thearn4··on The day I accidentally killed a little boy
Agreed, I'm a father and found it to be a tough read.
thearn4··on Ask HN: Who hires mathematicians?
I have a PhD in mathematics, and have been working in the public sector (NASA) for a little under 10 years. A mix of interest in numerical linear algebra and software engineering helped me work into a niche in scientific computing and engineering software development.

Math is a very, very broad professional interest area. It branches into education, academia, and several areas in several industries around the senior year of an undergraduate program. I'd recommend undergraduate math majors try and get into co-op or paid internship programs as soon as they feel comfortable with it. But that's advice that I'd also give to ANY student these days.

Most technical organizations will hire folks with a mathematics background or entertain the though for a promising applicant. But there are almost no job titles out there called "Mathematician". That can be confusing to some.

thearn4··on Fewer toys at once may help toddlers to focus better and play more creatively
for what it's worth, we do it for fun too, not just for getting rid of the annoy-a-trons :)
thearn4··on Fewer toys at once may help toddlers to focus better and play more creatively
I've started a habit of sitting down with my son and taking them apart, screw by screw, piece by piece. He loves tools so he's into it 100%. The louder, brighter, and more annoying the y are, the more likely that they don't make it back together.
thearn4··on My 20-Year Experience of Software Development Methodologies
Agreed. It's worth separating things like agile from Agile™®.
thearn4··on How do you move out of a smarthome?
I added z-wave switches to my house, but honestly they function enough like normal switches that I would just leave them if I sold the house (but take the controller with me). I never used any cloud services though.
thearn4··on Matrix Calculus
Awesome, pretty handy to have for engineering/scientific computing code. Over time, you do start to build the intuition just like you do for scalar derivative calculations, but it takes time.
thearn4··on Scipy 1.0 released
Agreed, many congrats due to the Scipy team! Their library was one of several that helped me get away from MATLAB post graduate school.
thearn4··on If you care about diversity, don't just hire from the same five schools
Side note: It's interesting that you're getting a masters after your phd. Is it in a pretty different field?
thearn4··on If you care about diversity, don't just hire from the same five schools
I've worked on a few teams at my job that only seemed to hire from GA Tech, MIT or Purdue (engineering), though I was the odd one out in coming from a non-engineering background (math) from a state school. Intellectual inbreeding is a big problem in some areas. New ideas tend to emerge when folks with separate (or even seemingly disparate) perspectives find ways to address a common problem. This can describe multidisciplinary teams, but also teams with folks who learned the same subject in different ways.

That said, I do agree that I've always been impressed with prospective hires & the students we've mentored from top-tier schools. But I also know that a great student could come from anywhere, and if they also happen to be local it can be a real value multiplier.

thearn4··on Untangling Spider Biology
As an arachnophobia Something about looking at spiders really disturbs me at some fundamental level. but I'm extremely fascinated by their biology still. Is anyone else similar?
thearn4··on Sugar alters hormones and metabolism, sets stage for obesity and diabetes
I've been trying to cut sugar out of my diet recently. Eventually I'd like to at least feel comfortable treating it like alcohol: only for consumption in social settings and not too often.
thearn4··on Home Assistant is an open-source home automation platform running on Python 3
Looks interesting, can this function as a ZWave controller hub when used on system with a ZWave USB stick?
thearn4··on The story of the 1968 “Fuck the Draft” poster
I really want to watch it, but man 18 hours is a deep dive, especially for such a serious topic. I need to set aside some time.
thearn4··on Socially Engineering Myself into High Security Facilities
The reaction gifs were a bit too distracting for me to finish the article.
thearn4··on Bitcoin has crossed $6,000 USD for the first time
I wonder, is BTC liquid enough that you could actually get your $600k if you suddenly were able to recover them? I haven't dabbled in crypto coins, so I have no idea how the exchanges really operate in practice.
thearn4··on Cash-Burn Threatens Blue Apron 3.5 Months After IPO
Any opinions or predictions for the alternative meal prep box services, like Hello Fresh etc. ?
thearn4··on 75% decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass in protected areas
Same in rural Ohio, tons of both this year
thearn4··on The Mathematical Genius of Auto-Tune
FFT is a pretty cool thing. But yeah, this "trick" has been used for correlation-based computations for quite awhile.

Assuming that it's the trick that the author was referring to, the article is actually a bit sparse on details.

thearn4··on Hyperloop One Becomes ‘Virgin Hyperloop One’
Some colleagues of mine also did a short feasibility assessment of the original white paper, and came to some similar conclusions. The propulsion system also made some assumptions about compressor performance that seemed too optimistic compared to existing turbomachinery.

That said, I have not followed closely enough to know if the hyperloop startups out there are following the original conception or if it has significantly evolved or not. I hear that they've ditched the compressor altogether, but that's got to have a pretty big impact on expected speeds.

thearn4··on Zuckerberg apologizes for VR cartoon tour of Puerto Rico devastation
It reads like a script right out of Silicon Valley.
thearn4··on Spotify’s Discover Weekly: How machine learning finds new music
Same experience on my end. I mean, the recommendation system is better than nothing, but I very rarely find something I really like based on it.
thearn4··on What Happens When a Suburb Begins to Die?
Annexation was a strategy used by Columbus OH some years ago to continue growth past the limits of its suburban sprawl (and officially past the size of Cleveland, making it defacto the largest city in Ohio). Cleveland has been talking about doing the same for some time now, but I don't think the state government has been very supportive. Cleveland proper isn't large in itself, but the metro area is about the size of Austin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Metropolitan_Statistic...

A negotiation for merger between Cleveland and East Cleveland was shot down last year because of some pretty ridiculous demands by the EC leadership:

thearn4··on 150 days of living and coding in a van
I have a thunderbolt display and the my macbooks screen when at work. Text editing, bash, and web browser are on the monitor, with e-mail and slack on the laptop screen.
thearn4··on EPA photos show what US looked like before pollution regulation
I grew up right where the photo for Cleveland was taken. It was still dirty in the early 80s, but so much better than even 10 years before that. I can't imagine rolling back to the 60s. Then again, the steel industry is probably never coming back to Cleveland.
thearn4··on Navy Returns to Compasses and Pencils to Help Avoid Collisions at Sea
I understand the issue with continuity of care, but to be honest that sounds like a communication problem at its core rather something that absolutely can only be addressed with aggressive scheduling.
thearn4··on Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars
As a PhD who never went into academia, I can easily take the pledge not to have any (academic) children.
thearn4··on Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars
How does the academic bubble in the U.S. break? Knowing quite a few career adjuncts, I have to wonder if their situation will only be getting worse.
thearn4··on Cassini's Saturn Mission Goes Out in a Blaze of Glory
I've never worked in a mission operation context, but I assume in this case it's mostly an assembling of the team as a sort of last celebration for the end of the (very successful) mission, than any major technical requirement.
thearn4··on Malicious software libraries found in PyPI posing as well known libraries
It looks like the code phones home to a server in China:
