the_real_r2d2··on AT&T cellular IP reveals iPhone users' location?
I wonder if the app is asking for permission to do it. If not, in my neighbourhood we call it "spyware". Seriously, it is a clever idea but I hope they are doing the right thing and asking the user for approval.
the_real_r2d2··on Google's Eric Schmidt on What the Web Will Look Like in 5 Years
Good point, I do not either what he meant. I think importance would be difficult to measure, but volume growth would be easy for Google to do. I imagine that Schmidt is not talking blindly, he has access to the growth rates of content and the forecast may be accurate.
the_real_r2d2··on Spotify CTO Is Leaving, Door Won’t Hit Him On The Way Out
Well, may be a lot of people that currently uses if because it is free would stop using it.
the_real_r2d2··on A 300-person human tweet to protest an Internet tax in Mexico [PIC]
Well, it is and overflow tweet. =)

the_real_r2d2··on Facebook: Simplifying the Stream
I like the ranked feed and I like to have an option to see it unranked (as live feed). I wonder if FB has an option to set the default to either rank/unranked. In the past many of my friends have these annoying applications that fortunately are not showed in the ranked news (may be because the algorithm learnt that I did not like them as I use to hide them).
the_real_r2d2··on [dead]
I always thought (until some years ago) that Red Hat would do what Ubuntu (or Canonical) has done to bring a friendly Linux Desktop to "normal" users.
the_real_r2d2··on Why Good Programmers Are Lazy and Dumb
I agree with lazy but dumb I do not think so. In fact I think that good programmers are lazy and smart.
the_real_r2d2··on Does the New iMac Foretell the Next Apple TV?
HDTV and PC vendors will converge to a similar product. In Europe the iniciative is called Hybrid Broadcast Broadband (http://www.hbbtv.org/). One of the pushers I think is the BBC.
the_real_r2d2··on Internet Archive Opens 1.6 Million E-Books to OLPC Laptops
Thanks, good to know.
the_real_r2d2··on Internet Archive Opens 1.6 Million E-Books to OLPC Laptops
I imagine that they are only for OLPC because of some copyright agreement. Anyway it would be nice that they were available to the rest of the Internet (or may be they are and I did not read well the news).
the_real_r2d2··on Modern man a wimp
That's why we are "sapiens", our physical strength is not as good as ancients homos but we are smarter. Smarter proved to be better than faster or stronger. We may be wimp, but we survived.
the_real_r2d2··on [dead]
I have seen three at least.
the_real_r2d2··on Google Chrome released for Mac (Official Developer Build)
I will keep using Chromium (and manual updates if necessary) until Google releases an official beta. I do not why but I trust more in the developers in Chromiun that in Google itself.
the_real_r2d2··on Tim Berners-Lee joins Twitter, complains of "confusing" UI
Yes, you right. Never thought about it
the_real_r2d2··on Tim Berners-Lee joins Twitter, complains of "confusing" UI
He could have use "the_real_timberneslee".

Nevertheless I do no see why the fuss. Yes, it is the inventor of the WWW but people is seeing this like "the blessing" of Bernes-Lee to the now-omnipower twitter. I think is not, it is just another user that has been catch for the wave.

the_real_r2d2··on Google Reader Adds Magic to Your Feeds
I tried the "magic" and at least I feel that it is more fun to read. News are not sorted by date any more, which it gives me some "feeling" of randomness reading that I like. The new sorted news "seems" to be ranked according to my previous history of reading. Not sure if it is better but so far I like it a lot.
the_real_r2d2··on The New CNN.com (First Screenshots)
Well, it is better late than never.

I do not know if they are going to do it, but it would be nice that you can customize it with your preferences about type of news (sports, politics, etc.), location, etc. For what I have read it includes many "social media" sources but it lacks in personalization.

Some months ago the BBC also changed its web site to make it more "Web 2.0". You can personalize it at some level. For example local weather forecast, type of news, type of tv shows in the iPlayer, financial data, etc.

the_real_r2d2··on Skiing Robot Not Very Useful But Totally Fun To Watch
Not as fun as the "Robot Cop" in Wallace and Groomit "A Grand Day Out". I tried to find a bit of the movie but no luck.
the_real_r2d2··on Google Announces Social Search
May be you want to search for a tweet, a link, a video or a photo that one of your friends posted. Today the search in FB and Twitter are very bad, so using Google may help. Also, they may try to merge organic search results with data from your friend in order to give better results. This under the hypothesis that you may be interested more in something share by your friends than in the organic results. Nevertheless, I agree with the other reply; probably is to profile you better and give more targeted ads.
the_real_r2d2··on Google Chrome for Mac – A Review
Is Chromium for Mac = Chrome Mac?

I ask because when I read the title I imagine that suddenly Google had released the Chrome for Mac, then after reading I realised that is a review of Chromium for Mac.

Now, I have been using Chromium for mac for a while with almost no complain. I alternate its use with Safari but I could say that at least for me, it is a very mature product.

the_real_r2d2··on Ask HN: Fun project:builing robot with camera and wifi
You can use Arduino. These gadgets are quite good and not very expensive, I have seen pretty clever hack projects using them (GPS, Lego Mind Storms, webserver, etc.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arduino

I think you can use an arduino board as the interface between the car and the netbook. Also, they are quite good and you could even make the robot with the arduino itself (they have modules for Bluetooth and Ethernet. I would imagine that they also have a wifi one).

the_real_r2d2··on Google Announces Social Search
It seems a nice experiment to search all around your friends and connections. Would it make the results better if they are incorporated in the main search? I do not know ...
the_real_r2d2··on What should you say to a parent scared of Wi-Fi?
Well, that could backfire. I would imagine that the parents complaining about the WiFi radiations are very probable to be non-smokers.
the_real_r2d2··on [dead]
Cool, they finally add the Google login. Nevertheless the site is still as ugly and unusable as it has been since I registered for the first time. I do not what it is, but Orkut is so unappealing for me.
the_real_r2d2··on Olympic Committee warns man about sharing photos on website
I am with you. This is going over and over, the FIA, the FIFA, the NBA, the NFL, and now the IOC. Sometimes I am just so tired to hear about the abuse/misinterpretation of Copy Right laws that I do not want to talk about it. However I always ended saying how silly these companies are in trying to "protect" their "rights".
the_real_r2d2··on Australia looking to censor iPhone apps
It wouldn't surprise me. Lately the Australian Gov. has done crazy stuff related to Copy Rights Laws, "Net Security" and Net neutrality.
the_real_r2d2··on RT @google: Tweets and updates and search, oh my
Not working for either. As many others I think that both (MS and Google) tried to win the other with lame PR and a broken application. The result is embarrassing for both.
the_real_r2d2··on RT @google: Tweets and updates and search, oh my
Too early to really judge. Let's see how Bing's results from twitter are and then wait for Google. I think that a success will be how they will mine the results. Today from the search results in twitter-search are pretty lame and useless. If Bing or Google can reduce the noisy ratio an get useful results, then we will have a winner.
the_real_r2d2··on [dead]
I did the same but using the site in advance search in google. I will try the other methods. However a small search field would be nice.
