thearrow··on The Religion of Speed
Felt this in my bones. It’s painful how accurately this describes my current work situation. The pressure comes from the top - leaders that have no idea what they want but they want _something_ to happen NOW. This has only gotten worse with the recent AI thoughtleadering because now the expectation has been seeded that every random brainwave should take at most one hour to implement (given enough tokens).

What can an IC do in an environment like this? If you slow down and attempt to find any clarity, you’re labeled as slow and ineffective. If you cave to the pressure and start slinging slop with the rest of them, you’re just perpetuating the spiral. Genuinely asking - how do others thread this needle?

thearrow··on GPT-5.6
I also feel this, and it also troubles me. Unfortunately, we may be in the minority on this site.

What the other replies seem to overlook is that it fundamentally changes the nature of the work - it’s not the next step in the evolution after an IDE, it is closer to an automated tractor, and yes that does make the farmer’s work trivial. Pressing a button and having the field get plowed is a very different experience than manually plowing a field yourself. I can no longer in good conscience say “I plowed that field”, because all I did was press a button. The tractor plowed that field.

Most people on this site seem to feel comfortable claiming “I plowed that field” after they pressed the button that started the automated tractor. Okay, you had the idea to press the button - but you didn’t actually do the work, you delegated it. Same end result, but a different lived experience. Now would I rather actually plow a field by hand or simply press a button? You can probably guess - but the two actions do differ greatly in the experience they bring me, and the feelings of satisfaction.

The test suite explicitly verifies the architecture and the data structures used? Depends on the suite, I suppose.
thearrow··on Some things just take time
A 50-year-old oak is not just lumber. The fact that you think these are equivalent is a hilarious, classic HN take.
thearrow··on High air pollution could diminish exercise benefits by half – study
Please note that air quality in an area varies dramatically over time. You are looking at a current snapshot with maps like that. The map linked below has his more historical data and I can see several _weeks_ this past year in my area (which currently has very good air quality) where the PM 2.5 weekly average exceeded 25ug/m^3.

https://map.purpleair.com/air-quality-raw-pm25

Localized phenomena like a neighbor starting a fire, up to the activity of nearby factories and power plants, up to national and global phenomena like wildfires and weather patterns, all have dramatic effects. Looking at an air quality map once and determining that you don’t have to think about air quality because you’re in the US is a mistake.

Exercise outdoors is a wonderful thing, obviously, but there are some days, even in the US, where you might think twice or even consider shifting your exercise to a different (less-polluted) time of the day.

Happy Valetudo user for years. It has great integration with Home Assistant, too. Highly recommend.
thearrow··on I used AI-powered calorie counting apps, and they were even worse than expected
Same. I was very skeptical when Macrofactor introduced this feature, but have since been incredibly impressed. The ability to give it text alongside a photo and then adjust the results (broken out by ingredients) are critical. I’ve also been taking pictures of food sitting on scales and it will take the measurement into account.

Seems like the Macrofactor team took their time developing this feature, as it felt like they were one of the last to roll it out, but the extra polish definitely shows and was worth the wait.

thearrow··on AI Ambivalence
Absolutely hilarious! I bet you forego using calculators and do all of your arithmetic by hand, too. Such a clever analogy!
thearrow··on AI Ambivalence
I love this essay, and it very closely mirrors my own feelings about the topic. Thanks for writing/sharing it.

I’m perpetually bamboozled by my fellow software engineering colleagues who insist on proudly shouting from the rooftops “Look at me, ma! I’m vibe coding!” as if it’s some badge of honor to see who can churn out the greatest quantities of shitcode the fastest and completely surrender any last scraps of their cognitive abilities to the best LLM provider of the current moment.

thearrow··on Jellyfin: The Free Software Media System
Echoing many of the other replies here - my experience has been very different (much better).

The web UI is fine and snappy and using Infuse on Apple TV is simply delightful.

