the_svd_doctor··on HPC is dying, and MPI is killing it (2015)
“HPC engineering” and “Optimizing LLM training” are similar. It’s about profiling, performance modeling, finding bottlenecks, rewriting what’s needed, etc. Lots of overlap, and people from more traditional HPC doing it too. Obviously if you’re a 50yo university professor doing airplane simulations you won’t switch to LLMs today though…
the_svd_doctor··on Suing to protect right of incarcerated people to receive physical mail
Lots of people in prison/jail are not convicted though, but merely awaiting trial. The 13th amendment only applies to "duly convicted" people.
the_svd_doctor··on Americans lost a record $10.3B to online scammers last year, FBI says
Sorry about that. Regardless of the amount, the feeling of being scammed must suck.

Yes. https://status.slack.com/
the_svd_doctor··on DoorDash lays off 1250 employees
In (basic) queue theory, at equilibrium (average input rate = average output rate), the length of the queue is proportional to the variance in the input rate. Make that what you want :D
the_svd_doctor··on Lastpass Security Incident
Is there a web UI ? If yes - I guess an attacker can just send "bad" JS to the client and steal the master password no? Or inject a malicious update. Most people probably have auto updates?

the_svd_doctor··on Bloated college administration is making education unaffordable
TAs are paid like 3000$/m for 20h/w. So more like 30$/h.
the_svd_doctor··on Bring Your Own Password Manager: Portable BitWarden on a Pi Zero
I think the idea is that if you use the official client, there is “no risk” because everything is encrypted client side anyway.

In theory.

the_svd_doctor··on Python 3.11 is faster than 3.8
C++ (especially template heavy with lots of headers and so on) is certainly not fast to compile. But 2 hours that's crazy. What sort of codebase and on what kind of machine?

A 128 cores threadripper is a great workstation to compile C++ code fast :D

the_svd_doctor··on The Wonderfully Terrible World of C and C++ Text Encoding APIs (With Some Rust)

the_svd_doctor··on CS 168: The Modern Algorithmic Toolbox
True. Norms are never linear since they cannot be negative.
the_svd_doctor··on H1B rejected – builds unicorn back home
That’s not true. You might be confusing the H1B lottery and the Green card cap per country. The two are barely related.
the_svd_doctor··on H1B rejected – builds unicorn back home
It's much much harder today than it ever was in the past, see https://redbus2us.com/h1b-visa-cap-reach-dates-history-graph...

FY 2008/2009 were indeed a bit of outliers at the time, but since 2014/2015 it's getting worst and worst. FY 2023 had 483,000 applications for ~85k total slots.

the_svd_doctor··on Launch HN: Pana (YC S22) – Social Trust Banking with a US Latino Focus
It’s totally possible to open accounts without SSNs.. plenty do it. They still need to do their KYC though.
the_svd_doctor··on Getting started with decentralized identity
Blockchain means there is also a consensus mechanism. That’s the whole point: resolving conflicts.

Git is basically a Merkel Tree, but not a blockchain.

the_svd_doctor··on How to Get a Job as a Software Developer in the UK After Brexit (Guide)
Yes. But it still has strict non-immigrant intent. So you can't travel on O or renew your O-associated work authorization while your I-485 is pending. H-1B doesn't have those restrictions because it's dual-intent.
the_svd_doctor··on How to Get a Job as a Software Developer in the UK After Brexit (Guide)
"Much easier" is kind of an overstatement. The odds in the H1B lottery still suck. The FY2023 season saw a record number of applicants https://redbus2us.com/uscis-received-484k-h1b-registrations-...

Also O visas are strictly non-immigrant intent, which is a big restriction.

the_svd_doctor··on LUMI, Europe’s most powerful supercomputer
Hard/impossible to respond. Every workload is different. It can be mostly compute bound (Linpack), communication bound, a mix, very latency sensitive, etc. Imho, it just depends on the workflow and we should probably use multiple metrics instead of just Linpack peak TFLOPS.
the_svd_doctor··on CJEU confirms that UK citizens have lost EU citizenship
If you’re Slovak this clearly does not affect you. Slovakia is still in the EU.

You don’t wait a year before you start working there if you are selected :)

the_svd_doctor··on PhD students face cash crisis with wages that don’t cover living costs
> PhD students by law cannot work more than 20 hours a week.

While most teaching (and research) assistanships might indeed be technically 20h/week, I can assure you most/all PhD students work >20h/week total.

You still need to do your research on the side. If you RA and your PhD research align, nice. If it doesn't, tough luck.

the_svd_doctor··on PhD students face cash crisis with wages that don’t cover living costs
A PhD is a full-time job, time-wise. I'm not sure how _really_ feasible a part-time PhD + part-time job really is. Maybe for some, but most likely not for most imho. Agreed that it would help financially though.
