the_svd_doctor··on The drive stats of Backblaze storage pods
Same, but with rclone. My bill is <1$/m. Love it.
the_svd_doctor··on Yabai – A tiling window manager for macOS
Fantastic app. Thanks for sharing. Already love it after 2 minutes.
the_svd_doctor··on Setenv Is Not Thread Safe and C Doesn't Want to Fix It
Some libraries behaviour/API can be tweaked with env var. env var are read at runtime not loading time.
the_svd_doctor··on Amazon is blocking promotions of employees who don't comply with RTO policy
Yes but the idea is that competition should help the economy in surfacing "good ideas". If competition leads to acquisition all the time, then really there isn't much benefit to the overall economy.
the_svd_doctor··on Monty Python and the Holy Grail in Cinemas
I'm 31 and love it
the_svd_doctor··on Zelle finally caves after years of refusing to refund scam victims
Probably something like

(1) Scammer sends check / something like that, showing a larger than expected deposit

(2) Check is cached by victim

(3) Victim is asked to reimburse the difference using Zelle or other "irreversible" method (best being Bitcoin, I guess, but Zelle also works apprently..)

(4) Check bounces

(5) Victim looses the money send by Zelle

the_svd_doctor··on Zelle finally caves after years of refusing to refund scam victims
Is that any different than for, say, checks?
the_svd_doctor··on Core to core latency data on large systems
In HPC it's common to do a mix of MPI (message-passing / distributed memory) and OpenMP (shared memory) parallelism when running on big multicore (and obviously multi-node) machines. It helps with locality, among other things.
the_svd_doctor··on Auto industry executives admit electric vehicle plans are in jeopardy
Climate control is an important one imho
the_svd_doctor··on Implementing a GPU's programming model on a CPU
Yes, but not all thread in the block need to. As long as you fill a cache line you’re good.
the_svd_doctor··on EU Grabs ARM for First ExaFLOP Supercomputer
AI training requires a lot of global reductions which must be very fast otherwise everything slows down. So they also require fast and low latency interconnects.
the_svd_doctor··on MatX: Efficient C++17 GPU numerical computing library with Python-like syntax
The solution is to install the latest CUDA driver (which is always 100% backward compatible) but have multiple version of the libraries in /usr/local. Granted it can get messy with various package manager doing their own things.
the_svd_doctor··on Google, Meta, Amazon hiring low-paid H1B workers after US layoffs
Is that really related to h1b or other (cultural?) differences?
the_svd_doctor··on A case for dynamic scoring of high-skilled immigration
Sure if that’s what you meant, then yeah. Imho that’s a weird way to put it.

You can renew indefinitely with an approved I140, btw (typical for backlogged Indians) (not that this doesn’t suck).

the_svd_doctor··on A case for dynamic scoring of high-skilled immigration
> The H1B terminates in a green card, after six years, quota willing. In fact, you don’t get an option in the matter.

What? Most do, because usually people want to stay. But H1B does not “terminate in a green card” and you 100% have an option in the matter (you have to sign the I485…).

the_svd_doctor··on Designing a new concurrent data structure
>> I thought I came up with something novel - it turns out it was just my ignorance:)

The first 3 years of my PhD summarized in one sentence.

the_svd_doctor··on Nvidia announces financial results for second quarter fiscal 2024
He probably didn’t get any as an intern.
the_svd_doctor··on MLIR For Beginners: A series of articles on the MLIR framework
Same opinion. I have little/no exposure to compilers (yes I know, maybe I'm not the right target) and tried to follow Toy and had to resort to a lot of wikipedia/google just to understand the concepts and terms. And after finishing it I was still a bit confused about how to even get started. I think it could be made a bit more beginner friendly.

I found the standalone example https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/tree/main/mlir/examples... in the MLIR repo to be very useful, on the other hand.

the_svd_doctor··on VkFFT: Vulkan/CUDA/Hip/OpenCL/Level Zero/Metal Fast Fourier Transform Library
FFT is memory bound (it’s N log N flops for N bytes, so little arithmetic). GPU HBM is much faster than DRAM, so generally it’s much faster on GPU.
the_svd_doctor··on Government URLs that don't end in .gov
“annualcreditreport.com” is in the list but it’s not a government website. It’s run by a lovely alliance from equifax/transunion/experian, asking you to check the info they hold on you to avoid other people stealing money from banks.
the_svd_doctor··on Canada Woos American H-1B Visa Holders Fed Up with U.S. Immigration System
TN is useful, but not _that_ useful if you eventually want to get a Green card.

And GC quotas are based on place of birth.

the_svd_doctor··on Show HN: Van, truck or car camp for $0 a night
This took me a while. I think the #1 is what most people would understand.
the_svd_doctor··on Ask HN: Any hardware startups here?
Looks nice and easy to clean. I don't know why the regular "Target car seats" have so many creases and folded layers, it's a major PITA to clean :)
the_svd_doctor··on Makie, a modern and fast plotting library for Julia
I mean, yes but also no. JAX will JIT on accelerators OOTB and has outstanding (imho) support for multi node. Julia does not have that OOTB AFAIK.

Now I agree that Julia, with its JIT, is well positioned to do all this. But I don’t think it does.

the_svd_doctor··on Show HN: Using C++23 <stacktrace> to get proper crash logs in C++ programs
Can you expand on the problems with regex?
the_svd_doctor··on Fastmail Is Down
Works in the Bay Area for me. Agree that communication isn't great.
the_svd_doctor··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
If you’re already in the US and eventually want a GC (typical Us graduate), both of those are not very good option and H1-B is better bc of its dual intent.
the_svd_doctor··on Nvidia DGX GH200: 100 Terabyte GPU Memory System
The network topology of TPUv4 is far far inferior though. It's a torus. No switches.
the_svd_doctor··on 90% of laid-off H1-B visa holders were able to find new work
> Isn't the requirement for a H1-B visa that your skills can not be "easily" replaced with a local person

No, that's for green card. That's part of the "PERM" step in EB2. Not for H1B.

the_svd_doctor··on A small number of companies are colluding to cheat H1B visa lottery, US says
Being dual-intent just means when you arrive (ie, when you cross the border, the first time or anytime after), you can't have immigrant intent at that time.

Once you're in, if you eventually (genuinely) change your mind, that's fine, you can adjust to LPR.