The server uses file watchers to update the media library very quickly and is light on resources.

I don't need a recommendation engine because... it's my media library, presumably I added things to it that I want to watch.

And most importantly, it's open source and not likely to get enshittified in the near future like Plex.

thearrow··on Sega Saturn Architecture – A practical analysis (2021)
Nice analysis! I still have an original Sega Saturn I’ve owned since 1996 that I fire up occasionally for a nostalgia bomb. The thing still runs perfectly, same as the day I unboxed it! They may have ended up with quite a complex hardware architecture, but you’ve gotta love the reliability of the older consoles. The same cannot be said of the more modern consoles I’ve had over the years - burning themselves up or failing in other ways.

I’m also curious about the answer to this! I noticed similar behavior when opening a Typescript project. Enjoy the low latency, but I’d also appreciate accurate/helpful autocomplete suggestions.

thearrow··on Method for reducing coffee acidity
Coffee (even decaf) on an empty stomach can cause irritation for some people. It does for me.

You may also have a mild food sensitivity/allergy to coffee specifically. (Yes, testing for food sensitivity is somewhat problematic, and often indicates the presence of intestinal permeability.)

Which machine do you have? I’ve been looking for a decent countertop RO system without much success.
thearrow··on Ask HN: What search engines are you using?
Same. Due to the steady decline in the quality of Google results (even with an ad-blocker), I made the switch. Never thought I would pay for a search engine but my experience with Kagi has been absolutely worth it. I enjoy their product and am aligned with their philosophy so I’d love to see them succeed!

Just switched from https://pinboard.in to https://raindrop.io for this the other day. Migration went smoothly and so far the product is a bit nicer.
thearrow··on Release Date Update from the KSP2 Team
Love the original KSP! Sad as I am to hear about the delay, I’d rather they take the time needed to polish the game instead of rushing it out the door. Looking forward to the release next year!

thearrow··on Ask HN: Does anyone use an Oura sleep ring?
I’ve used one for a couple years, and it’s been fantastic. I only wear it at night as a sleep tracker.

After the first ~year and a half of use the battery would no longer hold a charge for more than one day, but I got in touch with their support team and they sent me a brand new ring for free, no questions asked. Now the battery lasts about a week.

In terms of its accuracy as a sleep tracker, obviously no consumer-grade wearable is going to be as good as a sleep study in a lab with full EEG, but I’ve seen anecdotal reports on Reddit of people comparing the Oura ring to the Dreem (an EEG headband), and saying that the two report surprisingly similar sleep phases and durations. It has seemed pretty accurate to me.

The real kicker for me was when I experienced an episode of De Quervain’s Thyroiditis earlier this year and it induced symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Over the course of a few weeks, I watched my resting heart rate overnight rise 60% above my baseline, I watched my HRV and sleep quality overnight plummet, I watched my body temperature increase - this correlated perfectly with frequent blood work that showed extremely elevated levels of thyroid hormones (free T3 and T4). My doctor started me on a beta blocker to control some of the worst symptoms. Gradually as my thyroid recovered, I could watch my overnight heart rate come down, and my HRV and body temperature return to baseline, and use the very accurate data from my ring to help taper off of the beta blocker (with my doctor’s approval).

That specific example aside, in normal daily use I find that the Oura helps me stay in better touch with my body - quantitatively measuring little differences in the status of my body in response to behaviors (food, exercise, alcohol, etc.) that I might otherwise not have even noticed. I highly recommend giving it a try.

thearrow··on Pulumi 3.0
Looks like this feature may have made it into v2.23.0, behind an env var: https://github.com/pulumi/pulumi/blob/v2.23.0/CHANGELOG.md#i...

Nice!

thearrow··on Pulumi 3.0
I think Pulimi is similar to terraform in that you can use multiple backends for state management, of which their "service" is one[0]. Meaning you could use the CLI backed by an S3 bucket for free.
