the_unknown··on A Gossip App Brought My High School to a Halt
As well, I'd like to add a third victim by this lack of morality (well, I'd prefer the term civility but I'm good with either in a pinch!). Society as a whole.

Although we'd like all kids to be rational, understanding, and mature they simply aren't. I don't think many adults are either. We're ruled by our emotions and if people insult us (or our hair, clothes, etc..) we feel awful on some level even if we know not to care about the insult. Kids even more so.

If we could all be reasonable, rational, respectful we'd be good. But the jerks of the world have ruined it for us and walking away and burying our heads in the sand isn't always possible or the right thing to do.

the_unknown··on Show HN: My first WP8 game – Made with Unity
First: Thanks for launching on WP8 - I see you've already launched it on other platforms so hopefully adding WP8 to the mix was relatively easy.

- your app is currently using the default Unity logo in the app listing once a user downloads it so you may wish to add your own logo there instead. - the game itself feels sluggish even when used on a high-end Lumia 920 - I'd check out any optimizations that could be made as other Unity games run far smoother - the gameplay is entertaining but you may want to add some pickups such as missile-armour or 5sec invincibility, etc as the rockets are very difficult to avoid

the_unknown··on Ask HN: Our Kickstarter project is failing
You may also want to reconsider your pricing structure. At approx $5 to get the full game I do wonder why I should bother doing the Kickstarter. You didn't mention the non-Kickstarter price so I'm going to assume it will be approx the same. So I could probably just wait until the game succeeds and pick it up for about the same cost - then I don't need to worry about the game's progress or whether it fails in development.
the_unknown··on Update on Metro
Unfortunate. I use Windows 8.1 every day as my main OS on both a traditional desktop and on a Surface RT. I had no idea that Firefox had a Metro version available. And I happen to use Firefox as my main browser on my desktop.

I would have loved for a notice to appear when starting it up one day to say "Hey, we see you use Windows 8 - did you know there's a Metro option available? Find out More or Never bother me again."

the_unknown··on Hemingway makes your writing bold and clear
This is quite the fun tool. I know web apps are all the rage but really would love to see this implemented as an MS Word plugin - I'd be far more likely to use it on an ongoing basis if it were integrated directly into my editor of choice.
the_unknown··on Microsoft appoints Scott Guthrie new Cloud and Enterprise chief
This is likely the first of many personnel moves at Microsoft. ScottGu is favourably looked upon by the dev community so this move is likely to be well liked by the .NET, Azure, ASP.NET, and Windows Phone coders out there.

Congrats and hope this means even greater things to look forward to with the changes happening at Microsoft.

the_unknown··on Why am I being endorsed for skills and expertise I do not claim on my profile?
LinkedIn suggested that one of my friends should be endorsed for 'pregnancy'. Well, I couldn't resist that suggestion so I went for it.

I called him up the next day and we both laughed about it. He then added it to his profile. Since then he's been seconded on that skill by somebody else, too.

the_unknown··on The limits of Google’s openness
I'd be more inclined to give Google a bit of leeway here if they hadn't already pulled out some petty behaviour against Windows Phone.

This is somewhat similar to Google's blocking of Maps from the Windows Phone web browser. A feature that worked fine originally and once there was uproar from users came back and continued to work fine.

Google is attempting to deny service to Windows Phone users to avoid competition in the handheld market. It isn't pretty and it does make me rethink my daily usage of Google services. Windows Phone users are Google customers too and I couldn't care less about their petty rivalry with some other mega-corp.

the_unknown··on Twenty dollars in an envelope
In my final year of University I decided to write some basic shareware that was helpful in creating your own custom theme for the recently-new Windows 95. After completing the app I put it out there to the shareware community.

I attached a note to the program asking for $20 if you liked it. I was very clear with the program though that there were no additional benefits to registering other than a clean karma. The program was fully functional from day 1 and payment though highly appreciated was not necessary. Being the poor student that I was I also offered a great incentive to people - instead of sending me $20 they could photocopy $20 and just send me the scan. Yes, being a 20something about to graduate encouraged me to ask for money but I was still too scared to jump in fully.

The crazy thing was that I started getting cheques from all over the world - and received some really cool scans of foreign currency that I hung on the walls as art. I even had the strange experience of receiving a note from somebody who lived in the apartment across from me who found the program and wanted to thank me (he was a student too so no money but having somebody at my University send me a thank you was even better than a cheque would have been).

