the_optimist··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
Truckin straight to the trash heap where you can sort recycled cans by hand for a living. What an abysmal vision.
the_optimist··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
Yeah because they got billions by extracting it like mosquitos. It came mostly from your billions I assume. Without that it would have been all yours. Clearly you have zero concept of how an economy works.
the_optimist··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
California is full of people who do not understand how investment works and want it gone. This is progress missing from progressive. It is the social missing from socialist. Ists and ivs with nothing, merely a pack of stupid ideas. The residual is reality: no-teeth, drug-induced stupor sleeping in street squalor and their rent-seeking enablers cozying up to the tax authorities.
the_optimist··on We must pace the frontier
Go innovate. Or find things that robots cannot do. It’s turtles all the way down.
the_optimist··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
The EU is not leading anything. They may as well just commit to becoming a subsistence agricultural society with EPCOT heirlooms on display.
the_optimist··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
It is telling that most aggressive forms of “capitalism” plead for government involvement to permanently limit new competition. I own something and I don’t want anyone else to have a chance. The marginal cost of bribing a senator is tiny tiny tiny compared to the value.
the_optimist··on We must pace the frontier
Completely correct. We are moving into a world where any person can have anything they want, only limited by capacity to produce it. People love information and digest great quantities of it. The marginal cost of information production is going to zero. This is only bad for people who spend their time shuffling bits. If you want to not suffer, go do things other than move bits around.
the_optimist··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
All of the things it has done is just what people are already doing. Every single one. It helps, but there are already people doing this stuff. And we already have defenses against the existing attacks. We might have to defend better, but the real problem is “Who is setting the moral compass over generations.” One one hand, that will inherently fall to future generations. On the other, we are laying the groundwork.

Imagine you use it to inflict trauma on your cruelest political enemy. Then next year they do that to you. That is war, and we already do it. But we don’t want people / governments in charge that are going to do this.

God knows we have governments and individuals doing this historically, and this is probably the greatest source of historic instability. It might be the single best argument for open models — a unified frontier where no single exploit is going to represent capture.

This is exactly the opposite of what Dario proposes.

the_optimist··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
It’s a bit of a self-serving argument, don’t you think?

And how does that relate to the ask for oligopoly licensing within global democracy?

“We must build the nuclear bomb first in order to make sure no one else builds one.” This the most nonsense, disingenuous argument imaginable.

the_optimist··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
It is an utterly silly premise that we should appoint insiders with permanent control.

Megalomania is not evidence of either a problem or a solution.

the_optimist··on We must pace the frontier
Sorry boss we live in a physical world, unplug it. Don’t grant information monopolies.
the_optimist··on Dario Just Said Pump the Brakes on AI
Purest form of collusive insider trading right there.
the_optimist··on Dario Just Said Pump the Brakes on AI
Somebody please stop me from destroying civilization by granting me a monopoly before my IPO!
the_optimist··on Government Proposes New Six-Figure Fee for H1B Visas
why?
the_optimist··on Tesla seeks to guard crash data from public disclosure
Quite oddly in the context of all these varied comments, this key claim is demonstrated as false.
the_optimist··on Airport for DuckDB
What’s the situation where this is useful? Seems like ‘replace your remote duckDB instance—used to replace a DB server—with duckDB instance + a flight server (or a bunch of them!)’. Who has a problem for which this is the solution?
the_optimist··on Discover is now part of Capital One
How? The Discover network will be substantially better positioned to influence visa mastercard and amex, which are each expensive and oligopolistic. You know anything about this, or just spitballing here?
the_optimist··on Discover is now part of Capital One
Cool. Great company, more competition among the payment networks should result in better and less expensive products. Maybe Discover will finally achieve its potential.
the_optimist··on Manufactured consensus on x.com
Reddit mgmt itself has significant concerns, according to anonymous sources. You heard it here first.
the_optimist··on DOGE worker’s code supports NLRB whistleblower
The article does not define or discuss the authority of DOGE.
the_optimist··on DOGE worker’s code supports NLRB whistleblower
I appreciate the question. The most obvious is that this is an “audit the auditors” exercise, and they do not want to leak information toward a likely adversarial counterpart. If they have the authority to so, then they do. An adjacent complaint about “not following Treasury policy is similar.” If these systems exist, there is a governing authority structure, and that does not begin at the level contemplated in this document.
the_optimist··on DOGE worker’s code supports NLRB whistleblower
For those genuine actors here: this theoretical outrage assumes the premise of something immoral or illegal, and completely ignores the authority structure. This looks and smells like an info operation.
the_optimist··on DOGE worker’s code supports NLRB whistleblower
Explain please.
the_optimist··on Make no mistake, employees will always be just a line item
Agree with the overall perspective, but the union thing is marginal at best. Do you think swearing alliance and allegiance to a different org, delegating authority to it, and funding it is a guaranteed success? The game theory of this is tipped to iterate to failure.

Just plug in to something you like, do your best, and recognize it for what it is. You should have neither an adversarial nor misrepresented relationship. If you have it, you by definition support it.

the_optimist··on Waltz's team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
Okay. Let’s say you have a compelling and coherent argument. Where can I go to read more about each of the things you write of, and share community with like-minded people?
the_optimist··on Waltz's team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
Genuinely, thanks for your response.
the_optimist··on Waltz's team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
Do you anticipate that someone is going to tell you, specifically, that they do not support rabid DEI, some of the highest tax rates in the world, widespread and severe drugs, poverty, and homelessness, endless war, vote dilution through importation of new voters, calling a random sample of political nemeses rapists and racists, and now, painting Swastikas on vehicles? Do you truly both believe that is disconnected from reality, and that someone would reveal this in a conversation with you?
the_optimist··on Waltz's team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
This is not a grounded critique. It is unbalanced and lacking in insight.
the_optimist··on Waltz's team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
I think it’s safe to say that there is severe overfitting and pattern matching behavior involved. When I come across someone who says something so broadly judgmental and unfounded, I become immediately intrigued as to how this person is either exploiting or exploited, one of which is assured. I hope you are doing okay.
the_optimist··on Waltz's team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
You speak oddly of people like they are monolithic and lacking perceptive nuance (more like animals than any people I know). In the US, of all places, there is tremendous heterogeneity. What are the key elements that you know of “they”?
