want their enemies to burn in hell.. amiright?)

But the key thing, ok this is mint... is that people will have to pay to sign up. So money will be rolling in as it grows. And you would get paid as the money comes in, rather than getting screwed with just $500 up front. I would cut you in, is what I'm saying, and you'd cash out l8er.

Let's talk.

theblueadept111··on Why I Am An Anarchist
I think the humans are hard-wired to view/organize each other into hierarchies. All social interaction is based on the currency of hierarchical standing to some degree. You can't even have a disagreement with someone without it being interpreted as a 'challenge' to their standing. So coercion isn't really the best way to explain why one person (strong) dominates another (weak). Yes, strength determines the outcome, but the reason for the entire dance is to establish the hierarchy.

I don't believe you can have any form of "anarchy" (or any other social system) where people do not struggle to form a hierarchy, because that's what it means to be human, for better or worse.

theblueadept111··on Why I Am An Anarchist
To my mind, there is nothing such as "anarchism" except what you see when you look around you, wherever you are. The strong dominate the weak, and when sufficiently organized, they are called "the government". You can't "switch" to anarchy because you can't escape it in the first place. Government is an emergent property of a self-organizing society.
theblueadept111··on Why I Am An Anarchist
This article explain why the author calls himself an anarchist, but not what he defines "anarchist" to mean. It is simply someone who opposes any form of state government? Even if the majority of the people want state government? If so, by what means would the author seek to impose anarchy against the will of people, and how would that be better than the problems of democracy that he rails against?
theblueadept111··on Ask HN: When was your "ah-ha" moment when learning how to program?
X = X + 1 was my earliest 'aha' moment. At first it stumped me... there is absolutely no value X such that X = X + 1, so how on earth can this be a valid line of computer code? It really pissed me off.