I'm glad I wrote the software and put it out there. Even though I didn't make enough to retire I had finally realized that working for yourself can be intensely rewarding in many ways.

(I also learned a valuable lesson that even big companies can have problems writing cheques sometimes - I had one very well known software company send me some free games rather than a cheque.)

the_unknown··on Developer interest in Windows 8 is stagnant, new line of worry for Microsoft
Wholly to be expected at this point. Until Windows 8 hits the shelves and people start using it there is little incentive to build specifically for it - and since Win7 apps run perfectly well in Win8 there is little reason to focus on Windows 8 by itself at this point.

Once the WinRT tablets get into peoples hands the call for RT-specific apps will increase.

Plus, the WinRT dev environment really isn't as fully baked as we've grown accustomed to in the Windows world. So many things just simply don't exist at this point. I've been looking at building a Javascript-based WinRT project - one of the suggested app build paths suggested by MS and discovered that there is no touch-and-drag support built in yet. You can roll your own using JS-events but .... really, things like that dampen the enthusiasm.

the_unknown··on SlabText.js
works in IE10 - so good for the future.
the_unknown··on Microsoft sticks to its guns, keeps Do Not Track on by default in IE10
If sites respect the DNT flag sent by the browser then this really should be a great step forward for user privacy contributing to a better web from a user's perspective.

As a user I don't care about your politics, alliances, bias, or nefarious (to me) goals. I simply am asked when I start using the browser whether it is okay for sites to track me and I choose the "heck no, of course not" option or the "yeah, whatever, go nuts" option. If I accept all defaults including using Bing as my search engine and DNT as being on who are you (evil web developer at mega-corp) to say my choice is invalid?

the_unknown··on App.net 3rd-party revshare proposal
As an end-user of these services will I be able to identify which developers should receive my payment?

For instance if I run two apps that use their service - a game that I play every few days and a social aggregator that runs in the background all day long but that I generally I would like to define that the game is more "important" to me in terms of dollars than the app is. Perhaps the game is worth 90% of my payment and the app 5% and some random service that I tried and abandoned should get the other 5%

the_unknown··on The Royal Canadian Mint just announced a new alternative to BitCoin
http://www.techvibes.com/blog/royal-canadian-mint-developing...

"...will be formally unveiled on April 17 by Chief Financial Officer Marc Brulé in a keynote at The Canadian Institute's Forum on Canadian Payment Innovations.

The digital payments space has been booming recently. Canadian-born companies like PayFirma and NetSecure are already active in the mobile payments industry, not to mention American counterparts such as Square, as well as some failed ideas such as the Bitcoin."

Doesn't necessarily mean it is real but it does seem to be.

the_unknown··on Buy American Cars (or Not)
In a similar manner - if you aren't driving a "north american" car you're not even allowed to park in any of the close lots at the local GM plant. you basically park further away then everybody else as your punishment. When mixed with the large price discount for buying from GM it is basically a fool's game to buy anything other than a GM here. If you're an employee/partner/supplier/ or know an employee/partner/supplier.

For the rest of us who don't get discounts.... the world is our overpriced oyster.

the_unknown··on The Copyright Lobby Absolutely Loves Child Pornography
Luckily there are more than just 2 parties to vote for... true, the PC and Liberals were the top dogs but the oft-overlooked NDP certainly bumped things up last time and the Green - well, they were given a seat off in the backwaters of BC... oh, and a few other regional/sort-of-national parties as well - there are alternatives if you're willing to test them out.
the_unknown··on Adobe abandoning Flash Player for TVs as well
Next week I was going to begin building my first TV app for Samsung's Smart TV - using Flash. Given the timelines I'll probably still go this route but do wonder what this announcement means for Samsung and LG's TV plans.
the_unknown··on App.net
Having recently built a mini site to host info about an iPhone app I can appreciate where the idea is going... unfortunately their pricing seems fairly out of place with what's being offered.

I built a small supporting site and tossed it up on Google Apps (really just plain HTML) for free hosting... yes, I needed to set the template and Google Analytics code myself but is that really worth the $2.50 - $4.00 a month?

