thebigspacefuck··on Google Is Winning on Every AI Front
There’s a Gemini app on mobile but if you’re on desktop use https://aistudio.google.com. They are behind in this aspect, hopefully they release a desktop app with MCP.

If you’re not using something like Cline or Cursor you should give them a try.

I haven’t found any OpenAI models good for agentic coding. o3-mini and 4o were both worse than 3.5 Sonnet. 3.7 and Gemini 2.5 Pro both seem be better than 3.5. I still use 4o with search as my primary reference model though.

thebigspacefuck··on Show HN: We made an MCP server so Cursor can debug Node.js on its own
MCP really shines with a tool like Cline, Roo Code, or Cursor’s agent mode where an agent is writing code for you and needs access to tools. Some I’ve used successfully are Sentry for fixing errors or Figma for implementing a design. Most MCP servers are something you set up and run locally. It lets you set up auth once across tasks and configure which actions/tools are auto-approved so your agent can have higher autonomy during tasks. If you haven’t used Cursor or Cline you should give them a try.

thebigspacefuck··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
I don't think people are getting "destroyed", they are just bored and want to find something else, but there are factors keeping them in the same place. Interviewing is hard, they may have a lot of stock vesting, the economy is bad, or their life situation makes it inconvenient, etc.
thebigspacefuck··on Mark Zuckerberg says AI could soon do the work of Meta's midlevel engineers
What are you doing to prepare?

My thoughts are:

I might as well enjoy life now since the future me will need no savings as the age of abundance will take care of me.

I might switch careers to accelerate this future. Whatever I’m working on now isn’t that important because 5 years from now it will be done by AGI if this is brought about.

I should stake a claim in the AGI future. Own or invest in a company that will increase in value given this future.

I could start preparing by switching careers. Maybe becoming a product manager or manager that manages AGI for a business or picking a career that AGI can’t do. Maybe an electrician or doctor or plumber. But is anything safe?

Prepare for the Terminator future. Find the weakness in machines and figure out how to destroy them.

Do you have a source for this? The linked study claims it has potential.
thebigspacefuck··on Bill requiring US agencies to share source code with each other becomes law
I’ve heard some contractors intentionally license source code they provide in a way that it can’t be reused and if it can only if they provide it to you again, so the government basically pays for the same code over and over. Even if it’s highly reusable. Maybe this will help with that?
thebigspacefuck··on Want to Remember Everything You Learn? Surrender to This Algorithm (2008)
TLDR spacing out the time when you are asked to recall things helps you remember (recall) them better. There’s an app called supermemo to help with this.

Since the article’s from 2008, you may be wondering what happened to this software, so supermemo is available on the App Store, but is focused on language and not incredibly popular, there’s also a desktop version for windows 10. Anki decks offer the same spaced repetition learning as well and seem to have become more popular so may serve as a replacement.

YouTube already had a shooting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YouTube_headquarters_shooting

SV may be different though in that most cases you are opting in and most people agree that the products improve their life. If you feel otherwise don’t buy it. Someone can still decide that technology is bad and go on a bombing campaign like the unabomber, but we haven’t seen much support for that approach, instead questioning his sanity. I think the YT shooter fell on the crazy side of the scale in public opinion as well.

With health insurance, you are forced to buy it or have little choice on which company you go with when it’s provided through your employer.

I guess if you’re forced out of a job because of AI or something that’s fair. I always thought the best argument for UBI was if you take all of our jobs and give us nothing in return, we can make your life a living hell.

thebigspacefuck··on Python type hints may not be not for me in practice
I believe VSCode by default uses pyright which is fast but shitty in that it gives a lot of false positives. If you want the most correct typing experience, use mypy. Even then you may need a config.
thebigspacefuck··on Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday
Most companies are like this in my experience. You have some default rotation going out to forever and as part of planning vacation you check whether the time you are requesting is when you're scheduled for on-call and if so ask if someone else is available to swap on-call. If you can't find someone to cover, you raise to your manager and either they'll cover it or find someone else to cover.
thebigspacefuck··on Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday
On a past team I set up on-call to be:

- Mon/Tue - Wed/Thu - Fri - Sat/Sun

Original reason for this schedule was that on-call was paid by days per quarter in a tiered system so this guaranteed that all members got the 5% on-call for 10 days/quarter rather than one person hitting 9 days and dropping to 3%, but I stand by this as a better on-call rotation.

The number of people does need to be not wholly divisible so the days rotate so if you run into this you can combine Fri into Sat/Sun or break Sat/Sun apart. It’s a bit complex to set up but the mental impact of on-call is greatly reduced and if you need a week for vacation you can much more easily find someone to cover your shift for a couple days in a nearby week rather than ending up with 2 weeks back to back 6 weeks from now. And if you pull a weekend you get the week off rather than losing your weekend to on-call and going into a work week still on-call.

thebigspacefuck··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Recently there’s been an influx of illegal immigrants from Venezuela including some associated with Tren de Aragua that have been highly publicized and politicized. While most people do want America to be a melting pot of people from everywhere, whether you want your borders so wide open to allow criminals and gangs to sneak in is another question, and also probably something we all agree on, but in this case one candidate has been in power and has appeared to have not solved the problems.

I’ve recently gone back to search/stack overflow and it’s amazing. I search a few words and find exactly what I’m looking for in milliseconds. Relevant documentation comes up as well. I scan the results and know immediately if it’s what I need.

With ChatGPT I’m waiting seconds or even 10+ seconds for a response, it can be 100% wrong and I then have to readjust my question or point out how it’s wrong which takes me a while.
