thebigwinning··on The Bay Area German bar that brought down Apple’s famed iPhone security
You owe them nothing and the guilt you feel is an exploitation of your courtesy.
thebigwinning··on Eastern philosophy says there is no “self” – science agrees
It's a hard earned comment from experience unfortunately.
thebigwinning··on Eastern philosophy says there is no “self” – science agrees
There are some ideas only a PhD philosopher can convince themselves of.

If a lens reveals a truth about reality isn't it true? Also I don't know what artificial distinction you're making between this and a religious belief. That's what all religions do.
thebigwinning··on OpenMW: Open-source TES3: Morrowind reimplementation
Alternatively, I think if you just compared accomplishments of population with families vs without you would not be impressed.

Its a tiny population that would turn less responsibility into more productive output.

(I for one would probably not consider making fallout mods a great tradeoff, and that's probably better use of time than most)

thebigwinning··on Mark Zuckerberg on Apple’s Vision Pro headset
If you take this reasoning further you will realize you don't actually need any technology in your life.
thebigwinning··on Shreddit is a Python program to remove all your Reddit comments
It works with a one line fix found in the issues.

We are at least raising the cost of them storing and sorting through versions then.
thebigwinning··on Math has changed the shape of gerrymandering
> A location with a thousand voters turning out a million votes

Easy to detect for a small town, not for a big city, where there are literally millions but who knows how many actually vote. In fact I could cite the exact kinds of statistical reasoning for certain counties in the recent election, but you wouldn't accept that.

thebigwinning··on HashiCorp just let go 8%
The irony here is incredible. Diversity initiatives often replace traditional European or male names to suggest more kinds of people being involved. But you could tell that OP was being unrealistic.

> Cheating with elections is so much easier with district voting than proportional representation.

It's the opposite. A single compromised location can tip a in a national popular election. It almost becomes an arms race of cheating.

With district based they can only affect their district.

thebigwinning··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
Everyone wants cheaper stuff. The question is how to allocate limited resources.
thebigwinning··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
Why do they live in SF and further north if it's for weather?
thebigwinning··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
SF and further north are hardly nice weather locations.
thebigwinning··on Research Finds Women Are Advantaged in Being Hired in Academic Science
Since most of the older ones are men, I think the career prospects for non-minority men considering academia are grim (if academic careers aren't already).
thebigwinning··on Research Finds Women Are Advantaged in Being Hired in Academic Science
It's been their stated goal in academic hiring, so I don't think this is anything new.
thebigwinning··on VR optics and why IPD means too many things (2019)
Since we have a lot of theoretical science, it's easy to imagine everything is solved in engineering. But when you dig into a new application you learn there are tons of gaps in knowledge. There is theory to draw on, but you need to combine and resynthesize to make it into something that works.

I have had experiences translating a professional model (similar to optometry prescriptions) and learn the model isn't described well enough to write in software.

thebigwinning··on Pro-cash movement warns that people could be losing more than they bargained for
Or scams on eBay
thebigwinning··on Pro-cash movement warns that people could be losing more than they bargained for
I agree. It was more convenient to rob cash which is fungible.

But I actually wonder if the rewards are higher today, with everyone carrying >$1000 phones.

thebigwinning··on Pro-cash movement warns that people could be losing more than they bargained for
This might have something to do with an increase in surveillance and criminal record keeping.
thebigwinning··on Pro-cash movement warns that people could be losing more than they bargained for
That security is easy to see. The cyber security and fraud protections on credit card networks are expensive and not visible.
thebigwinning··on C++17’s useful features for embedded systems
> Of course it's allowed,

It's not. If you to use a function in a constexpr context then it will complain it needs to be marked as such. So the API creator needs to label every function in case a client wants to use it.

thebigwinning··on Same Stop: Life after 26 years as a programmer for Apple
In the 80s and 90s CS was often seen as a fallback if you couldn't do well in EE.
thebigwinning··on How much does it cost to develop and manufacture an electronic product? (2022)
I suppose it depends on the product thermostats? watches? ovens?. The lifecycle of an unmaintained iOS app is about 18 months. So that's what we are comparing.

Most of the apps I have purchased in the past no longer honor it and have switched to a subscription because it doesn't pay for yearly maintenance.

thebigwinning··on C++17’s useful features for embedded systems
What if it was always allowed to do compile time, but you could add a keyword to assert it did (like force-inline).

That way you get benefits by default. Whereas right now it's not allowed to.

thebigwinning··on How much does it cost to develop and manufacture an electronic product? (2022)
Simple circuits are efficient and last forever.
thebigwinning··on Former Dolphin team member addresses Steam/Valve’s takedown of Dolphin emulator
Whether they are or not, it would be foolish to make any move that suggests they don't care about IP. That's how their partners make money on Steam.
thebigwinning··on Why I Left Rust
Do you want to try addressing any of the claims or ideas you disagree with? I only see name calling here.
thebigwinning··on TV doctors say annual checkups save lives – real doctors call bullshit (2016)
The behavior you're describing is clearly an effort to economize use of doctors time. Since there is a cartel controlling salaries hospitals are doing everything legally possible to maximize their usage and shift work to cheaper labor.
thebigwinning··on Former Dolphin team member addresses Steam/Valve’s takedown of Dolphin emulator
How would their partners feel about how they treat others intellectual property?