Might I humbly suggest a small change... bump the free level to 5 apps so that I get hooked on the ease of use and simplicity of your model then group together upgrades in wide bands... maybe 5-10 for the second tier and 10-50 for the third tier.

Oh, and get Windows Phone support in there... there likely isn't much demand but it is my preferred platform and I'd like it to succeed. :)

the_unknown··on Microsoft confirms Kinect hackers to get official developer kit
As an app developer this is great news... can't wait to see some of the innovative uses that come out of this. The demo video released earlier this week of kinect/windows phone 7 integration was a great first step.
the_unknown··on Ask HN: How do I bootstrap selling an E-book
As mikecane pointed out - get your book on Amazon. I've found that 80% of my book sales come via Amazon - if possible put out an ebook version and a publish-on-demand through them as well as people still do go for the physical book often enough to make it worth the small investment in time to get both set up.

You do have to deal with Amazon taking their cut of the sales but they have the market size to more than make up for this.

the_unknown··on Canada obsoletes CAN-SPAM and replaces with an Opt-In system
In similar news today: Telemarketer hit with $500,000 CRTC fine. Good to see that they are pursuing these major cases and forcing fixes. Still, I didn't sign up for the Do Not Call specifically because I believed it would increase my junk mail calls - never can trust the bad guys.

the_unknown··on How LG Described its Windows 7 Phone to Anandtech
I picked up the LG Optimus 7 phone last week and really am impressed with it. The screen is just the right size - I almost feel it is too big but it sits comfortably in the hand. A 4" screen would be too much.

The LG apps they added actually do feel useful - I haven't tried the voice-to-SMS thing yet but the "play-to" app is great fun. The scansearch feels like it could be useful when travelling but so far I haven't had any need for it.

Oh, and the voice quality is better than any phone I've had before including the BlackBerry Bold and Storm. (oh, and it is superior in everyway to my old LG Chocolate - though that isn't saying much.)

the_unknown··on Ask HN: Not many apps released as the part of November startup sprint.
unfortunately I've fallen victim to an over ambitious project and a lack of time to accomplish my goal. That said... I'm really pleased with how far I've come and what I did manage to get done. I know I'll miss the end of November deadline but I'm going to turn that loss into a positive and spend some additional time on gameplay and mechanics.

I'm still really glad I participated and hope this comes around again next year. Though I'll do a better job of making public updates at that time to keep everybody in the loop and do some nice pre-marketing.

the_unknown··on Smurfs Sneak into Apple's App Store, Rob Parents
I'd love it if we could get a better breakdown of app-types: 1) paid download 2) free-to-download and play 3) free-to-download with in-app purchase

This would not only be more reflective of the state of the game but also allow me to make better informed decisions when downloading apps for my child (or myself).

the_unknown··on Ask HN: Show me your Half Baked project
Too bad I didn't see this sooner - it would have made a nice simple way to keep track of the various municipal elections happening across the country at the moment.

If this could be customized for the user's location (or per account) so that the local Toronto/Calgary/Durham/Ottawa/etc election was covered this could gain huge traction.

This is great - maybe you can push it further for the next federal election?

the_unknown··on Are you on track for: Lets make November "Launch an App Month", who's with me?
Okay, the WordPress site is now launched. Not a lot there - mostly just a brief project overview.

the_unknown··on Are you on track for: Lets make November "Launch an App Month", who's with me?
I haven't plotted out the amount of work to do yet but I've got my basic project outlined and down "on paper". I'll be drawing up my targets and GANTT chart this weekend. I'm probably biting off more than I can chew but I'll adjust where necessary. I hope to launch a public site for it next week with daily updates - probably a WordPress thing.
the_unknown··on How to Break the Trust of Your customers in Just One Day - Lessons Learned
You should also consider the timing of the announcement. This pricing change was made on a Monday morning - people are already grumpy from returning to their regular work week but it also was a "special" Monday as it was a holiday for some. Thanksgiving for all Canadians and Columbus Day I believe for some (all?) Americans. You potentially affected numerous holiday brunches with the timing of your pricing changes.

NOTE: I haven't used your company before but it seems like it would be useful so I'll certainly consider it if I'm in need of this type of service in the future.

the_unknown··on Lets make November "Launch an App Month", who's with me?
AFter a year or so of lurking I've decided to finally create an account on HackerNews just to say... "Count me in"
